I just noticed that you can assign the bus output to any available hardware out as well. Has anyone tried using this to rote use external effects? I don't think that GT3 has latency compensation so that could be a problem though.

Not if you use some of Steve's MUGS. Actually Lexicon offers several VST like outboard effects as does UAD. The latter using it's own DSP. The Lexicon stuff can be had for between $200 and $400 USD while the UAD stuff is certainly $1000+.

The standard fee is 1 keg of M&B mild per letter. A quick calculation shows you owe me 4 kegs. The current exchange rate is 3 kegs + 1 pint of Gunness = 4 kegs of M&B mild. Neat 'eh? Now we are all square. BTW - can you help me with my Har-Bal? PS - do you want a laugh? I recorded The Clash's 'White Riot' in about 2 hours last night - I even added Steve Strummer vocals in place of Joe's! Man, Pete would have a ball with that!! Switch on your IM if you wanna listen!

Strummy, I was merely letting CJ know that he would have to use your invention. which in essence he is liable for any royalties owed if he so desires to use your aforementioned invention. There fore I am not liable for any sums in Royalties owed to you. And you still owe me 3 kegs and 2 pints. Now regarding the har-bal, drop me a line with what seems to ail it and I will see what I can do to help you out. An ale for an ail.

Serious question: My understanding is that latency compensation would only be an issue with software effects. It's basically a "look ahead" function. If you are using external hardware effects, would this even be an issue?

Doc, I was refering to hardware outboard gear. I have a H&K Replex (tape delay immulator) that I would love to use but I'm too lazy to try and figure out how to wire it all in. I was thinking that I could assign a bus output to one of my Presonus mixer outs, run a cable to the H&K, back into the Presonus inst. in and then record all that to a seperate track which could then be nudged to line the audio back into sync. But that seems like a lot of work when I have all this free software sitting on my computer that can simulate the simulated tape delay. BTW I put a new tune up on Soundclick (shameless self promotion)

If you are using external hardware effects, would this even be an issue? Good question Bob. But I believe the UAD compensates for it. The Lexicon however requires you to route your signal externally as if in an effects send on hardware. I imagine there would be latency introduced from the simple fact the signal would be outbound from the audio interface and then inbound back into the DAW. It might be worth looking into. There was a write up in SOS not too long ago. I'll have a look and get you some feedback.

Troublesome concept. I think it requires too much thought. So I must defer to your signature regarding thinking. And Shameless self promotion? I don't see it as being shameless.

re:thinking is over rated. Nonetheless, I'm kind of thinking out loud here. A Pre-fade send should divert the signal before it is subject the the D/A converter, therby short-circuiting the latency from that. However the round trip would probably introduce some latency, I'm thinking in the 1ms or less range. Doc, let us know what you find out. CJ, I would be very tempted to hook it up. My guess is that a very tiny nudge might be all that is required, if that. My guess is that it would be so close that you would be dealing with phasing, and not a blatent latency problem. There is no shame at the end of the universe. Just a restaurant. Get a good seat.

ORIGINAL: RobertB There is no shame at the end of the universe. Just a restaurant. Get a good seat. This is sig material! I know that with the more costly DAWs they have some kind of latency compensation that is used when you route to an external device. I have read in a couple magazines that it can be a problem but I don't know the techincal issues. Anyway, I may just have to try messing with it this weekend. The Replex has a very good reverb as well so it may be worth the effort.

I would suggest learning a few more chords. There is a lot of "sameness" to the songs.

Well I was suprised to find out that my idea worked with no real problems. You can simply route the singal to an alternate out on your computer or interface, run the signal through whatever outborad gear you like, including a guitar or bass amp, and re-record to an empty track. Worked like a champ after I got all the levels right. My Presounus will let me patch out of any of the line outs and back in to any input without fuss and I imagine that you could figure out something on the TonePort if they have multiple outs on them. If you happen to have a good digital delay or something you can just patch it in and save some CPU headroom. Just remember that for mix down you have the second effected track to work with instead of an aux mix. I kind of like the ability to do this because I have that H&K box I mentioned before and the delay on it is great.

Hi there CJ. I've just tried out your idea using my POD2 as the external unit and it works perfectly - and sorry Pete, no inherent latency, you must be disappointed. First I imported a clean guitar loop into GT3. I ran a lead from the headphone out on My TonePort to the input on the POD; I then connected the POD's output to the input on the TonePort. I armed another track and started GT recording - this allowed me to use the POD to process the clean signal in real time while the processed signal was recorded back into GT. I fiddled around with a few different amps and effects with the POD just to emphasize the differences between the two signals. HERE'S THE RESULT - the left channel is the original clean loop and the right channel is the processed signal. CJ - this is a really great idea you had - I must experiment some more! Steve

CJ, I found a fix for the very problem you mentioned. I tell her every reasonable chance I get that I want this really expensive tool, or amp, or something I know sounds like something I'd use in the studio. I do this for a week or two and then at the end of the week or two I tell her: "You know honey. I'll shut up about that other thing that I wanted if I can get this thing. And it's this much less, to boot". It works every time, but you got to be sure the really expensive thing that you were mentioning was something you would never in your right mind (or wrong mind for that matter) put in your studio. I'm just glad that she doesn't know this forum exists or I'm in really big trouble!

She found me out on that one a long time ago. I used to beg for custom shop Gibsons and then switch to used stuff at the local store. I got a great Tele that way. But she caught on and now when I metion gear at all I get a shoulder cold enough to chill nitrogen. BTW I think I mentioned my new/old guitar amp from Clark. I got the head but the cab is still in the post somewhere. I'll get soem picts up for you when I get the whole thing in.
