Windows 10 - who's going to upgrade straight away?
As the title asks. Who's going to upgrade immediately Anybody care to comment on the lower latency that Win 10 claims to provide.

I'm not going to do anything to slow down the update. It'll come when it comes. Will there be issues? Sure. If I wait for 11 months, will there still be issues? Sure. If I wait more than 12 months? No longer free. So I'm going to cry now.

I'll delay it for awhile (I run Windows Update manually to avoid background overhead while doing audio stuff) because Focusrite has yet to pronounce the Saffire Pro40 driver as safe for Win10. I also have some other critical software that I can't live without, such as a 3rd party VM that I run XP in. I'll most likely update my laptop first and see how that goes.

Nothing. That's what I've seen so far. I have 3 machines that I signed up for the update, all have now lost the win update icon and none of them shows any signs of win 10 or the update. What a let down.

I was not part of the preview testing group, but had the Win10 files d/l'd and have upgraded. Took a little over an hour. I started mine manually via Windows Update. Try that.

In my understanding the improvement in latency only applies to non- asio drivers. Has anyone heard differently?

I won't install it soon. It has already told me that my Paragon backup and recovery won't work with it. I'll wait until Paragon fixes that. I'm sure there will be other issues that come up for a while.

Obviously any drivers, windows or ASIO will have to be rewritten to take advantage of any new architecture or APIs.

Not working any more and not taking any projects at the moment I'm going to give Win 10 a go. I've got a complete image of my hard drive.
I'll try the upgrade first and see how it goes and if it runs OK I'll do a fresh install.

FYI from Steinberg Hello all,
We will release an official announcement later today but our tests have shown performance and timing issues with Cubase, Nuendo and Sequel on Windows 10 (build 10240) systems. Also, the latest Quicktime 7.7.7 cannot be installed on a Windows 10 system which basically removes the video support in Cubase and Nuendo. While these issues did not occur on all systems we tested with, we can only recommend to wait.
In addition, the Yamaha Steinberg USB and Firewire drivers also show issues with sample rate switches and thus are not fully compatible either.
More information will follow as soon as we know more.

It's a little frightening that Steinberg found so many problems with W10. I'd hoped that it would be a smoother fit with existing hardware and software, as going from Win7 to Win8 was. I know that nearly all of the preview builds had audio-related issues, such as no audio after an update and drivers that hung on install. Problems have been reported related to integrated audio drivers, external audio interfaces and audio-related software such as Spotify. I am also a little concerned about the new mandatory updates. Just before the RTM went out, an update was automatically pushed out to Win10 beta users that crashed Windows Explorer and therefore could not be rolled back. This is some scary sh|t. You'll never know when you'll come in to the office/studio to find a non-functioning computer waiting for you.

I jumped on board just long enough to realize that there's no place like home. The roll back option for win 7 users is fast. About 12 minutes and I'm back to Win 7 and again have usable outboard gear.

I upgraded yesterday. I had a couple of issues that were deal killers and I was prepared to go back to Win 7 with an image file. I had sounds in Sonar Platinum but no Windows sounds. That was fixed with new drivers and software for my audio interface, RME Hammerfall Multiface II. RME posted updates just days ago. MP3, Wav, MP4 files would not play. They were set to play in Microsoft's cloud player which would not play local files. Searched for Default Programs and set them all back to Media Player. Some are worried about Win 10 phone home and privacy issues. During initial startup, if you select Custom Settings (little tiny link....look close) you can turn all of that off. Now I like it. I am an IT professional by day job and I never upgrade an O/S until service pack 1. This time I am making an exception. I am impressed after solving my 2 issues. I am keeping Win 10. Garrett Morris even said in an interview "Win 10 been belli, belli good to me." ☺

Did the upgrade today from an ISO image burned to DVD. Quickest ever. Completely hassle free.
So far only my Alphatrack has stopped working but all else is OK but obviously have to spend a good bit more time. Will test for August and if all OK still then I will do a fresh install. Although I'll see how it shakes out.

I performed an upgrade from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 10 x64. No problems encountered during the install. All my apps show up, and my desktop looks exactly as I left it before I inserted the install media. I was most worried about the Echo Layla 3G audio drivers, so I immediately run Sonar Platinum x86 (32-bit) and open a recent project. Problem #1: No MIDI device selected. However, my MIDISPORT 2x2 is installed and all I needed to do was tell Sonar to use it. I think maybe Windows is iterating over the devices and the MidiSport was assigned a new ID or something? Anyway, after selecting it, it just worked as expected. Yay! Problem #2: on closing the project, I got a couple of errors: "ERROR: Couldn't save configuration file to: c:\program files (x86)\cakewalk\vstplugins\VB3.ini" "LFX-1310.con file can't be accessed" Both of these issues turned out to be permissions. The user account that I was running SONAR under no longer had permission to write to files under c:\program files (x86). This makes sense and I actually like it - except for some reason, VSTs like to write to their .ini files and keep them in the same directory as the DLLs. For folks who keep their VST plugin directory somewhere else, like, say, "c:\vstplugins", I wonder if this is an issue? Anyway. I marked the SONAR shortcut as "Run as Administrator" under Compatibility and the errors went away. So right now, I'm pretty happy. I can confirm that the following hardware Just Works: Echo Layla 3G (64 bit) Midisport 2x2 Midi interface

I upgraded to Win 10 Pro from 8.1 Pro yesterday and have had no issues (knock on wood). I was most concerned about the Audiobox USB audio interface drivers but they have been quite content to run under 10. So far I can confirm that Presonus Audiobox drivers, EWQL Play, NI Kontakt 5 and of course Sonar Pro (Gloucester) run just fine. One goody in Win10 -a screen recorder that can record stereo audio and video (WIN+G). I use VoiceMeeter to record ASIO audio.

Alas, I spoke too soon. I am getting pops and crackles on playback now. I hope this is something easy to fix. It seems to be related to the ASIO buffer size. At 256 samples it is very noisy. At 1024 it seems to have settled down - I heard one quiet "tick" in a 10 second playback. I normally run at 512 and it's been rock-solid and quiet. I may trying re-installing the audio driver... Update (the following day): I re-ran the install for the audio driver, and re-booted. Problem is no longer apparent. Seems rock-solid again. I have 9 problems but pops-n-crackles ain't one of them.

I have updated from Windows7 on an old (read i5 760M) 32bit Compaq. It has been fairly painless and apart from a few issues re registering third party software, Sonar seems to working as before the upgrade. I will be giving it a thorough workout before I go near my desktop though, and I'll be finishing a lot of projects too. There are always going to be hurdles to get over and hoops to jump through, especially since I skipped Windows8. But I can't stay on Win7 forever, and my computers are just getting older, so it's just a matter of when, not if.

Upgraded a couple of months ago within Insider program... Had no any problems with my MOTU 828mk3, Cubase, Rapture, FL Studio or lots of any other stuff I'm using in my music studio. Latency looks the same as I had with Windows 8.
