Windows 64 bit & Sonar - Drivers

Hello-
I just got an AMD 64 X2 4400 cpu and intend to run sonar 5 on it....I want to install Windows 64 bit edition to take advantage of the new CPU's 64 bit capabilites.
I run a MOTU 828 MKII as my sound card, but I can't find anything about 64bit drivers for the 828. Is this an issue? will the 828 still work on windows xp 64 ?
thanks

No, you need to install XP32 or win 2000 and use the current drivers. MOTU is being very evasive about this driver thing. Basically they dont have 64bit drivers now, 32 bit drivers wont work in 64bit environments. THey wont give an ETA for 64 bit drivers. Good Luck though. My K8NS just got delivered at my work, but I cant go play with it until I get home from New Orleans.

Sonar 7.0.3, Mattel Synsonics, Motu 828MKII (BLA), TC-powercore, Stillwell plugins, Moog MG1, Korg Poly 800, DX27s, Moogerfooger Lowpass, Ovation Magnum, Stingray fretless, Mesa Bass 400, Waldorf Edition, DBA fuzz war, Summit 2BA221, etc

Mark Of The Unicorn is primarily a Mac shop; Windows takes a backseat over there. When they do release drivers for XP64, they'll probabvly be solid but it'll be a while.

Unless you want to use more than 4GB RAM, you're not losing out on anything by running XP32

    thanks everyone for the help....

Zlartibartfast: I have 4GB ram right now....with no plans to upgrade. but I don't understand, I thought 64bit CPUs had more to offer than just more ram capacity right? isn't 64bit faster because the CPU can handle a 64bit instruction per cycle as opposed to 32? wouldn't that afford a performance increase?
    thanks

In theory, 64 bit can offer greater bandwidth than 32, but at this stage of development the only noticeable advantage is addressing more RAM. Your FSB clock is more important than your CPU clock anyway, so I'd say go with 32 for stablilty's sake. DAW users are often left waiting in the wings when the Next Big Thing comes out, like in the form of drivers for "exotic" audio adapters.

I'm still running W2K, 2GB RAM and guess what - It WORKS!

Zlartibartfast: thanks for the info. So I just got an Asus A8N SLI with the AMD dual core. ... do you think I will notice much difference in performance over my old Athlon 3000+ ?? the dual core part is what seems like it would do it, seeing as how sonar supports it. I also got some of those western digital raptor drives, hopefully this helps. because I have been hitting walls with sonar, getting the dropouts and all that from too many effects and such.

the dual-core CPU should be a great advantage; just be sure you get the MS hotfix for the multiprocessor HAL (I think Paul Russell posted on this). If you are overloading the Athlon X2, then you have a software problem - definitely not hardware
