EVERY version of Windows has things that need to be disabled for decent audio production, even 98 and 2000.

I am not a big fan of touchscreen tech for a laptop or desktop. I'd never be able to sit for hours with my arms extended. My back will not allow that.. I am glad it can all still be done with a keyboard or mouse but I guess for certain things reaching up to the screen might be OK. I wonder how X2 or X3 will change to use these new directions. I would like it if I can hook up an ASUS Transformer or XOOM tablet to the computer and use it as a touchscreen controller... and of course a touch DAW controller, small and on the table or lap for the tablet and large and in front for the display. I looks like the PC is going to evolve into a powerful tablet platform. We may as well embrace it... because it is coming. J

I doubt I will ever use a win8 or android type of system for an outboard midi sound engine, like the things we are seeing from IK multimedia. I would be interested in something portable and touch screen that I could work on Sonar mixes with when I'm not at home. Then maybe dump my work or transfere it to my desktop DAW. I can really see a use for that.

kc2ine are we getting closer and closer to Apple OS with those new Windows OSes No. Nothing like. This is the thing with Microsoft; they are at their weakest when trying to copy Apple, because they just don't get what Apple do, on a very fundamental level. They always do better when they forget about that and just do their own thing. You'll note that iOS, Apple's touchscreen OS, is nothing much like Mac OS. And you'll also note that Mac OS isn't particularly moving in a touchscreen direction; instead, they have genstures and touch controls on mice and track pads. Apple grapsed that the tablet form factor didn't just imply an input layer, but entirely different patterns of usage and therefore an entirely different design. Microsoft still don't get this, despite watching Apple hand them their asses over the tablet computing thing. So the problem with Windows 8 for me so far is that it's just a touch layer whacked on top of a fundamentally mouse and keyboard design. I mean, it hilariously still has hover-over tool tips in the touch mode. How exactly does one "hover" on a touch screen? I can't imagine doing anything with the touch control layer other than switching it off.

This guy says that Windows 8 is built on HTML5 and javascript and they are headed to the cloud. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTmInblmXWI I am not really sure what the implications are. I care nothing about my windows UI looking good. The first thing I did with W7 was to set for best performance. My desktop is just a blue screen with icons. Of course I disabled "sounds". I hope Windows 8 actually performs better. If they put everything into "looks" it will just be a PITA, at least for me. It seems to me that things are headed into less privacy and less security bt I could be wrong. I do like USB-3, it should revoutionize the audio interface with the low latency we have now using the latest drivers (like with the Octa-Capture) USB-3 should really be something... still that really doesn't have anything to do with Windows 8. If increased performance and enhanced security does not come along with a tablet type UI, then it will just be more stuff to disable or work around. Maybe one day they will offer a performance version of Windows and an entertainment version. One geared to work and the other to play... that would be nice. Oh well, I guess time will tell.

Windows 8 is primitive compared to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BnLbv6QYcA Love it!!! I emailed that to me daughter who used Gaarbageband and an i-Mac. Actually she records some decent songs just using her internal mics and GB. No good mastering but good enough demos. I am proud of her She was a sucessful DnB DJ in Atlanta about 8 or 9 years ago. She went by B:rok and had a vinyl release on 404Audio. She is now doing singer/songwriter stuff andis, I think, quite talented. She lives in Germany now and will get a kick out of that new Mac... 45 minutes on an email. Everything is a few hundred clicks away... laff. Thanks, I needed the laugh today. Julien

The copy process stuff is cool. I like that a lot actually. I'm also not a big fan of touchscreen technology on Desktops or Laptops. It's hard to see the mass appeal of that. It makes a lot more sense for the smaller devices. But since it's optional, no problem. I must say I'm not impressed by the new UI either.. It looks kind of annoying actually. That being said, I'm sure I'll get used to it as I will likely have no choice. Or maybe there will be a classic desktop?

You know, Win 7 64bit is running great for me. I see no need to move to 8.

I fail to see how bigger and more annoying icons (closer together not as easy to distinguish) will improve my desktop user experience. The copy thing looks great, but I agree, touch stuff is great for tablets etc. I hope Windows 8 doesn't force you to use that annoying looking GUI

Way back in the days of Win95 (perhaps it was even as far back Win 3.x) a development team could rewrite the Windows 'shell' - similar to what Apple has done with Unix and their UI (OS X). I could probably go along with Win 8 for my normal everyday stuff but from what I have seen of Win 8 sneak peaks I don't think I'd care for that for my DAW. However it might be totally awesome for a dedicated DAW to have it's shell reprogrammed by the software vendor so that their DAW was all I saw when I booted up. This kind of implies a multi boot system with each vendor providing there own shell. Just a thought, regards.

I see some don't understand the idea of touch screen tablets. They are not supposed to replaced desktops or laptops, not at all but for instance they can replace to some extend a book, or a map providing same experience when we used to with paper books or maps. You keep the book the same way as tablet don't you? You touch the pages to flip them over don't you? many other examples where touch screen tablets are more convenient. What about drawing? same as drawing on a paper with a pencil, or hen travelling in airplain coach class and ther is no space to open laptop...etc etc. I have both laptop and tablet and they both are great because serve different purposes.

You may be talking about people in general, but I don't think anyone here doesn't understand that. Everything you mention are the logical applications of the technology that actually make sense and I can't see how anyone would disagree. I think the main thing that some people worry about is the UI design of a Desktop OS potentially conforming more for touch-screen than standard mouse and keyboard.
