Wide Awake And Dreaming - Julibee/Karyn
If this were recorded on reel to reel, I would have been covered head to toe in tape when Karyn stepped in and rescued me. I'm glad she did. This is Wide Awake and Dreaming, an electro-pop something or other that Karyn very awesomely kept from straying into the bubblegum arena. Mixed by Karyn, bass by Karyn, Lyrics and Music, Mine. A HUGE thank you to her (and a giant case of Becan). Any mix and song crits appreciated. THANKS! Julianna http://soundcloud.com/juliannamcduffie/wide-awake-and-dreaming-karyn

Great JOB! Sounds fantastic on my system! I love your voice Julibee! The whispers at the beginning were distorted and I didn't understand the words but that may be me. Was that Karyn speaking at the end? I liked the balance and contrast of the percussion too!

Hey! Great stuff! Well done! Only listened to it on my Apple earbuds which probably doesn't do the song justice but it sounded like a great mix none the less. Nice song, nice vocals, cool arrangements. Cheers!!

WOW! That's the ticket! Incredibly haunting vocal, really nice arrangement, well put together. Nothing more to add, I'd rather go enjoy it some more.

Nicely done Jules and Karyn. Effects are great. My only crit is I find the vox and drums slight prevalent with respect to the the music. I would try to bring the synths a bit more forward and have them compliment the vocal texture. Otherwise a great result.

OOh! Thanks, guys! I wasn't sure how this would go over - In fact, I wasn't even sure Karyn would deign to work on it.... I know that I'm a little out there sometimes.... :) Really, really appreciate the ears. JB, I have unused vox tracks that would make a ghoul cry..... ;) Ken, yeah, this is just about the opposite of the pop-country I heard all the time growing up. Call me a rebel. Thank you Foxman. Trimph1, Karyn told me there was still a little room to boost if I wanted.... But I didn't wanna. Thats some nice vindication, right there. Marius! I'm glad you liked it! I really am! Just made my buddy in Sweden listen (at 3am), so I'm all over the Scandianvian internets this evening. :D Thank you, Jan. Love you, Bill. ;)

I like everything about this save the beatz. They need to be pushed back to keep in the mood of the tune. (I would also change the sounds of the kick drum, to something more bottom and less top, more ambient)

An interesting observation James, thanks. I was working from a stereo drum track were I basically had the choice of replace everything or go with what I was given. I chose to work with the track. The kick has been low end boosted, and I used transient shaper to lengthen the 'ring' a little. But I deliberately avoided a thundering, sub-shattering thump in favour of something more akin to early '80s synth style. The snare sound is deliberately thin and 'metalic' for the same reason. With the overall balance I was trying to get a juxtaposition between the washy pads of the backing and the punch of the drum track, matching the tone of the lyrics. A line between real world and dream world with two distinct styles mixed into the same song. Whether it worked or not is open to debate, but the "loud" drums were intended to balance against the main vocal, and in that context I don't feel they're over loud. I know I broke a few rules in the mix, but that's what rules are for aren't they? Thanks for the comments and critique.

GREAT colab! I love the mix it's so in your face but the space is sooooo huge. I'm really diggin that piano riff. Julianna at times your vocals made me think I was listening to Madonna. EXCELLENT job! Kev

My fault, there... But! I agree with Karyn, and I like the definition she gave them in relation to the song. And I'm glad she broke a few rules. Rules give me a headache. :) Bapu, you big sweetie!! "So good, I liked it".... Thanks Bub! :) Wook, thanks for all your support, here and everywhere. I suppose there's no getting around a Madonna influence for a girl who grew up in the 80s, Kev... :) Thanks, Lynn!

Stereo drums... Should I have bounced that as mono? I didn't think to. No no no, I meant as opposed to having each instrument as a seperate track, or using the midi file you gave me to completly replace the drum sounds with my own... The Drum track was fine Jules, honest.

Oh! That reminds me.... Did you happen to look at that midi file? I previewed it (just with default windows player) and didn't hear anything. I just wondered of the data was there at all? I'll come clean and admit that this was a Reason drum track (Redrum)--- which is actually a drum machine--- I don't think bouncing each drum seperately is an option. But, I freaking love designing drums in that thing....

"kids these days... with their hula-hoops, and surfboards..." this sounds hip & modern to me... but then, how would I know... I do know that I like it a lot... I love your cool voice... I really like the lyrics too... I'm not crazy aboyt all the millions of kick-drum hits... but I'm old and stubborn... I think this is an excellent production... although I'd like to hear a more defined bass part... but again, what do I know about modern pop... this really is very good... well done ladies...

Oh, Dave that little comment about my original mix being ok made my day! I'm trying so hard to get better! I was chatting with my usual producer (who seems to be allergic to making music these days, bummer), and he actually likes my original a little better, for the sole reason that it sounds a little more non-traditionally mixed (well, YEAH, since I'm still pretty clueless)... He did admit that Karyn's isn't exactly predictable, either, though... I sent it to Karyn, wondering what would happen if someone else mixed it... Like... If it could be shinier/brighter/better eq'd (I'm even more clueless in the EQ department). Karyn claims not to have listened to my first mix.... So, you'll have to confirm that with her, :) Thank you, Daryl! Hahaha! Frank! And here I am thinking its RETRO!!! LOL! I grew up on ShoeGaze and New Order style dance tracks, which explains the kick drum hits. Ah... The kids these days... :D. Thanks for listening, my friend!

In the beggining it reminded alot of an "OPUS III - Mindfruit" song. The main vocals were to loud over the music for me, I wanted to hear the music wrapped around the vocals a little more but that may be the cheap little speaker I was listening to...it's the end of the song now and I'm still wide awake and listening...nice job!
