Windows tweaks in Win 7?

I have just upgraded to Win 7 and have been going thru the tweaks prescribed in the various Cakewalk forums (going back to 2010) and I am still perplexed by one:

Adjust for Best Perfomance OR Let Windows choose what's best for my computer (Systwem Properties / Performance Options). I chose the former under Vista but I perceive in the forums ambiguity under Win 7. Anyone know which is best for Sonar?

Leave that setting at its default. There's no reason to change it in Win7.

Windows 7 is a nice operating system, right out of the box. Basically, nothing needs to be tweaked except power management (Power Schemes) to always on, and turn core parking off, and Windows sounds off.

Refer to the following thread for how to do those things, if you need to: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1862515

man i have seen these tweak threads with like:
"25 things to boost windows 7 performance while using your daw" (example)
its all a farse, unless your running a computer that is borderline system requirments.
this is the sole opion of chuck e baby.
if you feel like turning off aero effects will boost performance 00000.16 more.
then i guess it wouldnt hurt,in my opinion though,if you need to go looking for ways to boost your performance of your computer, its a tell tale sign you need a new computer.

i hope im not taking away from the question you asked though,it was a reasonable question.
(ive asked it before as well)i guess i just took this in a different direction, sorry man.  :)

Recording music is important to me, so I fit it in my budget to keep up with the latest computer.  I make sure no unwanted programs are running in the registry or Msconfig, etc.  And only have music software on my music PC.  That's just me, haven't had any issues with my setup at all.  ; )

Yeah, It's changed, both in terms of the performance of Windows 7 and processor speed. I think up to Sonar 7 running under XP and Vista, sometimes tweaks could (and even then, only marginally) help DAW performance for underpowered processors. Nowadays it's just not necessary and often can lead to unforeseen complications. I bought a new, off the shelf HP Pavilion i3 laptop a few months back, and whilst not my main studio DAW, decided to try loading it up to run as a mobile rig, which had proved most unsuccessful on previous attempts on laptops. This time, with the i3 and Windows 7 64-bit. It runs flawlessly. (Not connected but really does make me wonder how some people seem to have so many problems with their installations).

Just my ponderings, but hope it helps

All it is a HUGE help and I appreciate it much! Incidentally Thomas, I hadn't done the core parking regedit but now, I guess I'll man up and do it. And Charlie not to worry, your reinforcement of the topic question is also reassuring and good to know I am probably "good to go" as is! With 2 weeks of upgrades in between work schedules, I am ready to get back to music and the other side of my brain.

Hi robbyk:

When you turn off core parking don't forget to do the Improved Multi-Core load balancing tweak in SONAR. To get to the Aud.ini file in X1, with the Advanced Option checked in Preferences go to Preferences>Audio>Configuration File. Below is an excerpt from the threrad I linked to above in this thread. The excerpt explains  the Multi-Core load balancing integers. Cya around, and may you get losts of satisfaction from X1. :)

9- Sonar Tweaks:
* Improved Multi-Core load balancing  [From Noel's SONAR 8.3 Log]

Since all systems are not made equal we decided to make this new scheduling mode configurable.
From the help file, the new aud.ini option to control this is:

ThreadSchedulingModel=<0 - 2>
Type Integer
Default 1

This variable goes in the [Wave] section and controls the interaction of the main audio thread and worker threads on multiprocessor systems when the Use Multiprocessing Engine option is enabled. Depending on the system, a particular model may result in less glitching and better overall performance. The values are as follows:

............0 = Same as previous versions of SONAR.
............1 = (default) Better thread balance. Model is more efficient and can provide cycles for other tasks.
............2 = Additional worker thread is created. This may result in improvement with Quad processor systems or higher. Not recommended for Dual processor systems.

To change this go to Options::Audio::Advanced Tab in Sonar and click on the "Edit Config File" button.  This opens up the AUD.INI file in NotePad where you'll find the above entry (ThreadSchedulingModel) under the [WAVE] section.  Change it to a value of 2 (for Quad Core CPUs and higher only) and then Save the file.  Now close it and click on the "Reload Config Settings" button, click "OK" and restart Sonar.  Now enjoy even core loadings :-)

NOTE:  Sometimes you may not find this variable even though you're using Sonar v.8.3 or higher.  In this case, you'll need to manually delete the AUD.INI file so that Sonar can recreate it and include all the new entries.  Just navigate to the Sonar folder (usually found under Program Files/Cakewalk/[inser your version of Sonar here] and you'll see a shortcut to the "Cakewalk User Data" folder.  Double-click it and then go to the Sonar folder.  There you will see the file named AUD, which you can delete.  Obviously, you want to do this will Sonar is closed.  The next time you open Sonar, all the new variables will now show up.

if you need to go looking for ways to boost your performance of your computer, its a tell tale sign you need a new computer.

It's not so much a question of boosting performance, especially when dealing with an i7 2600K  and Win 7 for example, but rather a question of streamlining background processes (such as scheduled tasks) that may fire at the most inopportune times. It's been mentioned more than once that Win 7 works well enough OTB to not have to stress about these tweaks. Since I'm comfortable with anything and everything computer related, I've streamlined my dedicated DAW with as a result..., a very stable and reliable platform. Would it have been any different had I not done this? I like to believe so, but then I'm a bit of a fanatic.
