Will you watch the Grammies?

Hey,

Just curious what folks 'round here think about the Grammies these days.

I usually try to tune in and watch to see what's happening in the current popular music world. However, I usually record it and watch it later later while zooming through the parts I'm not interested in.

Your take?

haha.. it was on live8.. what can I say.. it was more funny her swearing just because Snoop Dogg had previously and she wanted to look cool.. remember this is 3 pm in the afternoon on national TV... you'd think they'd have sense at that age..they had a mass of complaints about it. I'm not mug enough to pay the £120-150 for a ticket to see her in concert. (thats like 1 or 2 vst-i's... or 4 sample packs.. or the sonar 8 upgrade.hehe)

although she's gone back to the states probably, yay.. no fake brit accent.. from what I gather your a bit older than me.. but madge is 50...

heck Kylie minogue is a bit older than me (5 years I think).. I still wouldn't mind taking her out for a fish n chip supper as long as she didn't sing.haha

some women age well , some don't.... there is something about Helen Mirran, even though shes a lot older..

I'm one to talk, I look double my age..lol

Sure... why not. I've seen worse. It at least gives me a idea of what the "industry" is doing, to itself mostly. Top sales artists, industry moguls, struggling artists, what could be more entertaining than that? Please start the list with zero.

I keep hoping some self-respecting Grammy winner will pull a George C. Scott or a Marlon Brando and politely (or not-so-politely!) decline the honor, citing the hypocrisy and fakery of the industry puppetmasters. But I guess musicians are not as bold as actors when their careers are on the line. Patton'll kick Bono's rump any day of the week.

space_cowboy , we have a thing called the "brits". some of us are old enough one year when Mick Fleetwood / Sam Fox (the woman with the big...... eyes.. was on it)
    it was beyond woeful..

Milli Vanilli , well they weren't the first to do that stunt.. loads more have. Boney M was the one that does come to mind.. and lets face it how many singers have backing singers that have a far better voice, but they don't have the image .. so onstage the main vocal is slightly dipped on the mixer and a pre-record is used..

although you gotta find it funny when the sampler or tape messed up when MV played out live.. alas I can't find the clip of it but have seen it on tv.. and they were trying to sing to the tape stutter..hehe

The wireless mic died one measure in... someone moved quickly and they swapped the mic on he fly in the cut away.

A backing track would have been helpful :-)

Mike , do they have it over there where you have to license wireless mic's? I mean thats what my friends does for a living for all the concerts etc.. for the frequencies..

I could see using wifi etc would be a a way around that.. I think my friend did mention it, as they have to pay a fee with the old style mic's.

We have on site people known as Frequency Coordinators at large events.

I'm unaware of governmental licensing for anything under 2 watts... (I think it's 2 watts), but If you have a press or media pass at a large event you often times HAVE to seek out a frequency coordinator and get your frequencies reserved. The coordinators do stay on top of errant wireless users and shut them down if they do not comply... failure to comply can result in forfeiture of the media credentials.

I think some of the big cities have semi voluntary coordination that is regulated thru the local film commissions... I just don't know the details about that... but it's seemingly reserved for situations where multi big productions are occurring in close proximity.

If you get over 2 watts you at least need a basic radio license for starters.

    best regards,
    mike

radiohead? mike.. dunno.. I mean they aren't exactly the most successful singles seller BUT have a massive following worldwide..They make music different from the norm.. they aren't on a major label now, BUT will still sell loads due to their fan base from many years. I think even if people don't like them, they respect them for being different.

not sure about Gweneth.. but her and Chris, go out in public.. lead a normal life.. use the train etc. they are a showbiz couple BUT you don't see them in the papers for being headline hungry (there are plenty more who are like that here). When did Gweneth join coldplay? haha... thing is people in London have more time for her than when Madonna was here.. she was just too showbiz and fake.. Gweneth seems to be like the girl next door in ways.

Katy was very manufactured.. sorry, but thats how it comes across.. so she kissed a girl. .big deal..haha

it's a bit like errm Lilly Allen getting famous solely off myspace.. sure she did..lol.. that came across as very engineered also.

I am way out of of touch with the new stuff (intentionally). I watched the video link for this Lil Wayne. Is he actually respected for his guitar playing? What he did sucked big time in this 34 second vid. I don't get it.

I watched 20-second of the Grammy's and turned it on to a bunch of people rapping away, one of them being what appeared to be a pregnant woman, who should have definitely kept her pregnancy figure private, not exposed to national TV. I just don't get it.

Guess I'm just uncool and unhip.

I watched to whole mess! I got through it due to several glasses of wine to keep me relaxed. There was not one single good performance IMHO. You could not hear any vocals, and when you did they sucked. Much of the vocals were lip synced. I'm ready for Hip-Hop (RAP) to take a long vacation. I just don't get it, it is not "musical", its degrading, and I'm just ready to hear some real music again. Anybody remember a little thing called a "melody"?

    Hello,

I watched the whole show. That's the way to get a dose of the current crop of acts without having to spend much time with the radio on.

I watched 20-second of the Grammy's and turned it on to a bunch of people rapping away, one of them being what appeared to be a pregnant woman, who should have definitely kept her pregnancy figure private, not exposed to national TV. I just don't get it.

Hmmm. This harkens back to the days when women were expected to "hide" the fact that they were pregnant. I ask you what is wrong with seeing a pregnant women's body - it is a very beautiful thing. In this case it is a current hit maker, MIA, a fave of my 20-year old daughter. If you could have stepped out of the "serious" suit you were wearing you would have noticed that her costume was pretty comical and design to be so. To bad you can't take a joke.

You should have watched more than 20 seconds. You would have heard, Adele (a UK soul writer and singer) Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, John Mayer, Coldplay, Radiohead, Taylor Swift and Miley Cirus, Kenny Chesney, Paul McCartney, Justin Timberlake (have I named any rap artists yet?), Neil Diamond (but his voice is really not what it once was), Kid Rock singing (but he never could sing LOL), Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood and Sugerland to name a few. Unfortunately, I missed U2 at the very beginning.

There was not one single good performance IMHO.

Not even any of those listed above?
