Thanks, everyone.  I was able to roll back and I do have audio again.

Until I am positive I can get things working on Win 10, how do I block another forced upgrade?

You turn off Windows Update simple as that. It is in your control panel. I am on Win7 myself and it has never attempted to update. Also keep your audio machine off line. That is also smarter as well. But even when I do go on line it has never attempted to update either because I have told it not to.

Usually to avoid the problem is on W7 when updates are ready is to uncheck the upgrade to Windows 10. They try to slip it past you.

But turning off Windows Update completely means that there wont ever be any updates ready either. It simply will never look for updates once it is off.

There are two registry keys to set to prevent the upgrade and GWX from running. Detailed in this Microsoft KB article that has been up for a while https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351

You can use a tool like Never 10 to do the job as well. Have yet to see a computer with those two registry keys set that has prompted for or upgraded to Windows 10.

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

Subkey: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
DWORD value: DisableGwx = 1

This link describes how to remove KB3035583 (Windows 10 Update) and how to prevent it from reloading.  With this method you don't need to worry about turning off Windows Updates or accidentally re-installing the update via Windows Update.

Pretty simple.  1) Remove KB3035583, 2) Go to Windows Update and hide KB3035583 so it doesn't re-update.

The price you pay for control of your own destiny. Simply run the updater when you want to.

If you don't want Win10, you can use this utility that Steve Gibson wrote.
He's had many useful free utilities for years.  Also the guy that made the first light pen on the Mac years ago.

hanks everyone for all the help.
Jesse and others who said "it's time to move on," note that my Vs-700 does not work in Win10 and I had no audio:  I could not even play a CD.

Sometime I will figure out how to make everything work n der Win10, but I don't have time right now.

For example, I have a brand new MOTU 896mk3 in the rack that I have never used.  I could get Win10 drivers for it, and then find a generic control surface solution for the VS console.  The issue is that I want to do this when I have time: not whenever Windows decides to take control of my studio.

You can get the v700 working pretty easily under Win 10. Full instructions in the first post of this thread. All credit to others who worked it out, I just posted the initial question.

I think what I did was not agreeing to the terms and it rolled back whatever it had done in the background and said Windows 10 failed to install. I'm like thanks!

Yes, this is a guaranteed way to stop the install. Happened to my oldest son and he DID NOT agree to the terms and Win 10 backed itself out.

I don't know if I would say easily. that's an 8 step process of pretty detailed work.
I will say this though, that's some great work right there John.
i hadn't realized there was a way to get it working on windows 10
but you guys got together and made it happen. that's impressive.

The "not agreeing to terms" and backing out doesn't always work.  There is a post on the Windows 7 forum of a user that did that and now Win 7 won't run and he has lost all his user data (he didn't have it backed up).   And, as its a Dell, the Dell recovery on the hard drive will no longer run as the MBR on the hard drive has been changed.  He is stuck having to do a complete new install with an OS disc.

Exactly why I ordered the recovery disks. Just hope they work when I need them. Whoever thought to put a recovery system on the same hard drive as the OS just to save 53¢ on a DVD disk.... I have no intelligible words for such people!

Re: Windows 10 - I Was Afraid of This 2016/05/23 08:41:18 (permalink)
Roland is not support the PCR keyboards in Win 10. My PCR500 is working fine in Win 10, with the modified Win 7 driver.  There is a thread in the computer section and hardware section on how to do this.  Very easy to modify.

This same method can be used for many other Roland devices that are not supported by Roland in Win 10.
Initially, I used that method to get my Roland Octa-Capture working in Win 10, as Roland didn't have Win 10 drivers when Win 10 was released.

Re: Windows 10 - I Was Afraid of This 2016/05/23 08:53:41 (permalink)
I had the same problem with the PCR 500 and amitte provided a great solution awhile back right here in the forums here> http://forum.cakewalk.com/The-ultimate-guide-to-get-your-RolandEdirol-devices-to-work-with-Windows-10-Updated-m3267234.aspx
Very easy to do with solution #2 and my PCR 500 has been performing rock solid.
I also have a recurring problem with an older machine with an M-audio Delta 1010 PCI card that won't retain default settings with Win 10, and has to be manually reset in the Delta's control panel to 48k/Hz after shutting down SONAR Producer X3 set up to record at 24/96. Sound Forge Pro 10 seems to always stay at the last clock setting used as well
I have no idea if this condition exists with S Plat, but if I hook up my Focusrite 18i20 to the X3 machine everything works as usual.
However that is the only problem I have ever had with the Delta 1010 since the dayz of old, and I'm talking about Windows 98 SE old, it's been a GREAT sounding rock solid performer and shows no sign of wear or slowing down or quitting. I only wish I could say the same about M-Audio interfaces post Avid appropriation, I've had a couple of their USB interfaces crap out and channels die, and going to Avid for support is tedious at best to absolutely none

Such is the problem with using older equipment/peripherals with newer technology, 3rd party vendors don't have much incentive to support older products, but at least Windows users don't get orphaned nearly as much as Mac users. do.
And that's exactly why I completely jumped the Mac/Pro Tools ship over a decade ago, and always shy away from proprietary hardware designed for specific software.

That being said, as much as I really, really liked Windows 7 Ultimate, I can honestly say after closing in on a year I really, REALLY like Windows 10 Pro much more better despite these annoyances which are all pretty much behind me, all my machines run a bit better and faster, they sound a bit better with the same audio card/interfaces, SONAR Platinum definitely runs better and uses less computer resources than it did with v7 and graphics are noticeably a bit better as well as all across the board bench testing.
My AMD FirePro V5900 accelerated graphics card seems to have an ENORMOUS BOOST in speed and brute horsepower with Win 10 with Vegas Pro 11.

And NO, there are absolutely no signs what so ever that Microsoft is spying on me or trying to take over my computer to get it to turn on me or involved in any government world power conspiracy theories.
All telemetry reporting back to the "Mothership" is used for improving performance, fixing and improving things, and I have complete control when my computer gets updated.

There IS NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself.... Err well, most likely Hillary Clinton and most definitely Donald Trump, but you can rest assured your computer and or any version of Windows isn't going to go all political on you.
And if you find your computer is misleading you, know this.....  ""!!IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!!""

Seriously everyone, I can understand not upgrading because you can't afford the risk of upgrading certain hardware devices at the moment, but sooner or later you WILL be upgrading, and it's not going to be any easier or less painless, nor you won't save any money by letting a free upgrade slip through your fingers when EVERYBODY stops supporting Win 7.

And for anyone still using XP or even a 32 bit version OS, WOWZER are YOU ever in for a SUPRIZE!
