Windows 7 to 8
Does anyone know which version (or all) of Windows 7 can be overlain by Windows 8? I'm getting a new computer and would just as soon not have to reinstall all my programs twice.

you will not want 8 so dont worry about it but any would be the answer..
also not the correct way either.. fresh install is always desired

I agree, I'm not impressed with Win 8. I've had several beta versions, including the current "consumer preview" version and its not for me.
I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes another Microsoft OS flop, like Win ME, Vista, etc.

None of my content creation software lists Windows 8 as being a supported OS currently.
I'm seeing a lot of posts lately on various forums with people complaing about their applications failing on Windows 8. It's not even been officially released yet.
I ask what the compelling reason is to adopt the new OS and most don't have anything other than because it's new.
It's really important when you've spent a lot of time getting a 'system' working rather than just a computer with some software on it to consider fully the implications of upgrading and whether indeed there is any benefit in doing so.
Let the early adopters have all the headaches in their quest for the latest. W7 had matured well into SP1 before I migrated from XP and by then it was a fairly easy transition.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it, it can cause all manner of premature aging.

Let the early adopters have all the headaches in their quest for the latest. W7 had matured well into SP1 before I migrated from XP and by then it was a fairly easy transition. Unless you like testing, I'd sit out the first several months and let the updates (OS/drivers/patches) resolve initial issues. I'd approach every new OS release this way... As Jonbouy said, it will spare needless hair-loss.

agreed, on the other hand win7 was the first and only OS i sold from day of release.. all others i waited a good long while

I will go for win 7 and it is really good one. I don't say that experiments is good if you don't plan to install it soon.

Although I don't plan on converting my "production" systems to Win 8, I'll get the $39 copy and install it on a "test" system. I do some PC support and I know at least one of my clients is planning on updating. I'll have a copy for support purposes.
