Windows Product Key
Is there another way to get this, than off the bottom of the laptop. My sticker vanished a long time ago. I'm assuming I need it to upgrade from 7 to 10.

Ahh cool. It's just my small travel and work laptop, hence the sticker going. Thanks for that

Looks like I have to pay fr the version that gives me the product key, but I think I can handle that. Seems from Noels Post that the laptop will run more efficiently and being just a little laptop, that may make more noticeable difference. Plus my version of Windows has a fixed default Desktop back ground, so I can have something more interesting

Great tip, Jeff! Thanks. That could be a lifesaver someday. My own insurance has been to maintain a master file that contains every serial number and product key I've ever installed, along with logins and passwords, bank account numbers and social security numbers for the whole family. I've been copying that file forward from machine to machine for 35 years (its original incarnation was on an Apple ][ !). Granted, it would be a treasure-trove for an identity thief, but I keep it well-hidden and password-protected.

Yes I do the same, except not for Windows, I usually have the book the CD, the box or whatever with the product key stored away, but for some reason I couldn't locate it for this laptop, that's when I had to call on the jelly bean.

I have the same as Bit, it's called the "blackbook" becuase it was originally a ,, that's right, a little black book... It's in drop box which is sort of scarry but it allows me to fetch passwords and serial numbers from any one of my many computers. It is encripted text that only I will understand as the passwords are not verbatium but clues like "Top Drawer". see that means nothing unless you know what I keep in my top drawer. And bank numbers are cleverly noted as phone numbers. A huge asset is to use dropbox screen capture as well. Like with Sonar, I have screen shots of my account pages and serial numbers. This is stored with a date so it's easy to look for the most up to date ones. If you have drop box instaled the first time you do ALT/ Prnt Scrn it will ask you if you want to store screen shots.

Technically, it is not encrypted text but hints and misdirection. It would probably be safer to actually encrypt the list of secure items on you computer, then upload that encrypted database to the cloud. In that case even a clever guesser, and the cloud provider would not have anything to grasp. I have been using Keepass, which can easily store passwords, account and registration numbers etc. as well as screen captures and other files as encrypted attachments. Of course you can still use your personal hint system within an encrypted container, steganography in attached photos or whatever. The database and the program can be loaded onto a USB stick and used on any Windows computer without installation, but that probably exposes you to security loss if the computer you use it on is compromised. So it, like every other security system you use is only as secure as the computer you use it on. And at some point, you are going to need to transfer the actual password to an application, which will make it available to a keylogger, screen reader, clipboard viewer etc. on the machine you are using. Public computers are as secure as a billboard printed with your passwords. The cloud, dropbox etc. is only as secure as your computer, any computer it passes through, and any computer or removable, backup or discarded storage it is saved to. And of course any account that lets you use a password hint to recover your password has a hole big enough to drive a truck through. So never use anything anyone can guess. City where you were born? Syphilitic Orangutan. So anything you can do to limit the ability of anyone to the file out of your control is a major benefit. http://www.zdnet.com/article/dropbox-google-drive-onedrive-files-man-cloud-attack/?tag=nl.e539&s_cid=e539&ttag=e539&ftag=TRE17cfd61

Belarc Advisor is a free program that will retrieve all your program keys and hardware information. It lets you print out a report. The older I get the more dyslexic I get, I don't trust myself to write down a bunch of keys correctly.

You don't need to enter the product key to upgrade to Windows 10 from 7 or 8. Also a new key for Windows 10 will be generated and saved on the Windows license server under your machine key. If you make some types of changes to the hardware in Windows 10, you make need to re-activate Windows 10. Usually it's a just call to an automated process attached to a license server. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 overtop an already activated Windows 10 version, you can skip the product key entry and your version will be re-activated from the license server if the hardware ID is the same (or make that telephone call to the automated licensing system). I just went through this process: - Install Windows 7 Pro in VirtualBox.
- Upgrade that to Windows 10 Pro.
- Download the Windows 10 Pro ISO.
- Re-install, a clean install, of that ISO in Windows 10.
Except for the Windows 7 install, I did not need any product key. So, in short, you don't really need to worry about this anymore. There are many product key finders: Belarc, Magic Jelly Bean, Produkey, ShowKeyPlus, KeyFinder, productkey.vbs, etc.. All of these are free or have free versions. Another useful thing (if you save detail), is the signed license manager data. In an elevated command prompt type: slmgr.vbs /? for command list slmgr.vbs /dlv for licensing details

+ 1 for BELARC ADVISOR One thing still is unclear for me. After I upgraded to Win10 from Win7 I ran Belarc again to find out that a new key had been generated for WIN10. My question: I've downloaded WIN 10 iso from my "internet" desktop to upgrade all my computers. Will that iso be linked only to the desktop it was downloaded from? (I've read somewhere that MS media creation tool was linking the ISO to the motherboard processing it...) So, will my new windows 10 key will work as-is with the ISO from my "net computer" or will I be forced to create the ISO via running the MS media creation tool on my DAW laptop directly? Silly question, I know, but some info I am finding online are close to being contradictory... as far as I can understand at least.

It's been a few weeks since I upgraded to Windows 10 but I believe when you down load the ISO it asks if the the down load is for the current computer or for another one.

There's probably a zillion people with the same code. Your machine details are stored in the cloud for authorisation purposes. As long as you have upgraded from win7/8 to win10 (by running setup within windows) and completed the installation (check you are authorised), you can reinstall win10 much as you like afterwards on that machine.. Inc wiping the partition and installing clean. No other way apart from buying win10.

Yes it does. But when I tried it the key I was providing was not working. (But I had NOT first upgraded to Win 10 on that machine before trying to install the ISO... that may be the reason why).

The rule is. You must run setup within win 7/8 first, do not boot from DVD! After that you can do a completely clean install by booting off DVD/USB whatever. No upgrade, no authorisation, on a per machine basis. Bottom line.

Oh and make darn sure your BIOS is set not to boot off DVD if you do an upgrade off DVD (or USB) first time around. After reboot it starts installation from scratch and won't authorize (really bad design from MS). Other way is to immediately remove DVD when machine reboots first time.

I pay $20 a year for Roboform. It is nice that most developers keep track of serial numbers. Cakewalk has my Sonar 2 serials listed. I also like how AD and Toontrack allow you to name your machines. Multiple licenses of the same product can be a real hassle.
