Windows 7 64bit. midi frustrations. virtual midi keyboard.

I do not have a "real" midi keyboard. A good one that isn't a tiny little toy isn't in my budget. On XP I was able to use virtual midi keyboard and midi yoke without any problems. I am beginning to feel like I have wasted my time and money. I want creation not frustration.  If there is no way to make things work correctly and creatively without a "real" midi keyboard I will give up and wait until It is is in my budget.

It is certainly easier to use a real physical keyboard but i think there is a way to use the keyboard on your computer i will have to check it out or maybe someone else can tell you if it is possible or not.
what version of sonar are you using?

Have you done any experimenting with the piano roll view and drawing in notes, or if you are more traditional you could use the staff view to enter notes as well. i know this works in HS7 but i would think it is also featured in other version.

Which Cakewalk program are you using?
Is the Cakewalk program you're using 64-bit compatible?
Is the virtual keyboard program you want to use 64-bit compatible?

IMO any MIDI-controller keyboard, no matter how small, is about 100 times faster and more fluent to work with than any virtual keyboard OR your computer keyboard.

I suggest you get whatever you can afford, aim at a simple controller with no extra whistles, be it 1,5 octaves or whatever. Use it while putting money aside for a better one. I'm sure you can get one second hand under 50 dollars.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

In xp sp3 combatibility mode "virtual midi keyboard" works fine.  Midi-yoke also isn't a problem with any other daw. I am running Home Studio 7 with the update in compatibility mode. My system is newly built: MSI motherboard, 2.3 ghz dual-core AMD, 2gb DDR2 ram, OS and programs on 1 7200 rpm SATA. Pagefile, plugins, samples, audio files on a 2nd 7200 rpm SATA. Windows is tweaked for best performance also.
As far as midi keyboards- 49 full size keys is fine. Not interested in the mini key types like Korg Nano.

Ok you can not use the computer keyboard in sonar.
I agree with Kalle get something like an Akai mpk mini it has good reviews.
Check e-bay, something is better than nothing.
