Win 7 - how do I force Windows to use the same audio output between programs?

Hi guys,

I run Win 7 32 bit with an RME HDSP9652 card in ASIO. My main out is set to SPDIF in the Audio Devices box in Windows. However, when I switch between Sonar, Soundforge, CD Arch, Media Player etc, the other programs keep trying to play via other ports such as my GuitarPort etc. How do I force all the programs to use the same (SPDIF) out? It seems Windows might be doing it.. I think.. :O)

    Win7 -> Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback -> Select RME HDSP9652 -> "Set Default" -> "Default Device"

    You may have to Select RME HDSP9652 again, and then:
    Properties -> Advanced -> deselect "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"

    you can use the same card as mentioned

    BUT you might get some issues between switching.. gain / sample rate issues..  not sure if it's the same with the SPDIF and it's a fixed level.

    but other things might cause gain issues.. I leave things to the default card that aren't for sequencing. e.g. I'll edit samples with the onboard while having sonar open using asio on my other card.. same again with recycle.

    I don't use it for everything, simply to make sure I don't get any speaker damage / clipping.

    things like "play in background" also have an effect.

    Win7 -> Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback -> Select RME HDSP9652 -> "Set Default" -> "Default Device"

    You may have to Select RME HDSP9652 again, and then:
    Properties -> Advanced -> deselect "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"


    This will do the trick provided you're using programs that use the default audio device.  More advanced audio programs like Sonar ignore the Windows default have their own audio driver selections and output options.  For that kind of thing you'll have to set your desired output in each of those programs by searching through the options.

    Windows can't use ASIO driver. Nor can it operate at anything besides 16 bit 44.khz so be careful if you have Windows sounds active and Windows is using your main sound card.

    The best thing is to have your onboard card handle Windows sounds and your pro card look after your DAW.

    Not true. Windows can operate at other settings. (DVD, BluRay etc) However default Win sounds are 16/44.

    The best thing is to have your onboard card handle Windows sounds and your pro card look after your DAW.
    +1. Best way to ensure your pro audio card isn't being hi-jacked.
