Yup end of month... In other words they are renaming Windows 8.2 to Windows 9 in a rebranding exercise.

The journalist is a genius (not):
" A free upgrade for all would make sense, though, in that it would make it easier for Microsoft to entice as many of its users as possible to upgrade to the latest and greatest."
Stupid circular logic every way you look at it.
The only way I would see it being for pre Win 8 machines is if MS took a view they would be making money out of their metro app store and they feel they won't be making money out of OEM hardware any more. Unlikely but you never know...

I had major issues with the 8.1 update (crashed my system due to the graphics driver issues with th 8.1 automatic update), but Win 8 has been very stable for me. I'll (possibly) only upgrade to Win 9 after all the "gotta have it now" peeps test it out and give a positive review. I'm i no hurry to jump on aboard.

I think I have used every version of windows since version 1.0 back in the day. I bought a new PC that had windows 8 on it and it's the first time I actually cried in frustration using a computer. I was so distraught the next day I returned everything and bought a different machine that had win 7 Pro on it. GEWD I hated Win 8. I won't use it, no way no how. Windows 9?! haha yeah, um gunna be hard pressed to bring me back into the fold. I'll go Mac before I go to win 8 or 9.

The only other thing besides the Win video driver issue is I didn't care for Win 8 was the gui/app/metro thing......but it was an easy fix with Classic_Shell. Win 8 is basically just an updated Win 7, but had some unintuitive (IMO) extra junk attached to it. Once that stuff was eliminated, it has been very stable with all my hardware having excellent driver support for Win 8.

I honestly don't know what to think at this point as far as Windows goes ... last year I picked up a lap top w W 8 64 bit on it and it was a major shock OS wise for me … I couldn't bond with it on any level …it turns out I spent the whole year fighting this thing ... even had to use Beta drivers for my 2i4 …that was fun having to go there ….not then the kind folks on the X forum helped me configure my lap top … after going through all the layers of settings it took to get my lap top to do audio it seems to be OK now…. I'm afraid to even go with W 8 .1 at this point , i have no desire to jump through all those hoops again ... I'm still not bonding w this thing , I use it maybe only a couple of times a month ….. it is doubtful that I would even consider using 9 or what ever they will call it at this point …..I'm not feeling the love …. I much prefer the OSX environment , even on an older I mac , but I have all my money tied up in Windows DAWs and music aplications ... did I happen to mention ? I'm still not feeling the Love …. You who didn't get along well with Win 8 aren't alone ... it hasn't exactly been a rousing success. This next version will reportedly bring back some Win 7 features like the Start menu, in an effort to make life easier for those of us who'd rather not spend a lot of time re-learning how to do everything on our PCs. And yes, making the update free is a no-brainer if MS wants to keep its customers happy. I mean, we had to pay for Win 8, which many regret doing. This would be an attempt to patch things up, so to speak. And when's the last time Apple customers had to pay for an OS upgrade? We shall see if this rescues the Windows platform, or if Win 8 proves to be the point at which MS jumped the shark. Cheers, Eddie

Microsoft reportedly sold over 200 million copies of Windows 8. If they made just $10 per license on Win 8, that's $2 BILLION dollars. Makes no sense they would throw away the upgrade revenue from those users as well as everyone still on previous versions. I just don't see it...

I bought a new laptop around the time W8 came out. I opted to go with the still available W7 Pro. I did however buy W8 for £15 on the deal they done. The download is still sat on my hard drive. Call me a dinosaur but I'm so happy with W7 and the way it runs with my setup that I'm reluctant to upgrade for the sake of it. I know I'll have to one day but can W8 fans let me know what advantages if any it has over W7. I've only seen it and played with it a couple of times and my first impression was I wasn't impressed. I use a A&H ZED-R16 as my main interface so anyone with experience of W8 drivers for that would be most welcome. Thanks in advance. // //

Win8 is has better memory management, smaller foot print in memory and is overall a bit snappier performance wise. Since win8.1 I rarely see the, metro side. I thought I'd miss the start menu but in actuality I don't at all, though it will be nice to have it back with win9. Driver wise I'm still using the win7 driver for my delta 44. Dan

Exactly, a lot of the apps are rubbish, uninstall them, or if that is not possible hide them. A good example is the bulit in PDF reader, its horrible but its easy to replace with Acrobat or your favourite PDF reader. Apps, IMHO, do not work too well in the desk top environment, they are always full screen and require jestures to close or minimaise them. Programs on the otherhand act the same as they did in Win 7. I went with WIN 8 because I did not want to buy a discontinued OS. I use classic shell, but the start screen has some useful features that were not available with desktop, most of the annoying social media and news feed tiles can easliy be removed, shame it looks so ugly.

The metro side is for touch, and it works pretty well for that. I don't use my tablet that much, but it did replace a laptop. And of course 8.1 is easy to get to a "desktop" screen, tho a lot of internal functions no longer live there. The roll out was pretty backasswards. You should have had to migrate to the touch screen in 8.0, or better yet have the computer select if the screen is touchy. As it was, everybody w/o a touchscreen (majority) felt shafted. They would have been the ones going, oh, it has a touchscreen capability over here, let me get one of those suckers. And I have a windows phone to go along w/ every other ms thing. It is really flakey tho I hope it is getting better. Apple does consumer apps better, which is the only way they may a profit. Keep is simple for the stupids (including me!) does work. @

Though I certainly understand their motivation, I'm wary of any attempt to make an OS cross platform friendly. Desktops have different UI requirements than tablets, which are different from phones. For simple applications it's fine, but for anything remotely sophisticated, it's frustrating to use a big, dumbed-down touch interface when you have a mouse and keyboard. This is of course the main reason why Win8 got such a negative response - even though it was easily remedied by Classic Shell.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

An issue peripheral to this. Win 8 starts fast on my PC, have done personalization setups to get to the desktop fast. No problem there. It was just getting used to another way of getting things done. Use Classic Shell to get the XP type organization. Mainly transparent, I think. http://www.classicshell.net/ My problem is not getting win 8.1 to recognize anything but the Realtek or whatever internal sound card on the Dell. Can't get a Presonus external box recognized since it won't accept the drivers. All my dinosaur but vital useful Goldwave or Audition editors etc can't record anything. Audition 3 immediately crashes. Ver 1.5 at least opens but won't record. The one software that records rock solid for me is Audacity. The guys explained to me in detail why it works when other programs are doomed to fail in win 8, but forgot most of what the reason was. Audacity has released a recent upgrade, ver 2.0.6. Never had paid much attention to it until was forced to use it with win 8. Has progressed over the years into quite a powerful and full featured program. Open source and free. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ John (edit) The new version of Classic Shell is solid. Just installed ver 4.1.0. Minor aesthetic point as the program hilights recently installed programs by default. Here's the fix if it bothers: http://www.classicshell.n...pic.php?f=7&t=1566

Thanks for that link lawp! I can see why MS wants one OS for everything. MS has been trying to integrate all devices together ever since I started reading about MS! This has been their goal all along. If they can pull it off correctly, then it would be much easier for developers to produce apps for the OS that could be used everywhere. Once that becomes easier, then the apps will start to multiply over and over. Think of this: CW puts out Sonar that can be used on a desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone, watch. Sonar would know what device it's on, and set itself with features that are specific to that device. With my watch I can press a button and start recording, IOW use it as a remote. And so on. You could see where this goes. I know this exists somewhat now, but with improvements to the OS it could really be phenomenal!
