Why is Sonar Platinum not allowing me to export mp3 format?

When I tried to export a mix to mp3 I got the following error message...

"The MP3 encoder must be unlocked before use. Please visit http://cakewalk.com to upgrade a previous encoder, or to purchase a new encoder."

So I go to the Cakewalk store an find an activation for $9.99 or a download for $9.99.  So I'm thinking do I need the download and the activation? Then I see this...

"Purchase of this product is not required to convert your files to MP3. This software integrated encoder is intended to improve file export workflow."

So I don't need either right? Or, wrong?

It is hard to believe that Sonar Platinum does not come with an MP3 encoder!

This just seems like I'm being shafted into maybe buying an encoder I don't need. I know I can use another program to encode various formats. But what the "H"? Can't Cakewalk afford to provide me with a $9.99 piece of software? Sometimes things like this p*** me off about a product.

You have to purchase the MP3 Encoder separately in the Cake store...

https://shop.cakewalk.com/1244/catalog/product.152236/language.en/currency.USD/?id=qLB31IoLUM

or, alternately, you can use an different encoder...someone here can chime in on that..

The Lame encoder is FREE and can be integrated into Sonar...

http://lame.sourceforge.net/download.php

there is an article somewhere on how to do it...

Yes for an additional $9.99. If you are going to purchase the license make sure to get the correct product https://shop.cakewalk.com/1244/catalog/catalog.1307/category.60182/product.152233/. It is not required but it is the only way to activate the integrated mp3 encoder. The integrated encoder is based on LAME BTW. There are alternatives, add an external encoder to SONAR or export a wav then encode the mp3.

Lars is as always correct. There have been countless similar threads in the past on this but basically a company has to be licensed to use the encoder hence why it is a chargeable extra. However you can use the free lame encoder which will give you additional options in the export menu in Sonar for different mp3 export qualities. It will also work in audacity etc.

Sonar Platinum - Windows 10 Pro 64bit - AMD FX 8150 processor - 16Gb RAM - 27" Monitor (it's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it)

Lars is as always correct.

He just has trouble creating links to the CW store.

One of the sad things is that, today, most DAW's in this price range
have the MP3 included...one day Cake will figure that out...on the
opposite side...you get far more for your money with Sonar IMO...
so $9.99 is not "robbery"...but it would be nice if they included it
ONLY in Platinum, which is their "premium" package...I think that
would be a little more "in line" with current trends...

This may change in 2018. The last mp3 patent expires at the end of this year.

I don't think its a patent issue - its a copyright issue with the code/software.  The fact that the patents are expiring might mean that more converter options are available as people don't have to work around patents anymore, but whatever software they write will still be copyrighted and those distribution rights reserved (as they are with the Lame converter today.)

Lame is freely distributable for non commercial use.

Once a company eg Cakewalk includes it in a product it is no longer covered under the free use licence making licence fees payable to the licence/patent holder (Thompson) on a per unit basis.

Yes Cakewalk could absorb the cost but at $10 per unit sold would be a hefty amount. So install it yourself for free or pay Cakewalk. If you check Cakewalk is a signatory to the agreements with Thomson.

The thing you don't usually hear in these discussions is why you should choose your mp3 encoder carefully.  So many of us jump through all kinds of hoops to use just the right microphone or plugins for our productions, yet at the tail end of the process, grab whatever mp3 encoder is free or convenient.

But not all MP3 encoders are alike.  Here's an article that explains the hows and whys:

Personally, I've used dBpoweramp for years.  It isn't free ($39) but is arguably the best when it comes to being full featured in all things mp3 related (including ripping CDs).

It happened a little sooner than I expected. From the 2017.04 release announcement
Alex Westner [Cakewalk]

MP3 Availability

Artist, Professional, Platinum
MP3 export is now available in SONAR Artist, Professional, and Platinum at no charge. Recently the patent royalties associated with MP3 encoding expired. Cakewalk is excited to offer MP3 encoding free of charge in SONAR.

I looked at dbpoweramp for years but I can't bring myself to buy it because the owner is a complete arse.

I believe that there is only one "real" MP3 encoder that was used by licensing the patent.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3

The alternative has been to use the LAME encoder...

I see no change from 2017.03 to 2017.04 WRT the integrated mp3 encoder. The mp3 dialog still shows SONAR is using LAME to create mp3 files.

I honestly can't remember the last time I exported a MP3 file... I export to WAV every time and that goes on to SoundCloud.
