Word Length on dbx 386 won't stay locked

I am using a dbx 386 mic pre and a MOTU 828MKII sound card and have the word clock on the dbx slaved to the clock on the MOTU (there is also a SPDIF connection). When I power up both units together they synch up and the sample rates and word length are 48K and 24 respectfully. The problem is after time, the word length changes by itself to 20 or 16. I can manually change the word length to 20 but not to 24.

Is this a word clock termination issue (dbx mentions something about this in the manual)? Sonar reports that my project is at 24bit/48K sample rate. I suspect that I am getting a 20 bit recording when using SPDIF from the dbx. Could this be true (20 bit source coming into a 24 bit project)? I tried opening a previous project that I used a 20 bit word length on and got mismatched sample rate noise when the dbx was set to a word length of 24.

Thanks,
John

sorry if this one is too obvious, but do you have a full loop set up with your word clock (386 out to 828 in, 828 out to 386 in)?

for what it's worth, I used to have that exact setup, and it worked perfectly for me.
