Why is bit depth 16?

Hi, I just noticed that in the audio engine/transport/clock section of the control bar it says 16 bit.  It used to say 32.  \

VS700 interface, new system in signature.  In the preferences 24 bit is selected and grayed out.  But says 16/96 in the control bar.

Confused.
Dave

Also:  if I start a new project it will default 44.1/16 (i never use this), then I get an error says the project must be 96k/32 and it will change to that.  But, still says 16.  Is it 32 or 16 or what?

The transport module shows the Record Bit Depth setting.
