Work and Shopping
Here I am at work and I'd so much rather be sitting back with a beverage of choice and playing guitar or shopping for more toys online. I can still shop for toys but sitting back with a bottle, mug, pint or even glass with an adult beverage isn't really an option and playing guitar would really be a no no. Since I can't really enjoy myself while I'm stuck here I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has purchased any goodies lately that might be worth the rest of us looking at. In an effort to keep this GT3 related, at least for the first reply or two, how well did your new toy work with GT3. Hardware or software doesn't matter.

CJ, I finally got my Har-Bal harmonic balancer mastering thingammy a couple of days ago. I can't give you any feedback as I haven't yet had the time for Doc to show me how to use it properly - looks like a great bit of kit though.

Strummy, Look me up on Friday and I'll be able to provide some help for you, mate. CJ I got a nice MCA SP-1 for recording instruments vocals. I intend to mod it to get a little more low end.

If you read, movies are always a let down. Are you talking about movies that are adapted from books or just movies in general?

DOC, Good luck with the MCA. I read up a little on those and the modification. The gearslutz site makes it out to be that you get a Mirotech M930 for the price of a used SM57. Personaly I'm too chicken to try and mod a mic, I don't like to solder small things. Jes, Most movies with few exceptions but adaptations in general. My worst let down was the Hitch Hicker's Guide though. Wow, that was a horrible experience! Steve, I'm curious about the Har-Bal. SOS gave it a rave review. Anyway we can get a before and after example? Has there been discussion on Vista around here? If so can anyone point me to the thread? I want to go 64 bit but I/m afraid it will screw with my old DirectX plugs and maybe even GT3. And for the jackboots amongst us, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO RELATE YOUR REPLY BACK TO GT3!

I want to go 64 bit but I/m afraid it will screw with my old DirectX plugs and maybe even GT3. And for the jackboots amongst us, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO RELATE YOUR REPLY BACK TO GT3! Regarding the move to 64 bit. You won't be able to run GTP3 nor will your plug-ins work properly if at all. That's really the long and short of it. Now if you want to move to Sonar that's a whole different story. The advantage here is that with the bit bridge technology in Sonar Home Studio 6 and Sonar SE & PE 6 or 7, you can run most of your plug-ins but not all. The other upside is that now after a year and half of Vista 64 and almost 4 years of XP 64 we are finally starting to see the implementation of more 64 bit plug-ins and drivers. Now if you want to move to Vista 32, you can get GTP3 and all your plug-ins to work without issue. You just need to run GTP3 in XP SP2 compatibility mode as an administrator and all should be well. You may need a few tweaks, but nothing really major. I found the movie adaptation of The Guide to be awful and a huge letdown. The same with Jumper (the movie is based upon the books by Steven Gould - Jumper, Reflex, and Junper: Griffin's Story) and the latest rendition of the Andromeda Strain. The adaptation of Eaters of the Dead (The 13th Warrior) was very good and bit more entertaining than the book (I like Crichton can't you tell?). As was Beowulf, which is an improvement over the Poem in Olde Ænglish any day of the week. So it can go either way.

ORIGINAL: Doc_Hollingsworth As was [The Movie] Beowulf, which is an improvement over the Poem in Olde Ænglish any day of the week. So it can go either way. You have me on that one. I haven't seen the newest rendition but any of the previous movies were definitely better than the book. However, the comment is not necessarily a remark on the sad state of popular movies, it is just my opinion that a readers imagination can still outdo a Hollywood production. As to the 64 bit thing, I mainly want to take advantage of running more than 4 gig of RAM. If funds allowed, I would do all the upgrades but the downside of that would be that I would probably go into brain lock trying to learn how to record again. The whole reason I'm still using GT3 is because it's so simple, I don't even use midi controlers. I know there is probably no chance that GT will ever see another version SO I guess my quandry regards staying simple or learning new tricks.

I must admit that jumping into Sonar PE was a bit much to chew on as I am still trying to learn the nuances and quick tricks to make the whole recording process a bit more easier with the tools provided. I hardly touch GTP3 anymore even though it is a bit more of a challenge. Ah well. So goes life. Without a challenge we would all be extinct.

Doc & Steve, So how did the Har-Bal thing come out? Like I said in another thread my wife is getting a bit P.O'd about me and my recording habit. Between the software I want to get and and the outboard stuff like studio furniture and little black boxes, I've developed a serious case of G.A.S. Did you know that almost all of the big online stores have a re-boxed/blemished section where you can buy stuff on the cheap? This could be the end of me!!!

Well mate, I feel for you. "Tis a real problem when the wife puts you out with the cat or dog for that matter. You might want to take me advice or you'll be in a right fix for sure. And yes the blemish section can be a good place to find deals. I've got a pretty good deal with a buddy of mine at Guitar Center where I come in and see what I might want that was returned or slightly damaged. I get the stuff at a really good price. Better than the scratch and dent sections of the online store for Guitar Center, Sam Ash or any other of the large retail chains we have here.

Doc, since I live in Southeast Asia, my shopping for recording, guitar, or pretty much anything other than toothpaste is an on line only event. There is a pretty good shop in Seoul, but that's a six hour drive and elevated pricing so... it's the big online store fo me.

Haven't sent it off yet. I'm in the midst of a business trip and will see about shipping it off when I get back. I've also got my own mods to work out on a damaged cry baby I got on eBay. The parts should be in by the time I get home.

I'll take Anjelina in heels but could you please leave out the plot, it just gets in the way. Oops, that would make it a Batman movie. Seriously though. I will admit that I like the LOTR trillogy, they got pretty close to how I had imagined the settings. There have been other "good" movies as well but I prefer books. I wish I could get my daughter to enjoy reading but she's getting on toward shopping mall age and unless it had pictures of handbags and some famous starlet, she looses interest quickly.

I still manage to read quite a bit. I found the Tolkien stuff has been a disappointment whether it was the latest version or the Ralph Bakshi stuff. Troy was pretty interesting but a lot of artistic license was taken with the Iliad as well. The man in the Iron Mask was a vast improvement over the book as well and was quite frankly more entertaining. Ah well..... I think we all have different tastes and expectations....
