Wish me luck

I had managed to quit smoking for over a year before I met my wife. Then I started back again, but I always thought that I was merely accompanying her and that the minute she'd be ready to quit, I'd gladly quit again.

I do smoke a whole lot more than she does though - I can't just smoke a few, I don't have the discipline. I'm an obsessive smoker. But I hate it and I'm ready to quit. And tonight is like our last big night out w/ alcohol and cigarettes - though we'll probably be rather quiet. We have a few friends playing and we jumped on the opportunity to see them, spend a last semi-decadent night out. We've been living the very very very quiet life since last year - I think we've outgrown that old lifestyle...

Anyway, May 1st, we quit smoking. She opted for laser - I'm going w/ patches (I'm old school, analog type of guy - no way you'll put a laser anywhere near my brain ;)

This leaves a couple of weeks for her voice to settle back before we move back to NY and the rehearsals/shows start again, late may. And I'm sure it'll also make the transition to the climate in Vegas easier. It's funny how your body goes through those transitions when you move in different areas - getting used to water, air, the climate...

I bet you the studio furniture will love me for that! And I can get back into training, martial arts and all that stuff.

I'm quite confident. Last time I quit was under the worst possible circumstances - my ex told me she was seeing someone else the next day and left for the night.

I went to the grocery, bought 3 bottles of wine, 2 packs of smokes, drank the wine and knocked myself out but left the opened pack of cigarettes there under my nose w/o touching them - usually I'd smoke at least twice as much when I'd drink, but I pulled through - and still went to work the next day.  If I did it then, I can do it again.

W/ the packs at $14 in NY - and me smoking at least one a day - Sam Ash better get ready to see some serious money. ;)

Good luck Rain!  Quitting smoking was harder for me than quitting other illegal substances.  I've been clean of all of it for 22 years!

    you can do it!

Best of luck with giving up!

It's just coming up to ten years since I stopped smoking - I (just) managed it at the first attempt with the help of the patches. There have been many occasions when I could have murdered for a cigarette, but I haven't smoked even one since.

I think you have the fact that you're a habitual smoker (as I was) in your favour. I've always been led to believe that people who just smoke 'socially' for enjoyment find it harder to quit. I used to love a big fat cigar every now and again so I deliberately knocked those on the head well in advance of the cigarettes.

    Thanks guys.

I hate to need a smoke, I hate to have to plan everything in function of the next "fix" - like putting patches traveling on a plain or a bus. I hate to go to a concert and see my focus shift after an hour because I need a smoke, and it keeps of nagging me non stop. It gets in the way of me enjoying things. Waiting for everyone to finish their meal to excuse myself from the table, and all...

When I quit the last time, the one cigarette I really missed was when I walked out of work at 5. But it went away quickly. For a while, I'd go to party w/ friends, and something inside me sort of wished I felt like smoking, but I couldn't feel it. It was like a gap where the reflex used to be.

The one thing I'm more worried about is my wife's throat. There's some serious re-organization happening in your respiratory system when you quit - my own voice went from Barry White-like to normal. But then again, I don't have the technique - I just push out notes. She has total control over her instrument, she's used to controlling it, so I guess she'll figure it out quickly. Still, the doctors told her to plan on quitting while she was off... Just hoping 3 weeks will be enough to re-adjust.

She'll be able to figure it out, Rain.  it will take some adjustments, but I'm pretty sure it won't be that difficult for her.

Well, being around different forums, there are a lot of people rolling their own cigarettes with cigarette tobacco bought on-line or at a tobacco place. Usually they state it tastes better, don't smoke as much, more satisfying, except you have to watch the ash, as it is not fire-****ant factory made cigarettes. It's also a lot cheaper.

    Luck to both of you.
I quit a year or so ago and also went with the patch.

One thing I have to ask is what is this laser thing you speak of.
Maybe it'll help my little lady.

The main thing is that you really have to want to quit or it probably won't work.

Good luck man, quiting smoking was very hard.  It's been around 15 years for me.  I used to compete in Judo and was hindered by lack of cardio caused from smoking.  So ya, getting back into martial arts should definately help motivate you.

Also, within the last 3 years my wife and I have lost 3 family members to lung cancer, watching a loved one go through that is also a motivator.  Horrible!  I would say after the first year of being smoke free, I felt like I had never smoked a cigarette before and had no desire ever again to smoke.

Good luck Rain, I'm hoping for your success here and that seeing it happen will further diminish any justification I have to continue with the habit.

    Good luck Rain!

It's a great feeling to not smoke. I've quit since Jauary 1st this year and it feels great! And I have extra cash! I've had the occasional cigg (4 I think) since then at parties and the greatest victory for me is to not want another cigarette when waking up the next day. Makes me feel in controll.

That, and the chewing gum. OK, I'm addicted to chewing gum now but that's fine. I'd rather get a strong jaw than weak lungs.

Good luck to you and your missus buddy!

Don't agree with that at all. I was definitely in the social category (ie as soon as the the beers came out) but I just decided one day that when this pack was gone that would be it. No more.

Never touched them since (about 15 years now). Just had to avoid the pub for a few weeks at first. Been a few times when I felt the urge, but a bit of 2nd hand smoke cured that.

I think you have to want to give up and if you can't do it, then you just don't want to enough. Rather than waste even more money on patches / gum whatever I would just suggest putting all the money you would usually spend on cigs into a jar or something and you'll soon see the benefits of giving up.

I quit 15 years ago and never thought I could.  Wow, it changed my life.  You can do it.  Be expecting those waves of wanting to smoke.  They will come and try to knock you off your path.  You have to be ready and just move ahead.  In time, those waves will gradually cease.

Best of luck.  This will save your life!

I was fortunate that I never had the urge to smoke (cigarettes that is).  I guess I got that from my mothers, but my two siblings and my father were all pack a day or more smokers for many years.  My father gave up after a mild heart attack and a quadruple bypass at age 50, my brother about 5 years ago, and my sister still smokes to this day despite trying patches, gum, even trying Chantix a few times.  My wife smoked for the fist 12 years of our relationship and gave up the day I was diagnosed with Leukemia.

I've seen some diehard smokers quit with little issue, and unfortunately a few that couldn't including my stepson who is up to over two packs a day in his mid 20's (he sounds like a 40 year smoker coughing out years of cigarettes each morning when he gets up - it's awful).  I do wish you well with this effort and know it will be a true victory when you are rid of this terrible habit.

    Good luck Rain.

    Thanks, guys.

I'm not overly worried about food - I can't seem to put on weight due to genetics. Anyway, it's all linked for me - I quit smoking so I start training again and as a result, I tend to have a pretty healthy diet.

I'm fully motivated and the timing is right.

I'm not sure, I'll have to ask my wife - since I didn't have any interest in that method, I didn't really investigate. I think they basically bombard a part of your brain that's "responsible" for addiction. I don't trust that.

I think it might work - like self-hypnosis and placebo. The will to quit has got to be in your head first. Patches make more sense to me.

Good luck Rain. Good luck to your wife also. Once a day, drink the juice of a lemon + equal part water, tbl spn of honey, pinch of cayenne pepper, hot. It'll help remove the toxins from your system. Me, I'm still struggling with the habit.

Rain, another tip that really made it easier to give up was asking friends and family not to mention it every time they saw me. Nothing reminds you how much you want a cigarette than someone asking how the quitting cigarettes is going.
