Won't Get Fooled Again

This cover was a load of fun to put together.  I did the vocals, played acoustic and electric guitars.  That leaves organ, bass, and drums, all of which are sequenced.  Configuring the drums to emulate Keith Moon was a chore, but very gratifying, and the legendary organ part was way cool to work on as well.

Hey Jerry, nice job.  The reverb is a little strong for me and the mix lacks something.  I don't know what, at first I thought it lacked some zing at the top end but I'm not sure maybe it just needs punch.  Also the drums are a little loose at the start.

    Good job though.

    Peace Ben

    Hey, Jerry,

Welcome to the forum, and excellent job on this great cover of one of my all time favorite rock classics!

Nice work on all of the instrumental performances and vocals, and the Yellowstone pictures in the video were great.  I did this song in several of my cover bands over the years, and it's always been a knock out crowd pleaser.

    Nice work!

Nice job.... especially on the drums....I can't imagine trying to sequence Moon's playing.  Guitar tone is that speaker ripping crunchy cranked sound that was classic Who....

I think the video was well done but off target totally. Nice pictures for sure... but  the message in the music didn't fit. This would have been better served with pictures of politicians from both sides of the political aisle....and maybe even video snippits with some voice of the pols spouting their generic statements about saving social security or some other such nonsense.

Thanks for the feedback Herb.  The drums were more fun once they started to sound right, but a pain in the butt to transpose.  I split the drum track out of the original and listened intently to every beat.  Took a while to do but that's the only way I knew to get the result I wanted.

I chose this song to go with the pictures, not vice versa, and I was leaning heavily on irony and tongue in cheek to match up what I had with the music.  My statement with the video is not counter-culture, realizations of sentimentality of youthful rebellion as the lyrics suggest.  Mine was trying to say that the beauty all around us is not as appreciated until we pause to take it in, and once we realize it, we won't get fooled again.

Your idea would be great for a video in the context of the lyrics and vibe of the song.

Loved this one, Jerry!   Of all the songs to cover, this one is so challenging on many levels - drums, guitars, vocals.  Your renditions and mixing is top-notch.   I also really enjoyed the picture/video and it all fit together so very well!  great job!

Nice job! I recently saw a documentary about The Who. Who knew their songs were so political.

    Well done!

Yeah, they were the voice of the angst of youth before punk rock was conceived.  There's a big difference though between them and the punk rock genre - they were outstanding musicians and created unbelievably wonderful music.

Hats off to you on that drum programming. I have always loved this tune. You certainly did it justice here. The pics were nice to watch while I listened. Never been to Yellowstone...one day maybe. Great job!

    Thanks Starise!

One thing I would like to redo on this song is the organ.  Pete Townshend played a double keyboard Lowry TBO-1 organ.  None of the options I had to choose from in Cakewalk had the tone, bite and energy of the one Pete used.  I settled for the best tone, but it always sounds too thin for my liking.  Any suggestions I can pursue would be appreciated.

    Great job there.
I loved the sound and the vibe, realistic sound to me.
Sounds like a quality recording of a live performance, that's got to be a good thing!
Could do with a bit more level/punch on the Bass gtr.
I say this as i listened to the whole thing cranked right up in my studio.
    Very enjoyable!

I can see what you mean about the complicated drums.  I never heard the original, but I can appreciate the effort that must have gone into this.  Nice job!

Jerry that is really outstanding, especially the drums and -- just two bits here -- the keys are excellent. I have always thought that song has one of the most hypnotic key sequences of all time, and i think you nailed it. Congrats.
