Why you should care

Hi all,

So it's been a while since X1 came out. And people are still encountering problems and getting upset. (I've had some crashes and problems myself but I've just kind of accepted it as "normal" unfortunately).

Over the past while I've seen a number of people whom I respect in this forum not only voice their issues but disembark from the Sonar train to forge new frontiers with another set of tools!

I find this discouraging and depressing to see people of knowledge and soundness of mind disappear. It makes me wonder about the future of our beloved Sonar and the Sonar community. I admit I've grown tired of people complaining at times (enough people are complaining around me in real life, let alone on the forums!) but those of us who are happy and are not encountering problems should really have a change of heart and sympathize with those who are having issues.

Nothing in this world infuriates me more then having computer issues! People screw up and make mistakes and disappoint us, I've come to expect a certain level of disappointment from my fellow human beings, so it's not really that surprising when someone at work does something stupid or people close to you argue over dumb things, fight and get upset (I'm not saying any of this is acceptable, but that it's not really surprising given human nature). Nonetheless we generally expect people to be reasonable, even though we ourselves are not always reasonable and if we're honest with ourselves we know it.

BUT

when it comes to computers and stuff, when we come and sit down to do something we enjoy, when we've invested time and money and our getting away from all the riff raff and the struggles and joys of life to make some music, we expect things to work! We've payed for stuff that is marketed as the best thing ever, the latest and greatest tools blah blah blah.
Bottom line is, we expect our tools to work! People don't go to the store and buy broken stuff, people buy tools specific for their work. These tools are designed for a certain job and when they don't perform their function it can be upsetting, disappointing to say the least.

People problems seldom bother me as much as computer problems do, I'll sit for hours upset and angry trying to sort out what is wrong and why things aren't working, so I say to those of you who have a system working great: That's awesome, I hope it works for you, but don't make little of other peoples DAW problems, you probably know what it's like to have something not working the way its supposed to, give people the benefit of the doubt, as stupid as we are sometimes it's not always human error. To those of us who are experiencing issues, I say keep complaining but stay civil, explore all avenues to remedy your situation and don't just point fingers. As annoying as troubleshooting and trying to sort out problems are, try and use the appropriate channels to sort out issues first before flaming on here.

I don't see any reason why we should expect anything less than excellence and ease from our tools. The minute we settle for less than excellence, we undermine our own interests and sell ourselves short. Just like we do in real life, if we're not striving for excellence.. we sell ourselves short and do not reach our full potential / or are able to experience life to the fullest. (That's my philosophy anyways)

    windsurfer25x,

For the most part I agree with everything you say and the point you are trying to make, but for me if I have an issue I don't complain... I seek help.

We spend far too much time complaining here rather than looking for help.  There are times the people here can help and there are times when technical support is the only route.

I know that a lot of people don't work that way, but this forum and our enjoyment and/or use of the software would be far greater, IMHO.

I'm currently learning another product.  It's not because X1 stinks or crashing on me.  It's simply that Roland is drifting another direction.  They want to take their product one way and I'm wanting to stay on my path or go slightly the other way.  We're not heading in opposite directions, we're just getting farther and farther apart.

    In this new platform;

I can scale the GUI in percentages.  I have problems seeing some of the text - so I scale everything up 10-15%.  Can't use my screen resolution to because they are widescreen monitors and have a optimal resolution.

I can have friendly named MONO inputs so that my mixer channels or my outboard preamps aren't grouped in pairs.   I can also have friendly STEREO inputs as well.

The same thing goes for my 16 mono outputs.  I can also friendly name them in pairs if I want.

I can see a whole bunch of sends if I want maybe 10-15 or so without scrolling.  Great for setting up individual cue mixes.
I can see a bunch of FX as well.

I can resize the Fader/VU meter module as well as the Sends and FX inserts.

My icons don't disappear when I scroll the screen vertically.

I can reduce the size of the Track Pane and the track labels still show.  In fact, if it gets too small they will flip sideways so I know which track is which.

This is the stuff, I use so it matters to me.  I'm not looking for a recording app with an Ableton or Fruity Loops lite hanging off the side.

Mod Bod ... what are you using? If you don't want to say can you please PM me and let me know.

The scalable GUI alone would make me consider it.

    Aaron,

I don't know what to say... I'm sort of speechless but feel the need to comment on the incredible tone and high quality of your post.

I guess If I had to put it in a word; Sublime.

I wish I could present an idea as effectively as you just did.

     Good job!!!

Thanks for voicing your thoughts on the matter.

    best regards,
    mike

i havent needed tech support since v3 its always a thread somewhere with your issue, and the forum has been the best of help.. its hard for me to complain cause of all my years working with hardware. when something went wrong, you would have to send a unit out to be serviced, and wait weeks to get it back..the only thing we should complain about is WHY ARE PREAMPS SO F*<K:N9 EXPENSIVE..
