Without You-Nilsson Cover
http://soundcloud.com/aaudiomystiks/withoutyou Ok I've been fiddling around with Reapers varispeed over the last couple of months mainly because there is no way I could hit Nilsson's notes on this classic song. What I have done is lower the pitch of the song by half a semitone in the verses and a whole tone in the chorus's, I think, I have no real way to tell. I've also fiddled with Rolands variphrase to ADT and ATT or artifical double track and artifical tripple track. Rather than corect a couple of off notes on the original vocal, I have corrected the double track voice, this is to try and hide the obvious. Whether you can tell, well thats up to you. Now I have cheated somewhat, I downloaded a midi file of the track and then used Cakes, TruePiano, Session Drummer Three (Rings Beat Kit), Dimension Pro Strings and Studio Instruments bass. I should have put the bass down myself but I was being lazy. I did however do the lead solo at the end but I am hopelessy out of form. There is no way I am going to say I nailed the vocals or the track but it was cathartic in that it helps heal a broken heart and as I say I was interested in Reapers varispeed capabilities and Cakewalk need this feature in whatever the next release is. It is awsome varispeed. Finally I have not gone over to the darkside, Reaper is not a nice looking program and I wouldn't use it but for the varispeed, this song was mixed and put together in Sonar X1. Peace Ben

Ben, good job man. That first chorus and high part startled me! Stratosphere. Now I hear it was the lead guitar! After reading your post I thought it was your voice put through that thingy-bob. Rimshot

Wow.... pretty cool. Your voice in this has a certain John Lennon quality to it in more than a few places. this is well done my friend. Quite a huge improvement from your past projects..... keep up the good work. There were a few places where I was trying to push you up another half step on the vocals..... but you were wayyyyyyy up there already. Melodyne would have got you there.... In the parts where you were in your active range however, your vox were really pretty solid. I'm currently working on a tune, that from the very nature of the genre gets pretty high in the chorus..... so I'm thinking I might have to use falsetto to get there myself on it. Falsetto might have got you there on that one note. Remember there are singers who made careers on just falsetto. Barry White is not one of them however. All in all Ben, a great cover.

Wow Ben. This is a nice rendition of a nice tune man! The vocal was just a little shy of its mark on the highest notes, but I could have never touched where you were there, and I'm not saying the vocals were bad so don't misunderstand me here. They were overall quite good actually. I really like this song a lot. I might have added some slight verb to the drums but I see why you probably didn't do that because too much can rob the effect you put on the vocals. All subjective.

Pleasantly surprised with this Ben, you did a really creditable job of tackling a very difficult song. You almost had a Liam Gallagher thing going on here and there

As soon as I saw the Lennon reference, I had to listen. Ben, you did a very good job with this....and yes, some very Lennonistic vocal nuances coming from you on the vocals. I liked it....good job man! Not sure that John could have hit some of those high notes.

Yes, you do evoke an image of JL with this tune. Kind of fitting since John and Harry were famous drinking buddies. You are on the right path.

Thanks guys, yea when I do my head voice I become very Lennonesque but I grew up listening and emulating him. What I needed was a producer to help me because I can hit the notes albeit with the help of the varispeed in Reaper, it's just I have spent weeks learning the vocal and when I did finally go for it I almost blew my vocal chords, I mean the day after I did this vocal my chords were actually swollen, I actually felt a little sick. The other thing was I was getting complaints from the neighbours, they the realestate people sent a notice about noise levels and threatened to throw me out. NO ****!!!. Thanks and peace Ben

"Ok I've been fiddling around... " I think you should stop fiddling around until you are wearing the proper safety equipment. This has always been a favorite song of mine. I'm not fond of your version though. The entire mood of the song seems to have been altered or lost here. The vocals seem strained and the lead guitar is annoying, doing more harm than good. I do think it's worthy of a makeover though. Sorry, just my honest opinion.
