Working with multi track drums and the velocity FX

When I added  SD3 I had it create a separate track for each item in the kit and then with the SD3 mixer completed the set up so each instrument goes to a separate track allowing me to EQ them differently and so on.

I make all my midi edits in one master midi track which up to now has been fine.
But I'm still ever tweaking my ride cymbal. Velocity scaling is not what I want and although I have thought I could write a CAL script to randomize velocity, I thought i should be able to use the built in midi FX for velocity.

I'm just not sure I can apply to one note in the master drum midi track

That these are real time effects not editing tools I guess means I don't have to worry about the occasional huge  "undo" factor that will crash Sonar  leaving the question of applying it to one note/instrument and then  how/if I can make such changes permanent in the midi data itself

I can cut out ride data from the midi master track  into its own track but wanted to see of there is another way to handle this

Using a separate track with midi FX velocity would be best to handle this as the FX is applied to all notes. Freezing the track will make it permanent.

    Erm, no it isn't.

You can apply the Velocity Fx to any/all of the notes that you have selected in the PRV.

    Just follow this procedure:

    1. In the prv, (hopefully you're using a drum map yes?), select all the notes for the kit piece in question (select ALL of them by clicking on the relevant key at the far left of the prv)
    2. Go back to Track View, and without touching anything else, right click on your drum midi track
    3. Select Apply Effect > Process Fx > Cakewalk fx > Midi Fx > Velocity. This should open up the tool where you can apply one of the many tools for changing velocity

I use this method all the time for introducing random hit velocities

    Bristol,

Thanks for the tip. The apply effect can be flexible in this kind of situation.
