I am dating myself, but I remember this like it was yesterday. I was a poor college student who had very little disposable income. But I had a few extra dollars and wanted to buy a new LP (yea, those plastic disc things). I was at the store and was deciding between Traffic's "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys", and this other band getting a lot of talk, 'The Stooges' (Iggy Pop fame). Well, the Traffic album was being played on the radio so I knew a lot of that album. The Stooges, I never heard, but all the talk interested me. So I went for the unknown, and bought The Stooges.

What a waste! I don't believe I ever finished the album. That was it. I guess all the hoopla was for their live performance, not their recorded performance. Oh well.

I still have my LP collection (with this album), and a turntable setup. I think I will dig it out and give it another try.

With that kind that committment you MUST report back if it STILL the worst album in your collection.

I just went searching for it and found the LP. This was their first, issued in 1969 on Elektra records. The album was titled "The Stooges" (original, huh?). I am transferring it to CD. I will give it a listen over the next couple days.

thing you made me thought of .. over here they sell albums in all sorts of places... e.g. petrol stations.. budget ones.. which normally are them live and / or when the group or singer is well past their prime after their rock n roll lifestyle.. sometimes age doesn't make their act turn into a fine vintage like wine..

Space,

I believe Metal Machine Music was Lou Reed's taking a piss at the record companies. Or, maybe he was getting prescription drugs really cheap. Anyhooo.

Worst IN MY COLLECTION?

Well, it was so bad, it is NO LONGER in my collection: "Surrealistic Pillow" by Jefferson Airplane. I was listening to it whilst driving "over the hill" from San Jose to Santa Cruz on highway 17. I got to Scott's Valley, about halfway in between, and the Cassette was unceremoneously ejected and it was LAUNCHED out of my driver's window.

Second worst is most recent: the new Portishead Album "3". Don't even bother. I resounding disappointment considering they are one of my favorite bands and one of the best live shows I saw - 10 YEARS AGO. It's like they didn't even try.

It never changes. One man's ceiling is another man's floor. I've got two engineers (more like my little brothers or worse...sons). They are ten years apart and both very music aware and opinionated. They agree on much but what they disagree on is like the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. I've got way too many
"worst" albums to enumerate. But I do have a special catagory. Failed attempts. Albums that, to me, and others, were miserable yet admirable failures. Recently Beck's "Sea Change" comes to mind. Albums that...well....just plain sucked, but were, by any lights, an attempt at something different, meaningful, etc.... I've another one I'll mention to date myself: Captain Beefheart's "The Spotlight Kid". I actually loved it. But it was a complete, wrongheaded, misguided notion on some A&R guy's (who knows? even Don's hisownself) part. Anyways love it or hate it...ya can't kill rock and roll baby!!

Eric Burdon sings the Animals.

Seriously, he made a cover album of all the Animals songs and it SUCKKKKKKED!!!

You think THAT sucked? Have a view of the concert DVD of Eric Burdon and the New Animals. Even though it's a video and not a CD, it's far and away the crappiest music I have on disk. And I was a huge Animals fan back in the day, which just adds further insult.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Trisha Yearwood... The ex left it. Although, I also have a Liberache(sp) from an earlier ex? Maybe it's a tie?

I do have a copy of the Beatles original album though :-) on vinal obviously, and in good condition.

OT: I regret pitching the original Yesterday and Today (Butchered Babies) cover when the album went south (warpped beyond anything the USS Enterprise could do).

BTW, <Beatles> fan from day one to the end (except the song Yellow Submarine. Bleh!)

Reporting back on my 'The Stooges' pick. Got it transferred to CD and the iPod. Gave it a listen. Well, it still sucks!

These guys were a 3-chord garage punk band. On the plus side, the album is minimalistic. About the only overdubs is on guitar (sometimes I like these basic recording techniques). Lyrics are especially juvenile. The opening track for instance:

1969
------
Well, allright...

Well its 1969, I'm okay,
Walk across the USA,
Its another year for me & you,
Another year with nothing to do.

Now last year I was 21,
Didn't have a lot of fun,
And now I'm going to be 22, (really? ... my comment)
I say 'ah my' and a 'boo hoo'.

Repeat Verse 1

(Chorus out ending)
Its 1969,
Its 1969,
Its 1969, baby,
Its 1969,
And on and on (fadeout).

Deep huh?

