Will I Loose My Work if I Do a System Restore?

Hello Guys--

An upgrade to my antivirus program whacked my system. I've done some editing in Sonar since the last Windows system restore point was created, so I'm wondering if I'll lose that work if I do a Windows system restore?

Thanks!

Loading a Windows "Restore Point" does not affect files (such as Cakewalk project files). It only reverses program and OS changes (so it would/could fix the AV problem without touching your files).

BUT... make absolutely sure that we are discussing that type of restore point. If you load a previous "Image" then it will indeed wipe out any new files or changes to files since the image was created.

So yeah... just make sure you know the difference between the two and how they are executed through the Windows recovery options.

    Cheers.

No, this is a standard Windows restore point--no imaging involved. Thanks for the warning.

Your info consistent with what I found online, but I just want to make absolutely certain I wouldn't lose Sonar edits.

    Thank you!

PS: If you have any access to the files at all in the current system state go in and copy/backup the files you are worried about (and really anything you feel is important) so that IF the recovery goes wonky somehow you still have your files.

Like if the WORST happens and you have to load a previous image or a full reinstall of everything at least you can just copy the files back over to the system.

Yeah, good idea. I'm also going to create another Windows restore point prior to the restore--again, just in case.

    Thanks again!

Cool. One more tip/idea if you decide to do that backup idea from my last post BUT the antivirus or whatever is preventing you from getting at the files try booting into "Safe Mode". AV's and other startup gack, etc won't be allowed to load and that might allow you access to system files. This doesn't affect connected devices like USB drives and whatnot so you can still make the backups.

    Cheers.

Thanks. Fortunately the byproduct of the upgrade wasn't that destructive. It just removed all of my network connections and won't let me add them back, even when I unload the protection.

Btw, this is the 1st issue I've had with this product. In fact, I went with this one after a recommendation by my DAW builder. Oh well.

System restore lets you know what will change before you start it. You can adjust how much it changes.

Right, and it just listed the av program upgrade.

    Thanks!

Happy Ending. Did another creation of a system restore point in case going back to the previous restore point made things worse. I also did a backup of the CW project I'm working on.

All went well. I was able to restore back where my network connections are back, and I didn't lose any edits/work on my project.

    Yay!
(Careful if ESET wants to upgrade your AV program to ver 9!)

    Thanks all!!

You should be fine, it only restores Windows files and the like.

As a heads up, I stopped using Windows System Restore with Sonar. Not like it didn't work, it was just kind of cumbersome and didn't include my data from Sonar. So I switched to using Rollback Rx. It's an alternative to WSR but works better when you're working on projects. So may want to give that a try.

Curious. What Sonar data was being lost?

It was actually moreso the configurations and windows sound data I had. More Windows then Sonar, but it definitely affected Sonar. I ended up having to repair the drivers.

Thanks for the welcome! Long time lurker :P

I really never trust a computer not to mess up…
I have never been able set or recover a restore point my Trash-Sheba (Toshiba) it crashes and start a new windows install without asking. We have 3 and one burned up, one never shuts down and mine…
Well getting side tracked… Ha! Really you always need to back up your CW projects and put them off system. I use USB and external hard drives… Saving as a CW Bundle (CWB File) puts all elements of a project into one tidy file.

    peace! :)

    Hay look,
Somethings are not locked in stone... lol 3/18/2019
