Why no iPad app yet? Anyone know if it's in pipeline?
Why is it when I search the iPad app store I can find various apps for controlling your DAW via wifi. I look at them all and all other DAWs are supported by at least one app or another. Some with apps dedicated to certain DAWs. However absolutely no sign of one for SONAR. This app would make a massive difference to my studio work. When I record myself Playing or singing in the vocal booth I have to unplug my Mackie Control and take it in there with me and use it with another monitor I have in there. Anyone know if such an app is coming? Cheers zoffmeister

I can vouch for AC-7. I found out about it on a forum in here and got it. It was only $8 so if it did nothing else but work the transport for Sonar it would have been great for me. It is very easy to use and is specifically set up not just for Sonar use but for a variety of DAWs. It mimics a Mackie Control Surface so if you use that already you probably will be a happy camper.

Also, if you're using an android device, TouchDAW supports sonar -- http://www.humatic.de/htools/touchdaw/ It doesn't have a tablet-based interface yet (it's sized for phones) but that's planned for the next version.

Is it possible that Apple is not doing a lot of work on Windows applications? This is in answer to "Why no iPad app yet? Anyone know if it's in pipeline?"

I've been using Splashtop HD on my ASUS Transformer Honeycomb tablet (truly awesome device btw). You can see and control SONAR in all it's glory - for $9.99. Basically you just install the Splashtop streamer on whatever computer you want to see and control. Then you just pick the machine from the list of available computers on your network and viola - full touchscreen control (or in the case of the Transformer - touchscreen or qwerty dock) of SONAR.

AC 7 is the best I've used and check out S1MidiTrigger as well (if you're into Midi.) you can design your controller with as many knobs, sliders and buttons as you can fit on your iPad. Use it with the Matrix and you can effectively use it to perform with, much like "Live" or the "Maschine."

R I'm using Pocketcloud (same idea as Splashtop) at the moment, it's a free app, it's a little laggy (it works better with areo running) but it does work. Am going to try Brandons suggestion, soon. Until we get a "proper" app the best way to do what we are trying to do is to use an app like Splashtop or Pocketcloud and a propper DAW mxing app, I use Touch DAW and I have just got Wireless mixer working and touchfinger. I use a Xoom tablet. Unfortunatly there is only Ac7 for the Ipad at the moment that will control Sonar (I may be wrong) there is a really nifty app for the IPad that controls Logic and Protools, whether that gets ported to Android and or Sonar is another question. Peace Ben

Better to wait for the Windows 8 tablets. That way Cake can write one program that will run on both tablets and desktops.

I've tested out AC-7CoreMini a little bit on my iPod Touch 4 and it seems to work rather well with Sonar 4 and 7. Getting it set up was a little tricky. As it uses Mackie Control protocol my guess is that it will work with Sonar X1. Obviously I'm not looking to do any extensive mixing on an iPod Touch. But for tracking by myself it will be useful when I can't be sitting at the computer. Great app!

I've been using AC-7 with all my DAWs for quote some time. I'. running it on my iPhone. Works perfect for me. You need to run rptMIDI on your host PC. Works fine. Control transport, channel/aux faders, MSR plugins etc. I only need it for baisc puposes as the iPhone is a little small but it shows how well it can work. don't have yet but soon will have an iPad.

Zoffmeister, if you do try AC-7 and have problems post back and I may be able to help. I just recently got this working and it took a little messing around before I got it right. Like mudgel mentioned you have to install rptMIDI on host computer which acts like a virtual midi port on computer. Once installed and configured the virtual midi ports will show up in Sonar. Configure Sonar with a Mackie Control surface using these virtual midi ports. At this point Sonar would constantly show connecting but never connect until I hit the reset button on AC-7. Took me a while, and research, to figure that one out. I figured the thing just didn't work. Then hit the reset button and both Sonar and AC-7 where happy. Reset button is listed on a couple of the screens on AC-7. Obviously AC-7 needs to be in Sonar mode first. Also, you may need to open up the Mackie Control surface configuration screen in Sonar and make changes such as show meters, what the function keys do, etc.

