Windows 10 update today... trouble. KB3093266

I had a notice today that I needed to schedule a re-start, I went ahead and re-started. After that Start Menu would not work and gave me a "Critical Error" message, that I need to log out and they would try to fix it when I logged back in... NOT. Action Center also would not open. I don't know what else wasn't working. I found the update: KB3093266 and uninstalled it, still not working.
Thankfully Control Panel still worked and I was able to do a System Restore to 9/23/15, then I ran Malwarebytes. Things seem OK now.
So, I am not certain that the update was the culprit. I had been on FB a little bit too but that usually only makes me mad, it doesn't break my computer.
So beware. Be sure you have a restore point just in case. I know if you run CCCleaner, you likely will lose your restore points, so beware.
It took several hours for all this, the sys restore took forever.
 
Anyway... I hope it was just my computer.

I installed that update this morning with no problems whatsoever. Sorry for yours.

I noticed yesterday that mine was scheduled to be installed overnight...
I let it....and it's working fine.  Don't know what happened on your
end J, but I've sure been there before...so I feel your pain...

I almost reverted back to Win 8.1 last night, but this was because my built in Broadcom Network Adapter doesn't work with Win 10 (continuous internet dropouts no matter which driver I used...older, newer etc...). Since I've passed the 30 day window to revert from Win 10 to Win 8.1, I'll have to find the original Win 8 install disk/serial.
 
I unplugged my Ethernet cable from my ASUS RT-AC66U router and plugged it directly into my PC......was able to get internet connection for 10 min and then it dropped again (before I wasn't getting any connection). I'm looking to get a new nic card (one that has drivers for Win 10).....uggghhh.   

I have had exactly the same issue with broadcom (internal NIC). I found that the broadcom driver for Windows 8 worked better (on broadcoms site) than the one supplied for Windows 10.

That looks like it. There should be documentation included. Normally the folder gets extracted then you point to the driver in device manager/update drivers using browse..

Also take note of the roll back driver option in case it goes wrong.. Backup etc..

Been there & done that....IIRC the rollback driver is dated Jan/2013 and the Windows "Best Driver Available" is from July/2013. Both get dropouts and/or no connection.

I still want to know if it was available on the slow ring or not, because if it wasn't then you all know what to do if you want to avoid this sort of thing.

Are you on the slow ring in windows update advanced settings?

What's that? It tells me I need to re-boot then suggests a good time. I usually reboot myself before that time. Don't know what the slow ring is. My internet is pretty fast, Comcast.

I tried using the Browse function, but Windows stated: "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date". 

You hit the wrong button. Try a different one.. Would give you the exact combination nowhere near windows right now...

The Slow/Fast for updates is only for the Preview versions.  My "full" Win 10 installations do not have that. 
BTW, that KB was installed in my system and no problems.

I have to agree, the "free" upgrade bricked one of my desktop systems into the infinite restart loop from he!! and none of the recovery options have resolved the problem. And, it keeps coming back like a zombie in a cheap horror flick. I've uninstalled the update, opted out, etc. etc. and it just keeps trying. I'm going to have to do a full reinstall of Win 8.1 to get rid of it I'm sure.

I found this:
Press Windows key + Pause/Break from the Desktop.

• Click on the Advanced system settings from the left pane.
  
• Click on Hardware tab and click on Device Installation Settings.
  
• Check mark on the No, Let me choose what to do option.
  
• Check mark on the Never install driver software from Windows update option.
  
• Check on Save Changes.
  

I used it and re-installed and had no trouble. I don't know if it helped or if things just worked right this time.... nor do I know if it is a good idea to leave the settings like this. I think there is something to be said for, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"... but what do I know? Not much, I'm not Gary but..."I do love to turn knobs... I think it is a way I can create!
 
Let me know if you think I should change this option back, I'm sure most people here know a LOT more about computers and OS than I do. Thanks for the help!

You are right, I had to dig a bit deeper (Browse/Have Disk etc...) to install the latest driver. Sadly, it also only works temporarily....(drops out anywhere after 15 - 45 minutes). I'm getting a new NIC card this week. (Sorry Jbow for hijacking your thread).

Have you installed your new NIC yet? What did you get and how is it working?

Generally it's best to buy a PCI card for the desktop so it does not flood the USB bus where your audio interface may be plugged in (FireWire users and PCI audio card users don't have to worry).

Of course with a laptop no choice. Word of warning then, if you use a USB adapter you may need to disable it whilst recording.
