Win10 Update issues for anyone?

Windows just installed some updates and now SONAR is crashing on me. My default project loads but another crashes with an error in the "CompPkgSup.DLL" module. I think I'm gonna try and roll-back the Win update and see what's what but figured I'd ask on here to see if anyone else has had this problem?

that sux, i have only recently let my machines update to the anniversary version after all the dust settled, and disabled updates again, prior to that i remained on 1511 or something for many months. only let it update after the guinea pigs have had at it and the dust has settled, i'll only let it update every 6 to 12 months, if that.

Interesting . . . I've just spent the last hour wrestling with, and undoing the last windows update which made me think I had a virus or something, since many programs (including Sonar) and my Edge browser were not acting properly . . . now I go to the Sonar forum and the first thread I see is about the last windows update ?

Sonar is running well after the update undo, but I am now nervous about this last Win 10 update which now wants to update itself again . . . I think I'll turn off the windows update service until I can read more about it ?

I chose to not install the "feature update" that I believe was being delivered, in stead just taking the security release. Sonar is fine for me.

My typical plan is to wait 3 weeks after patch Tuesday, then take a complete disk image first, before applying the Microsoft updates.  If I see problems, then I will restore the most recent image an wait for MS to issue revised updates.

Hopefully by waiting for the initial 3 weeks, MS will have made the necessary fixes.  This way I stay up to date, but lag slightly behind, while the unwashed masses beta test the latest updates for me

Apparently there is a bug in Tuesday's update that breaks numerous audio and video applications (specifically DirectShow, for which a non-specific "security update" has been applied).

Fortunately, the applications affected include Windows Media Player. That's fortunate because while MS might not place a high priority on a bug that just affects DAW users, WMP is a whole 'nother matter.

FWIW, neither SONAR nor WMP have been impacted here.

Yup, that's the one, SF. Sit tight for a few days, I'll bet that problem magically disappears next Tuesday. It seems to be getting some attention over at MS, as it apparently can cause Explorer to crash, too. That's the kind of bad news that mobilizes emergency patch teams. Follow that first link and go to the second page, where someone has posted a possible workaround.

Did a quick search, it looks like this CompPkgSup.DLL (WMP) issue was spotted early February, so it looks like a known bug that has resurfaced in the latest update. Good new is, like bitflipper mentionned, it got fixed quickly the first time around.

I had a different win10 debacle last week. I only connect to the internet for sw updates. Just got a focusrite 6i6, came with a bunch of plugins. Plugged in the usb adapter and, no internet access. Did the research, pages and pages about this…
On the phone with ms for hours trying every net-related fix, nada. So yesterday I decided to try a different usb port again,  had tried that on Thursday, didn't work, but somehow it did.
    With ms you never know…
On a new ssd drive with a fresh copy of win10, 4 months old…

I've always preferred to buy used cars over new. One of the reasons I do so is that a used car has already had a good shakedown. Things most likely to fail are minor, normal and - most important - predictable. With a new car, the engine could fall out.

With Windows automatic updates, we're getting a new car every Tuesday.

Thanks, bitflipper, for pointing that out. Checking for win10 updates showed that now there was KB4015438 pending. After installing it, the crash is gone. So everybody who installed KB4013429 last week should run win10 update!

This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:

  • Addressed a known issue with KB4013429 that caused Windows DVD Player (and 3rd party apps that use Microsoft MPEG-2 handling libraries) to crash.
  • Addressed a known issue with KB4013429, that some customers using Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 1607 Client with Switch Embedded Teaming (SET) enabled might experience a deadlock or when changing the physical adapter’s link speed property. This issue is most commonly seen as a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION or when verifier is enabled a VRF_STACKPTR_ERROR is seen in the Memory dump.

I updated to KB4015438, which is the latest update available, and still have the same error.

I CAN open and play projects with no video. But the error still happens on the project I have video loaded. Unfortunately for me I happen to be writing a score and desperately need to sync video.

    Any suggestions?

Whew! Thanks for this thread. Yes, a client project wouldn't open, even though I had been versioning--suddenly none of the versions would open! Freaked me out until I saw this thread. Some of my other projects would open but this one in particular had an embedded MP4 file I was scoring to. That must have been the culprit.

The windows update fix mentioned above took care of the problem.
