Wookiee Tele update
I plan on sanding/shaping on this over the long weekend and I started this evening. It's so hot that I can't work on it long because I get it to wet. I brought it in and wiped it down and took a few shots and sent to John. I figure he's probably in Z land about now....and thought some here may like to see the progress. These photos were taken mainly to show John how I recovered from a bad mistake. When I was doing the roundover on the back- the depth stop on the router moved and it dug in to deep. I learned not to use the one with a depth stop. The only way to save it was to carve a relief which we originally decided it wouldn't have. I didn't do it by what Fender does....fact is I've never played a Tele with a relief -front or back. I carved it to fit me...all I had to go by. Hope you enjoy...

Wow, I think I'd spend about an hour pretending to play that even with no strings on it*! *once I got done just staring at it.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Spacey.... That looks like a real project to accomplish. I could not imagine building my own axe. The attention to detail must be challenging. My Ibanez Tele I bought new in '77 which was just prior to or just after Fender began litigation against them IIRC. Good luck on getting it finished with no further fur balls. It's looking good and I like that finish. Carry on....

Thanks for the kudos everyone. It really has been a fun project and hope it continues. One gas was enough for me! LOL Slugbaby... Quazelar- first off, thanks for your service. I didn't serve but sure proud of our troops and always have been...always will be. Man you have some great sounds. Been enjoying my break from sanding listening to you. Excellent. Great grooves, musicianship and writing. Would have really enjoyed jammin' the bay with ya. I put recording on hold two years ago to give building a shot and it's been a good trip. I quit music in '86 so the two years I got back to playin, recording and posting the tunes here in '07 were from an old guy building on old memories lol. Hope to get some new stuff going this winter.....you're sure an inspiration to get back at it. LOL Drew! I've done that a few times! I think the neck is balls on. Breaks over- thanks again.

Spacey...... I'm quite honored by your kind words and hope you regain inspiration to get 'back at it'. The most self critizing aspect for me is lyrics. Sometimes takes me a couple weeks to flesh out the lyrics to my satisfaction. But really, do we ever take our own material off the editing block?<grin> Well...don't know where you hail from but I'm still here by the bay. Me...1980 was my last band (3 piece easy rock...most fun endeavor). I couldn't put up with the flakes anymore. Since then I just write/record for my own enjoyment and at my own pace of writing. I'm 64 and figured I might be one of the few from the Pleistocene Epoch still stubbornly truckin' along. Thanks for giving my material a listen. No hijack intended.....careful with that dammed router and check in back here on your next coffe break to update us.

Well......I just sent a mail to John. I've always included the bad things with the good to the folks I've built for. I thought I'd mention what's happened. I'm not sure how many follow my posts that may be picking up stuff so..... Z-Poxy is a two part polyester resin that luthiers use. I decided after watching videos and reading to give it a go. It's suppose to be a great filler. Well I think it may be if you're building a boat. That crap is horrible. It not only filled pours it soaks in and stains or tints the wood. I didn't try it on a scrap piece because it's suppose to be a simple procedure - just great stuff....so they say. I'm having to go back to 80 grit to bring back the beauty of the sapele. Man I had down to 320 grit. Going back to 80 with all the parts sized and assembled.....not a fun thing. Added days to the build. Imagine all the little place....nightmare. A hard lesson learned - I'll never use Z-poxy again unless I'm building a boat! Another thing...the junk is nasty- not healthy. It's also like putting a plastic coat on a guitar....just horrible. Up yours Z-Poxy!! On the box; Odorless -stinks to beat hell-smells like dead fish Clear Formula - friggin lie too- two parts one being dark and left a brown-yellow tint -mix to specs. Non-brittle -Right. Try sanding that goowey crap off something. Sands easily - with a file or 80 grit paper and have a lot of that. Laminates wood and foam- what did I say? Probably great for boats or when guitars are made with wood and foam. Quazelar- I'm in northern Louisiana...can hit Arkansas with a rock from my backyard. Ya....had to router the roundover again trying to get that poxycrap off. Not a tool to take lightly. Man I hijack my own threads...that's just part of being spacey I guess....so no worries 'bout that lol.

Sorry to hear about the evils of Z-poxy. I know you have the skills to fix it. Sad to hear that you have to waste your time doing it over again when you could have been working on something new. Best of luck on the repair.

My wife and I have had knock down drag out arguments over varnishes. I like the good stuff... and she think she likes what the guys that sell finishes to the get it done quick and get rid of it faster guys want to tell her. Selecting a good finish product is really hard because the best stuff hardly has any advertising or brand name ID and the not really very good stuff has loads and loads of advertising and lots of advocates that ignore the downsides while telling you it's ok to use not so good stuff. Good luck... I know you get back to what you wanted!!! best regards, mike

Thanks Old55. Mike, just for the record- I wan't using it as a finish. I like an oil finish. I was going for pour filling. I usually use a water based micro bead....and will be next one-no doubt. This has been a learning experience no doubt. The first thing is I went against my better judgement in more ways than one. It's a polyester resin. Plastic. No place for that on one of my builds. I have to try new things and thought I should since so many luthiers use it. Well they can have it. I'm done with it. Well I went to town and loaded up with 80 - 150 grit paper and foam pads...usually don't use much of those rough grits but this is war! 30 dollars worth of anti-z-poxy. The only thing needed was one of the things that folks around here do so well....support and the vote of confidence. Now I'm ready to attack! Thank you.