Funny thing is that at the time they came out, if I had the opportunity to see them live, I probably would have liked them. During my teen years, counter-culture bands like this were an experience. I still maintain that is the only reason they became somewhat famous (Iggy was rather wild from what the reports stated). And they probably had stacks of Marshall amps and played loud. All those crazy things we young guitars players loved at the time.

But I have to admit, after reading about the Lou Reed 'MMM' album, this one probably pales in comparison of what ranks as truly the worst album. Just reading about that one hurts. I don't think I wish to ever encounter a listening of that LP, except of course to see if what was said about it is true.

And, to tell you the truth, I love Zepplin - but I really don't think much of SONG REMAINS THE SAME.

I had actually witnessed them BOOED off the stage in 1973, at the Nassau Coliseum (Long Island, New York).
They just couldn't get all those cool effects live.

Black Sabbath opened for them.....and came back out to finish the night.

The Donnas

Purchased it to play when a certain band was tracking in my place about 5, maybe 6 years ago. Why? Because after about the 2nd or 3rd song it seemed like the CD was stuck on loop and playing the same song over and over again. Was trying to get across to the band that their stuff was getting like that, and then I used a Ramones Album to show them (they sounded a lot like the Ramones) that they can texture and bridge with little variations and it isn't so monolithic and stale after a few tracks.

Not knocking that band, I liked their stuff, but it was too monotinous.

I wish my lawn was emo..... then it would cut itself.

Anyone ever heard of Candlemass? I think that was their name. I remember back in the 80's a buddy of mine and I were stoned out of our minds and found ourselves in the record store scanning the latest heavy metal "tapes", trying to find something cool. Candle Mass had the coolest cover we had seen, or maybe we were just too toasty to notice otherwise.

This turned out to be, what I call, slow motion metal. I've never heard any band play any slower in my life. Each song was this lethargic crawl of a beat with guitar licks that sounded tired and sleepy and the same in every song. They were terrible. I've always wondered if anyone else ever heard them, or maybe even liked them.

Edit: Never mind, I just looked them up and I guess they did pretty well for themselves. Apparently it's called doom metal.

Yes and I did the same thing! I used to buy tapes based on the cover art. I tried to get into Candlemass but never could. The singer looks like a heavy metal monk. They did (and I think still might) have a decent underground following...

These types of purchases made up most of by worst albums in my collection - most hit the trash can and are long forgotten...

Paula's first major album, This Fire, was fantastic. I had high hopes for this follow-up. Fortunately, self-preservation kicked in after four or five songs, and the Stop button came into play. Now, I'll just about always give an album a few listens before I decide I really don't like it, but in this case I made a special exception. I still keep it in the 300-disc CD changer, but it has never again seen the radiant light of the player's optical pickup.

You know what really pisses me off? When you buy an album on the strength of one cut you've heard and it turns out to be the only good song on the record.

It's like going to a movie on the strength of the trailer only to discover that the trailer included every good scene in the flick.

One example that comes to mind is Dream Police (I think that's the name), which had a great tune called "Life in a Northern Town". I think it may have been a hit, but I wasn't following popular music much at that time. I saw them on Saturday Night Live and loved the song, bought the album and it sucked something awful.

The trailer method of filmmaking is becoming the norm in many circles. I own a number of albums that follow that template, and there's a sore spot on my psyche for every one of them.

Dream Academy, I think.

Off the top of my head (more to come!) - The Clash - Cut The Crap

sadly this too was once a part of my record collection. I thought it was alright cos I was young and didn't know better...shortly after getting this I found Sandanista in a second hand shop. Can you imagine my dismay, a young punk kid having to listen to 6 sides of reggae?!?! I thought surely this isn't the whole album??? These days I'd put Sandanista on anyday over Cut the Crap! Anyways...a couple of months later I found Give 'em enough Rope in my local rec store...AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The worst?
Easy - Showaddywaddy's Greatest Hits.

My dad bought it for me in the 70s, when I was 3 or 4. I chose it, probably because of the awful cover. Terrible rock 'n' roll songs...
But I still have the album! haha

Oi !!! Nought wrong with a bit of showaddywaddy...lol

They featured on a UK children's TV show 2 years ago called 'The Slammer' which is set in a mock up jail block where guests have to perform and the audience vote on who gets out of jail. Oh yes..the Showaddys are still going strong.

On an even sillier note, a friend of mine (originally from Ireland) who grew up in the same neighbourhood as me in the 70s used to get his hair cut like members of Showaddywaddy. This earned him the nickname Showaddypaddy. Kids can be so cruel.
