Windows 10 - controlling Windows Updates
Hi, I just upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. It went pretty smoothly (knock on wood), and I just have a quick question about how you guys are handling Windows Updates. I used the registry method (I'll show you at the end of the post) to tell it to notify me before downloading and installig (just like I've always done in previous versions of Windows). My question is - Does this actually work? And where will these notices appear? Do they show up at login like windows 8 & 8.1? Or in the "Action Center" notifications? I enabled the "Action Center" icon in my taskbar  And set app notifications. Do I need to enable "show me tips about Windows"?  Basically - I got my info here: http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/ and used the reg file to set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU AUOptions = 2 I can just wait to see what happens, and my "non music" partition should warn me before rebooting (so I'll know if there are some updates) - but I just thought I'd ask those of you who have been using Windows 10 for a while. This does indeed work but you may want to reboot after making the registry change. It's not required but otherwise you have to wait till win10 reads the registry again for the setting to take effect.
I would also suggest that you look up how to setup win10 not to automatically update drivers. This may save you hassles later but you will also need to update drivers manually.

Thanks Tom - I'll look up about the drivers. I'll just wait and see what happens with updates.
Should I expect Windows notifications? (up at the top right of the screen now)

THe little icon for updates turns white on my computer when updates are ready. You should also get a little reminder that says "you need some updates". You can then go to the action center and look at pending updates. Once you click on them you will DL and install them in one action.

For the love of everything, DONT turn windows tips on. I'm still on Win 10 home which it's enabled by default, and I found out the hard way in a recording session that it was causing my external USB 3.0 disk to hang, and audio drop outs. I found an answer online and I turned it off, and low and behold, I could record again!
I had it on and I did a sample recording to 8 tracks, and just let it run and I viewed the disk performance icon in Sonar and it would start out at 2%, jump up to 60% before pegging the hard drive at 100% and then the audio engine stopped. Once I turned off windows tips, it never got above 2% usage.
Very strange behavior, but spread the word to any one on Win 10.
Other than that little snafu, Win 10 in my experience is Microsoft's best OS yet.

OK Thanks denver - I'll turn that back off. I'll look some more to see if I'm actually going to get notifications for updates or not. EDIT: notifications are working now, on my programs partition (it got a little screwed up when it tried to install the same update a second time). It tells me when it's updated and when it needs a reboot. The music partition has the registry "hack" so it's supposed to tell me when to download updates - so we'll see if that works. Otherwise I'll run it manually when I know there's an update (from the other partition) - so it's looking pretty good now ;-)

It makes no difference what you want Windows to do, Windows will do what it wants to do. There has been a lot of talk about what Windows is sending back to the mother ship at Redmond. A recent traffic analysis of the Enterprise version of Windows 10 shows that it is sending an awful lot back, regardless of what you tell it. A user set up his firewall to capture everything sent out, after setting up just Windows Enterprise 10 and nothing else, as well as turning off everything that was available. His firewall captured Windows making around 4,000 connection attempts to 93 different IP addresses during an 8 hour period, with most of those IPs controlled by Microsoft. The reason this is important is that it was the Enterprise version, where the user (typically a company) is supposed to be able to have complete control of their system. From a business standpoint, stability and security is important, and in some companies is it legally required (think healthcare and HIPAA in the US). If the Enterprise version is doing this, can you imagine what the Home and Pro versions are doing? That is why I disconnected my Windows machine from the 'net once it was set up. I use Linux Mint to interface with the web now. It has become my main workhorse. The posting on the network telemetry analysis can be found at https://voat.co/v/technology/comments/835741.
