Interesting article about the shake up of Microsoft going on right now. However this is shredded with bias. I wasn't a big fan of 8.0 either but 8.1 is fine. The fact is that Windows 8 is a good OS for a new user, a great OS for a tablet, and Windows 7 user's shouldn't lose much sleep in upgrading, there may be slight benefits if they do however (not much). That does not make this a bad OS. It is clear it is an interim release with many tentacles feeling what could be the road ahead. Code is clearly going to be revised and merged in future. "You might not agree with my assessment of Windows, but again: I speak from long experience and many discussions with fellow Windows users." Nothing like a little self justification . (Edited as I missed out a word)

I moved from Windows 7 to 8.1 in a desperate attempt to resolve some very weird USB issues with my RME Fireface UFX. I was surprised at how easy it was to get used to 8.1. For a number of reasons, the change was less disruptive than previous new OS installations. Performance is at least as good as Win 7. "Disaster"? Why?

I actually disagree with the author (at the link addy - Not Scott), and this article is written with clearly discernible bias. I would not go back to W7..I know this as I recently had cause to re-install an "image" of my W7 installation...well I could not wait to get back to W8.1 , honestly!! And I don't have a touchscreen. Just a normal desktop PC. These "doomsayers" and "vexatious litigants" on the W8 OS are a dime a dozen and IMO anything they say should be taken with a pinch of salt. That's enough cliches LOL!! The only real mistake was RT, which IS being phased out. Microsoft have determined (imo only) that trying to maintain three separate OS's (Desktop, RT, Phone) is a bit silly, and I agree. Which is why they are in the process of developing a unified OS, with variations only in some aspects depending on the target hardware. Now, I am NOT a Microsoft fanboy, in fact if I could afford it I would go to Apple (too much invested in software and software instruments and programs to afford re-buying it all) but I do like to acknowledge a good product. Once you get used to it, (and it DOES take getting used to it) it is slick, easy to use and a more robust system than W7. One needs to look behind articles like these as there are often ulterior motives at play (financial rewards, for eg), or some personal issues. Maybe the writer got "knocked" for information, or was not given access to staff and resources ...or maybe he just didn't get a free copy at release...who knows, all I am saying is to exercise caution when reading articles like these. Although I am a little surprised at SG's promulgation of the story.

Let's face it...
Both 7 & 8 work.... The problem with win 8 seems mostly that it somewhat pushes a user to go Metro unless they are willing to do extra things and take additional steps to get around Metro....
Once either system is up and running with Sonar, they are both fine... Others programs? Most seem ok... The program updater is extremely clumsy to me... But the redundancy of steps to move around the system is always in the way...
Win 7? A solid step for sure....
Hers hoping the shakeout gets things on a better path...
Thanks for posting this topic and link Scott...

Oh and a subtle objection to the OP headline (which is a tad sensationalist imo) the OS is evolving, and not facing any wholesale changes that the headline is seemingly trying to imply. fwiw I tried a few of the "classic shell" apps - a waste of time imo, learn to use the Windows Key Combinations, very quick and far easier than any mouse! EG Windows Key+X then P = control panel. Or simply pressing the Windows Key to alternate between desktop and Metro...The three you need to know are Windows Key + C ; + X ; + R this gets you to pretty much anything you need to do...Mind you this is not new to W8, it has been around for ages, I guess folks get used to using a mouse and think it is the easiest solution. W8 makes it even easier to use a KB for a lot of tasks.

I personally like Windows 8. I'm not having any stability issues. The Metro thing is an improvement in my opinion. In previous versions of Windows, I really don't remember using the start button. I had desktop icons for the programs that I used. It don't see what the big deal is about not having to scroll through a tree menu to find a program or function. If I ever need to go to "control panel" ,I start typing control panel and it brings me there. I think the new search everywhere function in 8.1 is awesome also.

