Windows 7 Aero help please :-)

I'm running Windows 7 64bit and I'm using the 'Aero' settings.

There are a couple of features which annoy me immensely, and I don't know if it's possible to turn them off, and if so, how.

  • PITA #1:
Automatic resizing of 'restored' windows. For example, when I'm resizing a window and get too close to the top or bottom of the screen, the window will automatically 'snap' to fit all the available vertical space. I don't want this to happen, I want to size the window to the size I drag it to!
  • PITA #2:
If I move the mouse pointer down to the bottom of the screen so it's hovering over an open program, a little screen showing the UI of that program appears automatically. Worse still, if I nudge the mouse up a little to get rid of this annoyance, and the mouse happens to alight over this 'mini' screen view, the whole page then appears and fills the whole screen. I don't want any of this to happen!

Arrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Straummy needs to get a life/get out more.......

Hold the shift key down while moving the window...........

The second one is done through the visual effects settings I think. Type visual effects in the search box on the start bar, it's called aero peek.

I actually watched videos before upgrading (after having XP Pro for ten years) and I believe there IS a way to turn those "features" off.  I'll see if I can remember where and how for ya!

Ok, part 1 - turning "Snap" on or off video:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-do-I-turn-Snap-on-or-off

I could probably wait and put part 2 here as well, but that doesn't help increase my post count now, does it?

Here's just the directions:

To turn Snap on or off Open the Make the keyboard easier to use page by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Ease of Access, clicking Ease of Access Center, and then clicking Make the keyboard easier to use.
Under Explore all settings, click Make the mouse easier to use.
Under Make it easier to manage windows, do one of the following:
To turn Snap off, select the Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen check box.
To turn Snap on, clear the Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen check box.
Click OK.

Ok, got it.  I misread the directions the first time.  The "Make the keyboard easier to use" comment is incorrect.  Just go to Ease of Access, then to the "Make the mouse easier to use" then to the "Make it easier to manage windows" section and click on the Prevent... box!

Simples.

(Yeah, right.)

Now... What about part 2?

Part 2 ...  Apart from learning some mouse control (or putting the bar on the side like I do), here's one option:

  1. Click on Start button and type GPEdit.msc in Instant Search text box, then hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar in left pane of Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Locate and double click on Turn off taskbar thumbnails in right pane of Local Group Policy editor.
  4. Select Enabled radion button.
  5. Click OK to make the change effective.
  6. Logoff and logon again or restart computer if needed.
  7. To re-enable Taskbar preview feature in Windows 7, just set the value to Disabled or Not Configured.

  4. Select Enabled radion button.
  5. Click OK to make the change effective.
  6. Logoff and logon again or restart computer if needed.
  7. To re-enable Taskbar preview feature in Windows 7, just set the value to Disabled or Not Configured.

I can't get this to work though. If I type GPEdit.msc in the Search box I get "No items match your search". I even tried the registry edit they suggest but I'm still getting the pop-ips.

Thanks for your help Craig

I use both features - a lot, but I also have my taskbar on the right side of the screen so it doesn't take up much valuable screen real estate.  One of the biggest beefs I have with the PC world (and TV world) lately is their insistance on catering to the movie crowd.  I hate all of these wide and short monitors (and so-called "wide aspect" TV's).  If you use your PC for something other than watching movies (which I do 100% of the time), boring things like WORK, then you need more space up and down!   Plus I used to love my 3:4 aspect ratio big screen TV.  I don't think the wide ones look good at all.

For GPEdit.msc you have to go to the Run dialog (WinKey + R) and type it there.  Typing it on the Start Menu search does not work.

Craig, Ben, thanks guys.

Craig, I followed up your link and apparently, the GPEdit.msc only works in Win 7 Professional - I only have the Home Premium version.

However, I did find a little tweak to the registry that allows you to set how long the delay is between hovering the mouse pointer over a program and the thumbnail appearing. I've twatted it up to 100 seconds which is plenty long enough to stop it popping up annoyingly.

In fact, all I see now when I hover is a small text window showing the name of the program. And best of all, it disappears once you move the mouse away - no full screen previews anymore!
