Win 10 Pro-Read Only bug? Am I missing something here? Hope so

Everything I found on the web did NOT work. This read only crap is a joke. Sorry, but it is.
Of course, read only is NOT checked. I took ownership, permissions, etc.

    Sometimes downloaded or copied DLL's, CHM's etc need to be "unblocked" in Windows 10.

    From what I can remember, the unblock button is right at the bottom of the properties dialog under the usual read-only type checkboxes.

    Exactly what is the "read only" problem?  I don't recall this, and I have Win 10 Pro.

    I have a few USB external drives for backup and\or storage. When I open a document, edit it and try to save it I get the meesage it is read only. To save it I must change the name, ewhich kind of defeats the purpose. really don't want 2 of everything.

    In the old days this message was only seen when copying from a CD\DVD because of course the items were read only on the optical device. But should not be that way on a hard drive. I have both SSD ext's and regular Mechanical exts.

    I guess It is an ownership\permission deal. Which I thought I rectified. Will try again. PIA

    OK seem sit is a MS Office thing. But I am the admin. I gave myself full control but didn't help. On the web some reported Bitdefender caused this. But I shut down Bit defender completely, no help. It has a safe files module but it is always off.

    So now I am investigating the Unknown account in each file.

    Looks like your unknown account is a security identifier (SID). If you are seeing that in a place where you would normally see a generic identity like users guests administrators etc. or a named computer account holder, then likely the SID has been orphaned. That might happen if the file access is granted to an identity on one computer, and the file is then moved to another computer. The administrator, or guest, etc. or named account on one computer do not have the same SID on another computer even though they may have the same friendly name.

    You might find this helpful if you are unable to change ownership/permissions from an administrator account. Be sure you are at a level of the file system that is at or above the level you want to change, or settings to propagate the change to nested folders below (inheritance) may thwart your efforts. The checkbox to enable inheritance is accessed via the advanced button under the file/folder properties security tab.

    Hey Slartabartfast;
    Thanks, you are correct. So I will read the articles and go from there.

    Thanks again
