Will I be ok with Sonar 8.5?
I've been using MC6 on my laptop with very good performance up to the 12 track level. I have a friend who is going to give me Sonar 8.5. It looks like the recommended system requirements are basically the same as MC6. Is this to good to be true? I would think Sonar would need a lot more processing power than MC6 but it sure doesn't read that way.

Just that you know: You can't register your 8.5 then. The SONAR lisences are not transferable. You'll be using an "illegal" version. What version of 8.5 are you talking about? There's not so much difference between the Home Studio and MC, and not so dramatically much between Studio and Home Studio. The basic functions of these programs need about equally much horsepower, but Home Studio 8.5 and Producer 8.5 are totally different beasts as a whole. It's some of the heavy VSTs in Studio or Producer that require more.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Aside from the license thing.... yeah, they all work on the same system requirements. http://www.cakewalk.com/Download/files/EULA_Downloads.pdf That is the license agreement. It does say you can not transfer it. I would give Cakewalk Customer Service a call and talk to them about this issue. I might be wrong, but they may allow this kind of transfer if the other person giving the software to you has removed ALL copies from their machines. Then again...they may require you to buy the license. If you have to buy the license, it is probably just as cheap to crossgrade from MC to X1 essentials at about the same or a lower cost. It's worth a phone call to find out. You do want to abide by the laws and stay legal here.

They won't transfer licenses even if you call them. they will offer you an upgrade on MC to X1 Essentials.

I don't intend to do anything illegal. As I understand this copy hasn't been registered. I was just wondering about system requirments. I have registered copies of other vsts. Should I leave everything installed? Or are they tied to MC6? Should I un-install everything and start from scratch? Thanks for your help you guys are worth a lot to us newbies!

No need to uninstall anything. Just install the new one. All CW programs can co-exist without problems, if they are comfortable with the OS.

Yeah...ditto. You never need to uninstall any cake products to install a newer or older one. They automatically look at the VST folder which is common to them all..... and they will share and share alike. I have 4 DAW platforms on my computer and I can choose any of them and the same plugs and VST's and FX are available in them all. Just one big happy family.