The problem with the young turks in Microsoft who work on this stuff is that their trendy little worlds revolve around tablets and phones and they regard desktop PCs as positively stone age. They just don't understand (well, they do, but they just want to design the toys THEY like to play with) that millions and millions of desktop computers are used by companies and that's where MSoft made their huge profits in previous years. These companies have no need to scrap their desktops and instead give their staff funky tablets and a bean bag to play on. If Windows 9 is a genuine improved OS that these huge buyers like, MSoft will ship millions and regain their footing. I will buy it for my studio - I too have no need in that environment of tablets and phones and I will not be forced to use an OS and UI that is unsuitable just because some geek tells me it surely must be. Until the selfish and childish Msoft developers are whipped into shape by a boss that tells them "You will NOT work on what you find exciting and wilfully ignore what you deem boring at the expense of what our big customers want", they will continue on the route to failure.

Windows 9 - where did you get that from? W9 is at LEAST two years away (assuming MS follow the same process of the Beta Release Candidate program - which is two candidate releases over approx 6-8 moths each) then a final beta candidate, and then the final release product..Usually takes about two years all up..and they have not even announced a prelim beta for W9 yet......it will come (and it will be very similar to W8.1) but it is a long way down the road. W8 still has many updates yet. And with W phone 8 (also possibly being upgraded to match 8.1) the differences are becoming less discernible. RT is dead. Oh and the "big customers" also were screaming and kicking when XP went to Vista, and then to W7 - but they still upgraded over time and grudgingly acknowledged it was a better system (although NOT Vista which was a dog) . Big business always complains, about everything, really!

No, I think by that time silence is the new loud. I know, because I am an experienced louder guy. And I have spoken with other people which also happen to be loud. Regarding the Win8 OS - for me it has been stable as a rock, both on my day to day laptop (old Lenovo T410s, I've had Win8 on this since it was beta) And just upgraded to Win8 on my DAW - working perfectly. I use Win7 on my company PC. I actually do miss some of the new Win8 features sometimes.

I too disagree with the article. Has Windows 8 had it's problems? Yeah, certainly. I think that 8.1 addressed a vast majority of those issues. The article is misleading at best. With Windows 8, Microsoft went on a planed year by year updating of the OS. gone are the days of "Service Packs". It's been replaced by a dot release. This coming October they will release Windows 8.2 which will be a free upgrade as 8.1 was. As someone already said Windows 9 is a couple years down the road at best. Computers have changed drastically in form factors. Windows 8 has had a huge impact. Traditional desktops are a niche market, and touch screens are almost everywhere. I think touch is a huge thing for the DAW world and Sonar took advantage of it in X2a. The fact is that Microsoft has been working with several OEM vendors on touch screen capability for years, even way before the iPhone/iPad. They were working on this stuff back in the early 2000's. There were two problems, 1.) it was too expensive, 2.) XP was a horrible touch screen experience. Windows 7 I think was the first OS to have built in support for touch devices. For XP and Vista, I think it was a special distribution. However Windows 7 only handled 2 point touch, and touch was not a great experience on Windows 7. Windows 8 completed the experience with 10 point touch, and a tweaking of the user interfact to take advantage of that. Windows 8 was the most radical change to Windows since '95. And yeah it didn't go over too well. I think it was a mistake to have it launch you to the metro start screen on bootup. I think the change was too jarring. I think 8.1 fixed a lot of things, and I work 90% of the time out of the classic desktop. With the new start button added back in, the metro start screen works mostly like Launchpad does for Mac, so I don't see it as a big deal. As far as stability, speed and mostly security, I wouldn't use anything but Windows 8 at this point. I still use Windows 7 at work and it's still a great OS. But I wouldn't go back to 7 on my DAW machine. One of the best features of Windows 8, is built in multi monitor support for the task bar. No more purchasing 3rd party apps to extend your task bar!

I still haven't cleared the first impression of Win8 being an effort to unify code between computers/tablets/phones. This approach has merit with web design (Adobe's sales pitch), but I would have the same reaction if web pages came up looking like a "giant phone app" too. The features removed from Win7, and the fact that Win8 could not be backed out of stopped me dead in my tracks. That is a colossal "risk" with the amount of effort put into this machine.
