Wonderful...did I buy the wrong mic...or what is my problem here?

O.K., so I got a Peavy PVi2. This one:

http://www.amazon.com/Peavey-Dynamic-Cardiod-Microphone-XLR/dp/B0002F6OJE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1301100094&sr=8-1

When I got it I noticed that it has two XLR ends. So, I went to the store and the guy told me I needed a line matching transformer for the adapter, or I would lose sound due to this being a low end mic.

So I get home, hook it up, and there is barely anything registering when I record. The vocals are there, but are damn near non-existent. I scream at the top of my lungs and I might get the read peak light to show up.

So, what do I have here that is wrong? Or am I missing a setting in MC5? I was so excited to finally lay down some vocals.

Seems like you'll need a PRE AMP to boost the signal. Your sound card must not have one.

A small mixer will act as a preamp at a price under $100.  Likely any mic will act the same way so I doubt it's the mic. Most likely it's the soundcard not having the preamps built in,

I don't know, I used a crappy mic I have here from Rock Band and that works, it just sounds like I am standing in a tin can. There is a switch on the UA-1G for either mic or guitar.

*sigh* I'm looking around and I am seeing some folks talking about using preamps with the UA-1G. I have found one on Amazon that is pretty dang cheap and has some nice features. Guess I will be ordering that tonight. :( Actually, I might hold off. I am going up to my mom's house on Sunday, and she has a few decent pawn shops by her. Might look there first.

check with Beagle...I think he ....and a few others use a very inexpensive Berringher mixer that works well as a pre.

    I'm looking at this one:

I'm still running in the world of "cheap as I can go" until I see how effective I will be with this stuff. So far I am very happy with what little I have accomplished with my OLD demos. My only complaint now is that I still suck at soloing. For my new stuff, my big complaint is my problems on figuring out the drum programming. That and adjusting to playing with a drum machine it tough. I never thought that could be so tough. But I digress.

re, what Guitarhacker wrote, I have used the Behringer Xenyx 802 successfully. You should be able to pick one up for about $60.
Not the best pre's around, but a decent unit, and fairly versatile for handling different inputs. Just send the output to the line ins of your UA1

Most mics that I've seen with on/off switches use a battery. Check if it has one and maybe it needs changing?

$30 ain't bad. I haven't use the ART or known of anyone who does...so I can not comment on it.

    Nope, no battery for sure.

The $30 or so also won't be so bad as this means I will be returning the $20 adapter I thought I had to buy. All of the pre-amps I have seen have the XLR jack, and a regular 1/4" output jack.
