Windows 8.1 upgrade successful

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 this morning and had relatively few problems.

I ran the Sonar X3 demo with all the tracks enabled and the mix-down track muted.

Seems to be OK so far, but I have lots more things to test.

I will upgrade over the weekend. I read a review that they have brought back the start button. Does it mean that Classic Shell and other start button apps are not required anymore? I would love to remove classic shell if it's not required at all. It's takes only 5MB of RAM so I am not gonna get any boost but I would like to keep the system as lean as possible. I installed it just for the taskbar and start button.

What soundcard are you using with it?

When I looked there we're no 8.1 drivers for my UA-101. I've seen other folks saying their soundcards have stopped working.

good news. what version of win were you upgrading from?

i upgraded my internet laptop, running the win 8.1 preview, only to find that all my programs have to be reinstalled. not a big deal, as i only have a few that i really need, but no warning, just gone. (the programs are still on the hard drive, to be clear, and in some cases i have the installers, but win 8.1 doesn't know them.)

my music pc is running win 8. to reinstall everything on that one would be not fun. hopefully win 8 -> 8.1 keeps your programs intact. anybody know?

for now, that pc stays on win 8.

Aren't the system requirements for 8.1 the same as 8.0? I thought I read that somewhere.

I was upgrading from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center.
My soundcard is a Firewire Saffire Pro 14. I updated it to the Mixcontrol 3.3 firmware before the upgrade. I also updated my WiFi interface.

Two things did not work for me: PerfectDisk 12.5 (a superb disk defragmenter) and Acronis 2013.
I was able to image and restore using Acronis 2013, but it would not mount the image as a drive - a feature I found useful.
So I bought the Acronis 2014 update. It was a very smooth install, unlike the previous few Acronis updates.
Perfect Disk is due out October 1 - so they are running quite late.

I also had a bit of trouble with the Documents folder - I 'Locate' it to J: and it ran into some problems.
I think I have these troubles fixed now, but there are lots more things to test.

I didn't have any trouble with Live or Reaktor either so far.

I did the 8.1 Pro upgrade yesterday.  Sonar X3b and all my hardware are working OK, as far as I can tell.  I haven't done any recordings but I did do a playback from a previously recorded project and it all worked OK including the various plug-ins.

I did get an error message after rebooting with the Logitech Upgrader dll (LogiLDA.Dll).  Installing the latest Logitech Setpoint software fixed that.  From what I see doing a google search on that error and postings on the Windows 8 forum, I wasn't the only one that had this problem.

I started the download before I went to bed last night.
I had to go to work this morning so I didn't have time to mess with it.
Something is telling me that I shouldn't do it. That I'm going to spend my weekend troubleshooting my PC.
But it's like sitting in front of a big red button that you don't know what it does.
I don't think I can resist. I've got to push it

I've done 8.1 and it is okay apart from I can't verify my PC (in the Action Center). I also had to re-authorise the Addictive Drums.
The verification thing is doing my head in - I've had all sorts of Microsoft "assistance" but it all goes from bad to worse.
People criticise the support team here but it can't be anything like I've been through .

Thanks for pointing out the Addictive Drums issue.
I re-authorized my copy.

As for your verification problem - do you mean that you need to verify the 'Microsoft Account'?

If that is it you could try switching to a local account - that's all I use. I almost never visit the Start screen applications (except for 'Desktop').

The new 'classic shell' start button works great. Seems like it needs to be in the Startup program group to run now.

i saw one disheartening article that hinted it may be happening on machines that were upgraded "in-place," as my win 7 to win 8 upgrade was. i'm going to try to get ms support on the phone tomorrow. i'm far from ready to have to reinstall all my programs to do the upgrade.

Re: Windows 8.1 upgrade successful 2013/10/21 15:03:01 (permalink)
I have been thinking about this problem I encountered in the Windows 8.1 upgrade and I believe I know what happened, although I can't prove this.

Windows appears to have difficulty when you have multiple SATA drives. See this:

"Disk drive numbers may not correspond as expected to the SATA channel numbers when you install Windows on a computer that has multiple SATA or RAID disks"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937251

So if you have, for example, a  SATA SSD drive and another SATA drive for libraries, etc., be careful when you upgrade.

I have 6 SATA drives and my User Documents folder is on one of the non-boot drives, normally lettered 'J:'.

I think that when Windows 8.1 upgrade was going on, the J drive was enumerated differently so the old 'J:\My Documents' folder from Windows 8 was on some other drive letter.

Since Windows 8.1 could not find it, it made a reference to 'C:\Users\Jim\Documents' (the standard path) and just tacked on 'My Documents' (My Locate folder) to that pre-coded path when it was re-mapping registry settings.

Some of the new high powered motherboards have 12 or more SATA ports...

What's the benefit for upgrading to 8.1? Can anyone tell if it's improved compatibility with Sonar? Also did they address the firewire legacy driver issue?Debating whether or not to even bother.

I dunno what's happening under the bonnet of this, but not only is Win8 less of a pain in the arse to work with (booting to desktop, no more charms rubbish when pointing my mouse in th eupper right corner, feels solid and responsive and it seem to work better with all of my apps) but Sonar X3b is really feeling new as well! More responsive, more solid, quicker, faster, no glitching - yet...

To put it this way; I was thinking of abandoning the Windows platform, sell my DAWs and go full time Mac (perhaps with Windows on Bootcamp for Sonar use). After Windows 8.1 I'll stick with it and see how it goes. So far, EVERYTHING is much better.

I have been trying to get the update to download since it was released without success. Meanwhile 8 is working fine so its no rush.

I think the problems are related to my isp here in the Philippines.

Greetings, I've just built a custom machine running Windows 8.1 64-bit.  For those using an M-Audio Firewire 1814, are you having success using the Windows 7 64-bit (or SP1 version of the same) drivers on Windows 8.1 64-bit (because M-Audio hasn't released official Windows 8 drivers)?

My motherboard did not come with FireWire ports, so I will be heading out soon to buy a PCIe FireWire card to use my M-Audio FireWire 1814... hopefully.

Thanks!

JD

Hey, this is my first post and I'm dying to know how you got the Profire 610 to work with Windows 8.1. I have it connected to my PC and I installed the latest drivers for the Profire, but when I launch the software it says the hardware cannot be found. Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben
