I have used Linux for over 10 years for other things and it is a solid OS, but if I was serious about audio and wanted to change from Windows, I would probably bite the bullet and switch to a Mac.

I dunno, everyone loves to poop on Microsoft but my experience with Windows 10 has been great. I certainly would say I've gotten my money's worth, having bought W8 when I built my PC and upgrading to w10 for free. As long as charges were reasonable I would probably be OK with it.

All that "articles"... MS has "site licenses" with yearly fee for long time. They have subscription versions of Office. And I guess they are moving forward, so introduce new forms of subscriptions. But I do not remember (correct me if I am wrong) they ever had subscription ONLY versions of something. It was always possible to buy everything "once" (I am not talking about the price, but about a possibility). Windows 7-8 will be "out of service" relatively soon, that is not a solution. Changing to Apple is like moving from one prison to another. With MS you can at least choose the room, with Apple you can not. Cockos was releasing Linux versions of REAPER all the time. But they was "just for test". They have many Linux port fixes recently, have made Linux board in the forum and "promoted" the download to the main page (still as "Evaluation"). I guess REAPER 6 will officially support Linux. Also note REAPER is long time Linux+Wine friendly. Tracktion has official Linux version for all products (but my experience with it was not good). Bitwig has official Linux version. Steinberg officially mention Linux is recent VST SDK. Many VSTs are developed with JUCE, that means they can be compiled for Linux in no time (without extra development cost), if producers consider to do that. So, if Cockos can release own (== well written) bridge to run windows plug-ins (current bridges are not perfect) and RME (Motu or some other player) can release Linux drivers, much more people can switch completely. Note that "conservative" design of Linux (thanks to embedded and server solutions based on it) is perfect for "install once - run forever" approach. Desktop platforms (MS,Apple) tend to change the rules all the time to sell new products. Good for toys, one season clothes and may be for mobile phones. Somehow stupid for "hardware like" music workstations.

There's nothing in that article that's "panic worthy". I have a subscription to MS Office 365. With tax, it's $7.51 a month. You can still purchase a standard license for MS Office. Sometimes a subscription type plan makes sense... other times it doesn't. ie: I use Photoshop, Premier Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, and Audition. To purchase a bundle license for those programs (and to keep it up-to-date) would cost a lot more than the $50/month Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Apple may ultimately go the monthly subscription route. They already offer monthly services (Apple Music, iCloud Storage, etc). The downside to a subscription is that you don't own the license. If you stop paying for the subscription, the application will no longer function. Most subscriptions have an option to pay yearly. At that point, the line is getting blurry. As long as monthly subscription costs the same (or less) as a normal license, I don't have a problem.

azslow3 Windows 7-8 will be "out of service" relatively soon
Not available, but not unsupported - I don't believe corporate customers would stand for that. My last gig (as a software engineer) was with a fortune 250 company. I retired a little over four years ago and we had just switched to Win 7 maybe a year before that. Upgrading to a new OS costs mega bucks when a company has tens of thousands of machines to upgrade. It's not the software cost, it's testing every friggin' application that all the employees rely upon. This is *very* expensive. I would be surprised if Win 7 is taken off MS support sooner than three years from now at the earliest. I should be seeing a few of my former colleagues sometime in Sept. and will learn where they are currently are with respect to upgrading from Win 7. I am extremely interested to find this out. Both my home machines are Win 7 and I have absolutely no desire to move to a "better" OS.

I switched to Linux as the primary OS on my DAW a couple of months ago. I set it up as dual boot Xubuntu/Win7 with the idea that Win7 extended support officially ends in January of 2020, and just like XP I expect that M$ will follow through and stop supporting it on the day they say they will. Anyway, my plan has long been to dual boot, and eventually take Win7 totally offline, and use the Linux side to do everything except music and video production. Since moving to Linux, I also started playing around with REAPER for Linux, just for kicks. To my surprise, the Linux version is more usable than I expected, although the Windows version is still more efficient and is more compatible with VST/VSTi plugins. That said, I'm using the Linux version of REAPER on a song I'm working on currently, and may eventually move it to the Windows side of the house to finish it up if I need some plugins I haven't got working in Linux. Here's a screenshot with some of what I have working in Linux right now.

I agree with dmbaer on the high cost of upgrading for many corporations. I'm a retired Regional LAN/WAN Network and Hardware Help Desk Manager. Along with upgrading software, hardware, in many cases, will also have to be upgraded. Training is a major expense. But ultimately all will update at some point. I worked for a US Federal Government Agency and they got special Microsoft on site support and a support extension ($$$) for their "NT 4.01" systems but the extension really gave them a chance to evaluate and integrate an upgraded OS and upgraded/compatible application software. Back to Win 10 and possible subscriptions. I'm also in the Windows "insider" program and get advanced versions of Win 10 Pro. So far everything that I need, such as Sonar, iLok, etc all work on the insider versions. If they keep that program I won't really need the $$ version.

any OS maker has to keep it's customers happy.. and it's company it supplies , e.g. a pc maker. I've bought a pc in the past with no OS loaded on it for example. I'm not a fan of the subs model, as having such things taking money out of your account seems "easier" way to get your money / less painful.. much as using a card vs paying cash. if I get ill or things change etc and can't use the software .. then taking a small chunk out from my bank account , isn't helping. if more companies supported linux, I'd have switched years ago.. but well pc and mac are the mainstay. I don't mind paying for an OS with the machine or outright, but not ongoing.

I didn't realize those could be used as a DAW interface. Cool units for sure, and they had a used one recently at the GC near me. I assumed it was only for live so you could walk around a venue with an iPad to do the mixing, and not be tethered to a physical board. Still, the $250 price tag of the UMC1820 makes me think I'll probably show up at GC one day with a couple of things I don't need any longer, and get one for more like $100 after trade-in. That said, my pair of ancient M-Audio Delta 2496 cards ain't really broke, and both Windows and Linux are totally happy with them. The primary reason I am toying with the idea of getting a multi-mic interface is that I started recording acoustic drums recently using both of the M-Audio cards at once. They are sync'd over S/PDIF, but I have found that the start times for recording are not sample accurate, and even though they are using the same clock, with no drift there, the moment they start recording is not identical, and I end up having to slide two of the four tracks of drums around due to phasing that kills the punch. Now that I have identified why my four channel recordings have varying amounts of offset, I spot check and correct every time right after recording, but it's a step I would like to eventually eliminate.

Has most of the features of the X32. I think I got mine closer to the $400 mark (bought the display model). I got it to use for band rehearsals. Works perfectly for that. Figured if we wanted to record (simultaneously), it would make that process quick/easy.
