Windows 7 and SOANR X1 helpful hints?
I'm builing my W7Pro 64bit machine and I was wondering what the helpful hints are WRT W7 tweaks and settings. So far everything seems to be working and I have not made any tweaks beyond setting the properties of the X1 shortcuts to "Run as Administrator". Anything else I should be doing in W7 for SONAR X1?

I haven't done any tweaks at all on Windows 7. Works fine.

If you run into issues there is some interesting MMCSS stuff you can do to prioritize what your machine does when running lean. It depends on the kind of driver you're using as I believe it has to be the newer WDM and not ASIO to work. Myself I have X1 set to run as administrator and have all networking devices turned off in Device Manager. It also helps to turn off disk indexing on your audio disk especially, and people tend to prefer turning Aero off. That's about it for me at the moment. Peace, Tunes

A Rain Recording Element PC with an SSD drive and 6GB RAM came tweaked for audio and video out of the box. You didn't have to do a thing. On the other hand, installing a retail version of Win 7 64-bit without tweaks will leave a lot to be desired as I proved to myself when I did it. Tweaks are definitely needed and I listed all of the tweaks I did to my system here which has proved useful to others. John

I tell a lie, actually, there is one I did, which was to change Power Management to High Performance.

First thing to do is disable the network connection. This prevent any internet access from getting in or out. Next, start shutting down all the running applications that are visible in the system tray like virus protection, OneNote (Office uses this), Ad-Aware, Spy-Bot, sync programs and anything else you see in the system tray. The next task is a little more problematic but can be the place where many performance stealing applications can be found. If you open up the "Task Manager" (pressing CTRL-SHIFT-ESC is the quickest way to summon it) select the "Processes" tab. For Windows 7 make sure to click the "Show processes from all users" button and for pre-Windows 7 check the box for the same. What you do here is read the description on the right for each process running. If it is a third-party product like "Adobe Acrotray" or "Adobe Flash Player" highlight it and click the "End Process" button and confirm to end the process. Don't stop any "svchost.exe", audio interface, video, MIDI or Microsoft OS processes. If you have any questions on what a specific process is look up the Image Name found on the left at http://www.processlibrary.com/. For example, if you search for " KHALMNPR.exe", which is a common Logitech process, you'll find this is a non-essential process and can be stopped since it is not involved in running the operating system. However, " winlogon.exe" should never be stopped because it is a system process. I don't even remember having to Run as Administrator, but it can't hurt. I also did the High Performance power setting tweak. Other than that, I agree Windows 7 is nothing like XP in this regard, and so far for me, all those Black Viper-kind of tweaks are not needed. No longer do I wonder about what I might screw up. There was an interesting recent thread about another common tweak, setting priority to Background Services. Even though Noel Borthwick had said in SONAR 7 or so that he recommended we NOT do that tweak, to my knowledge, we have no definitive word on using it for X1.

Hey Bapu, I highly recommend 'Speed Fan' program to monitor heat, which caused me strange behavior, pops, clicks, strange audio behavior, crashes etc, until I got a handle on the HEAT. The program is available at http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php and is free. I sent the guy a few bucks because it worked so well and solved a problem! Also with the 64bit Win7 you lose a few 32bit plug-ins, but I think worth the increase in quality. Hope this helps.

I think I have seen it mentioned a number of times on different threads that with Win 7 DO NOT turn off the Aero off as it is a benefit under Win 7. Be careful when you are looking for system tweaks that they actually are related to Win 7 and not to XP. Many of the old XP tweaks can actually cause problems rather than improve operations in 7.

installing dim pro was a pain. since I wanted to make sure I had S8.5 on the machine as well, I installed S8, then S8.5, which included DimPro in those, but that was a mistake installing DimPro from the S8 disks. after installing I think I had to not only uninstall but delete all registry entries for dim pro then reinstall directly from the disk. so make sure you install directly from the X1 disks and do not install it from a previous sonar.

+1 for the Aero comment from lorneyb2. For me, W7 64 bits runs X1 64bits + various fixes no problems. For those "difficult" plugins I use jBridge. There are a few Services you can turn off if you don't need them - the Black Viper site is the fountain of knowledge here. Cheers, Jerry

Hi Bapu, I started a thread about this a while back and got some great advice. My system is running rock solid since doing all the tweaks mentioned in this thread. You'll have to download a few PDF's and do some reading but it's well worth the time and effort. Good luck! Bub
