Win 7 - burning cd - use windows built-in burner or another software say..nero ?
Hi, I have 2 questions. 1) Is Win 7 built in cd burner software good to go ? In my Win XP and previous Win OS, I usually used Nero that is packaged with the CD/DVD drive. In my new Win 7 PC setup, after installing a new CD/DVD drive, and in a hurry, I did not install Nero and just use Win 7 default burner for CD burning (wav files from X1 projects) and it seems ok - I place a bunch of wav files into a folder, and the folder have a 'burn CD' option and I just use that. 2) How about DVD burning.. is Win 7 capable of burning DVD with it's default software (without Nero ?). Thanks!

I use Nero (full paid version) for all my audio CD burning. I use the Nero Burning ROM program which allows more options on burning. I have a USB connected bank of 5 PATA (IDE) CD/DVD burners that I use for audio as they will burn at 8X (my audio CD burning "standard"). I can also burn 5 audio CD's at a time. I have SATA CD/DVD drives (2) in my PC tower but the lowest burning speed they will go to is 16X and audio CD's burned at 16X can be a problem on some older audio CD players. I do very little DVD burning but what I have it's been done with Nero.

Thanks Fireberd, I like the Nero interface too, but mine is always the half version supplied with new CD/DVD drives, but those are all the features I required. Even the half version would have more features than the bare Win 7 built-in burner. Just trying to install as little software to the new DAW if possible :) Yes, I do find burning some CD don't work for older audio CD players. I wonder if it's because of the burning speed, and it's quite impossible find lower speed burners these days.

your answer to both is yes..it will burn just fine, dvd's too...but your hardware must be capible of doing it as well .. open up your finished products in windows explorer..then right click it...send to: (your cd/dvd player)

Like you, I had Nero in XP, but when I upgraded to Win7, it wasn't compatible. After trying Win 7's burning utility, I found it a bit too basic... Still, I couldn't bring myself to spend $50 (that seems to be the usual price for burning software)... Turns out there are a number of freeware burners that are Win7 compatible. After a bit of online searching, I found BurnAware Free... I don't miss Nero at all, and so far it does everything I need.

Well I did spend the money for Nero and I'm sorry I wasted it, even though in my case it was only 40 bucks. The freebee that came with my Sony DVD burner had more useful features than the W7 compatible version I paid for (by useful, I mean the ones I used). Furthermore, the new interface isn't nearly as intuitive as the limited edition XP-compatible version.