I've always had performance problems when I tried to use Sonar through remote desktop... But the ability to control the transport wirelessly is super-convenient. That's why these "MIDI-over-WIFI" control surface apps like AC-7 and TouchDAW are so cool. They're literally a wireless Mackie Control that you can carry around with you. EDIT: just noticed that splashtop doesn't use standard windows remote desktop, but its own streamer. So it's possible that it works a lot better than RDP.

Tried RDP iPod app to control desktop on old computer with AMD athlon xp processor. Worked surprisingly well. Advantages include native Sonar interface to be able to do advanced editing. Disadvantage was fader control difficult as they lagged and tended to jump all over the place. Fader control using AC-7 was smooth.

I'm sure glad I got a Tranzport while they were still being made. Works great out of the box, no tweaking, no stinkin' wifi connection required. But I live in fear of the inevitable day when my trusty Tranzport will die, as all electronic devices seem to do, so I'm glad this new class of remote control software has come along. Now, if the old Tranzport can just continue to function long enough for these apps to mature...

The thing is though Bitflipper, my TouchDaw for my Xoom does not have anybugs, nore does wireless mixer. They are extremly fiddly to setup granted but I now have three differnt types of controllers that run very well of my tablet. The only one that has given me any trouble has been an app called fingermidi. It took me three weeks to figure out how to get it to run and it works but it does crash. I think this is because it started off as a IPAD app. This is where the above person has been having trouble I believe, the person is trying to run a windows program (Sonar) off a Apple product, does anyone know if there is any networking issues between macs and windows???? Caveat(I am speculating) But TouchDAW has no bugs, I am still trying to figure everything out but it's feature set is awsome and I would have no trouble controlling Sonar from anyroom in the house with this app. The only problem with this app is it looks boring but if it works and no bugs, well I remember Logic and that was cream cake to look at. Peace Ben

twisted6s, perhaps you need to add the port listed in rtpmidi to your router? That was mentioned on the software developers forum. seems like you have everything set up correct if you've added your computer in rtpmidi, connected your ipod/pad in rtpmidi, created a mackie control control surface in sonar using the rtp virtual midi ports and sonar shows connecting. Once I had that it was just a matter of reseting AC-7. Perhaps a firewall is blocking the connection either on the computer or your router. This is why I often dislike computers. seems like so many differences for causing problems Don't think apple has anything to do with it.

In RTPmidi you will see boxes for My Sessions, Directory, and Participants. When you create a new session (or click on an existing one) you will see who is set up to connect to it in the Participants window. You should be sure that your iPad and the PC Sonar is on are shown in the window for the session. You will also see some information about latency for each participant. If you see nothing but question marks in the latency column next to the participant name in the Participants window you can assume it is not communicating at this point for some reason. If the iPad you are running AC-7 on to control Sonar shows up in the Directory when you click on the session but NOT in the Participants window then highlight it and click on the Connect button under the Directory window. Hope this can help. Another thing to consider is if you have a weak WiFi signal or have multiple WiFi connection points in the studio/house. The iPad does NOT wander between access points correctly. This is a known problem with the iPad. Once again, look in RTPmidi for those question marks in the latency column next to the session participant in the Participants window in RTPmidi.

How do I get Sonar to show up in the participants window or directory? My iphone 4 shows in the directory and when I hit connect the iphone shows in the participants window with a good latency level, but PC-Sonar?? I've yet to see that in either Oh an wifi is good.

In order to see the PC to connect to you have to make sure that the Bonjour service is running. The easiest way to do this is to download and install iTunes on your PC if you have not done so already. That automatically installs Bonjour (which uses an Apple invented service location protocol) and makes it available for RTPmidi so that it can join your PC to any WiFi midi sessions it starts.
