Win 10

Hello all,

Was wondering what the differences were between Win 10 Home and Pro with regards to Sonar and audio in general. I'm contemplating getting anew interface (Babyface Pro) and moving on from Win 7... I already have a copy of Win 10 Home that I downloaded during the free period, but thought maybe Pro might be better stability wise...

Thx!

There is NO difference between Home and Pro regarding stability, audio or SONAR.
Pro has a better network capability. If you work with 15 computers and a Server you should prefer Windows 10 Pro.
The important thing from "Pro" is, that you can login to a domain-server in a company network.
It is also not possible to run a remote desktop session from an other computer to the Home Version.
But if you work with 1 or 5 computers in a small network, Windows 10 Home is OK.

Win 10 Home forces the scheduling of updates.  You can control updates with Win 10 Pro.
As there have been some issues with Sonar and Win 10 updates you may want to take this into consideration.

FWIW,
I always advise win pro because of the ability to use remote desktop and domain-networking if needed.

BTW, I updated to Win 10 Creator a few days ago and only had to reset my XLN account. Everything is running sweet.

Home also won't recognize multiple processors. I'm running a Dell Precision T5400 with 2 x Xeon processors and had to move to Pro to be able to use both.

The biggest difference with Win 10 Pro for me is getting control over Windows 10 updates.  Pro comes with the group policy editor that lets you defer updates and feature upgrades until you are ready for them.

I am in favor of updating, but I like the bugs to be worked out first!

I typically wait 2-3 weeks to apply the monthly update rollups, and 4 months or so for the feature upgrades (Anniversary or Creators update).

One of the old diffs (don't know if it is still a diff) is sharing the same folder with different names and different privileges. I believe if you want to have one folder with two share names on the network, you need to go for Pro. There isn't a lot of need for this imho. I just remember it from the old days.

Does anyone know. Can you transfer Windows Licenses.

I bought a work laptop from a High street shop, but looks like they have given me a hacked version of Windows, and it's asking for Authorization. I'm wondering if I bought Pro for my Music Laptop, could I transfer the License from my Music Laptop to my Work laptop, and install Pro onto my Music laptop?

Is there any way to make the shop that you bought the laptop from buy you a real license for the computer?  If they said it comes with Windows, as a reseller, they should be legally required to provide an official certificate of authenticity.

Or maybe get a refund?

Else, you will probably have to bite the bullet and pay for a new Windows license.  If you upgrade your Music Laptop, that upgrade will be tied to that device.  You cannot activate the same Windows license on two different devices.  You might be able to move it, but I assume your goal is to have two working laptops ...

I run a RME BabyfacePro on a gaming laptop with Windows 10 Home with no problems, but I haven't tried the Creators update yet. Apparently you can trick Windows 10 Home not to download big updates automatically by setting your wifi connections to "metered", so for the time being my computer has not automatically done the latest update. Before the BabyFace Pro, my old MOTU 828x would make Windows 10 give me the Blue Screen of death on occasion with a message related to the MOTU driver.

That "metered" setting is a great hack!  I'll just add that you will need to set it on each wireless network that you connect to.  Otherwise, if you are traveling with a laptop and connect to a new wireless network, you could receive unwanted updates.  The setting should be remembered for any connections that you save and visit again.

Vietnamese shop, it's just not worth the stress. I'm going to go in next week, but they are pretty useless.

So I'm guessing I need to buy a windows10 but if I'm going to, I'd prefer to use it for my Good laptop. So if I could transfer the Good laptops Windows license to the dodgy laptop, and then put a clean instill of a my new Windows onto this Good Laptop, then I think I make the best out of a bad situation.

I don't know if you can move licenses this way.I've never bought an opertating system before. Things like OEM confuse the hell out of me

Officially you can't move a Windows OEM license, since it is supposed to be tied to the hardware it was sold with.  But the rules have been a gray area for resellers, as MS seems to "allow" OEM licenses to be sold without hardware attached online.

Back in the Win XP and Win 7 days a lot of home builders would use the same OEM license each time they upgraded to new hardware, and it usually worked with a telephone activation.

I haven't tried it since Windows 10, but MS has changed their activation system a bit.  Must be due to all that piracy in Asia ...

Windows 10 is now activated with a "digital entitlement".

In Windows 10 (Version 1607 or later), you can link your Microsoft account to the Windows 10 digital license on your device. This can help you reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter if you make a significant hardware change later, such as replacing the motherboard.

https://support.microsoft...-after-hardware-change

I run a local account only, but I would consider doing this temporarily if I was planning a hardware upgrade.  I would switch back to local only after the upgrade if the link was persistent.

Windows 10 Home with metered wifi here. You have to be diligent about manual updates though. If you use Defender it'll need updating regularly to keep current.
