WinXP SP2 for DAW

Hi:

Is SP2 for WinXP still a no-no for DAW's? I used to hear that there were problems with SP2, but I've been out of circulation for a while and am wondering if that's still true.

Thanks!

I did not fair well with an SP2 "upgrade" But a clean install with an SP2 disk works just fiine. BTW, If you have an old SP1 lisence, you can still load the SP2 disk and use your old registration key. My problems were with the firewire fix. Maybe I monkeyed it up when I installed the patch, I don't know. I just know a clean install from the SP2 CD worked fine.

Hope that helps. A lot of people use SP2 with little problem.

You could slipstream it. SP2 working fine here too straight off the disc. No way on earth I would download an update, go buy it.

So an SP2 upgrade might cause problems? How can I do a clean install of SP2 (slipstream) on top of SP1 without erasing the programs and files already on the disk? Do I do a Repair install or something like that?

    Thanks!

I would normally stay away from such statements, but I can testify firsthand you *might* want it straight from disk, I had 6.2 installed consecutively on both, and only from disk there were NO issues, at all. On the upgraded it would not install Session Drummer 2, for example, even after a reinstall. You definitely don't want that.

Probably something to do with for registering plugins or whatever - hope I NEVER have to find out exactly what goofed up.

I eventually just installed SP2 from Windows Update, and never had any problems (with Sonar or otherwise). I think it's pretty safe at this point.

All my clients on SP2... 0 issues. I've done SP2 "upgrade" installations, SP2 CD installs, and SP2 "slipstreamed"... all OK.

I've always believed (and Jim Roseberry pointed this out on a similar thread) that most companies develop and test on the latest version of an OS.

Sure, testing will be done on previous versions, but it is understood that the vast majority of users will apply upgrades and patches as they become available -- and therefore being compatible with the latest version of an OS is critically important.

I had XP with SP1 when I bought my computer and set up my DAW: I had frequent shutdowns and warnings from my computer before my drivers finally failed. I got a reload with SP2 and, hey presto, my set-up has worked like a dream for over two years.

I just did a major re-install of all my programs on a new 200 gig WD hardrive. I designed my DAW to run with XP SP2, Sonar Home Studio 6XL, and Adobe's Audition 2.0 as the main music programs, and M-Audio's 1010LT and 2496 soundcards. I'm happy to report everything is running very smooth. I'll also be putting on some midi sound programs that do indeed work well with XP.

As you all should know, Vista, doesn't work with the 1010LT or 2496 yet, so this is why I chose to go back to Windows XP.

Vista is just too new and not compatible with enough stuff to work with it 100%. I just got tired of waiting around for new drivers for my soundcard and printer, so XP it is. Now everything is working just fine !!
