Re: Worst hit songs 2015/12/22 14:17:47 (permalink)
OK, let's see.

"God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols, released just in time for the Royal Jubilee in 1977.

Not because it was a bad song or badly performed, it wasn't. But because the BBC and commercial stations instantly banned it and the ever outraged tabloid end of the UK's press, who already had a huge down on the "scandalous" and "anti-social" punk fashion and culture anyway, visciously (sorry) pitched into the band and Rotten in particular. Some record shops, including Woolworth's chain stores which were a big part of the singles market, refused to stock it.

That the song didn't "insult her Majesty" in the slightest was neither here nor there.

And it sold like mad.

Which, for the first time, left the BBC in the awkward position of not being able to play the number one single in the UK.

As for really bad hit songs, the list is almost endless.

Though it's hard to think of anything worse than the output of St Winifred's School Choir.

Search youtube for them if you must, just don't say I didn't warn you.

Anything by Captain and Tennille was pretty bad. Well played, sung and produced - but bad.

Fortunately on the UK side of the Atlantic we didn't suffer from them as much as the US.

I mostly agree with Sharke on this one...with notable exceptions.

And

@Beagle...Old Man Down The Road is just Keep On Chooglin or Run Through The Jungle with different lyrics. John was mighty good...but very repetitive.

Yeah that was pure mush. Horrible song considering he had some great tunes around that time (Running With The Night, Is It Me You're Looking For).

I don't mind, that should be fun. I also said iirc that the thread can and should be improved. What would be impossible I think would be a so good it is bad sub thread.

Failed embedding. But it was supposed to be Yngwie Malmsteen shredding the guitar nearly into fire. Neo-classical style ofc. I used to idolize him but nowadays I idolize those who are great composers.

yes!  all of his songs sounded the same!  excellent musician, but I didn't care for hardly any of his songs.  CCR was pretty much the same stuff as JF, too.

My next candidates:
Eddie Murphy - "Party All the Time"
Right Said Fred - "I'm Too Sexy"
Billy Ray Cyrus - "Achy Breaky Heart"
Los Del Rio - Macarena
Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby
and one of my most hated of all time:

Let's see ... I'll try to be polite ... for one, I have no tickets to the nude show, which will be fake, of course! For two, the size of the stage for this other would be so big that I won't fit in the audience, and her voice is like an old steam engine ... all power and no go. Just a female Pavarotti. No thanks, I don't think I want my ears drilled again by the Rolling Stones! And the other ... so plasticine and fake, that the oil all comes out in drippings ... talk about a Barbie doll!

Re: Worst hit songs 2015/12/27 21:40:15 (permalink)
This is the most unfortunate thread in history. These songs may on occasion breach our peace by inflicting themselves on us in small doses. One at a time with a period of time lengthy enough to allow us to recover. An amount we can survive, mostly. However to have them all brought to our attention all at the same time forcing themselves into our memory is at best abusive and at worst dangerous. For our blood pressure may hit stratospheric levels never before attained by man or beast. That is not the worst of it. For we now may suffer the recurring trauma of playing them back repeatedly ad infinitum within our heads.

There should have been a strong warning in the title to the effect of "read at your own risk"!

P.S. now I am trying to think of the very worst songs ever. This is the power of suggestion that this thread has unleashed on the unsuspecting world and the poor innocent reader.

Best
