Worst recording you own?
I am one of the few people that owns King Crimson Earthbound. It is a great performance as far as i can tell, but it was recorded on a 2 track cassette in a live performance somewhere. It was recorded very very hot. The sound quality is somewhere between that of a speaker at a drive through Dairy Princess (Dairy Queen knockoff) built in the 50s in a small town and the speaker from a drive in movie theater where you accidentally ripped part of the wiring loose when you rolled up the windows because it was starting to rain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUuWUkJBF8E You be the judge!
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

BMI My copy of Earthbound is MINT MINT MINT. I cannot make it through the record. Now an alternative answer might have rightly been Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed. I cannot tell if the recording was bad or great. I cannot listen to it. Rumor has it that the 4th side has no lead out groove so that the cacophony just continues forever. Its amazing what drugs can do for the creative process. This is evidence.

mmmmm...wondering whether the 2 track was tracking straight even then. Sounding like there was something in the background as well. I think the poorest recording I have is of the Space Ritual Tour by Hawkwind, the version was called Bring Me The Head of Yuri Gagarin...peaky peaky peaky

Hah and I love Hawkwind. I would venture to say I have one of the larger Hawkwind collections in Texas - maybe 15++ albums. Maybe more.

The worst recorded version of anything I own is an early (circa 1972) version of my all original band doing my song "Robots From Hell". It is hair-raisingly hideous and laughable. Truly cringe-worthy.

I have a bootleg Neil Young concert LP called "Young Man's Fancy". The crowd noise is louder than the music on most of it. Looking at it now. It says 'recorded live in LA Feb 1, 1971'. The label is Zerocks Spacematic and at the bottom says 'quality guaranteed'. Produced by Art, live from Stanley Steamer, Big Red and Chandler Pavillion. Neil must have been moving at the speed of light that night, playing in 3 different places. Owned by someone named Quinn before I bought it.

Metallica's St.Anger has to be mentioned. And while we're at it, their latest effort w/ Lou Reed seems pretty awful judging from the first 30 seconds snippets that came out.

I've got a compilation CD somewhere and one of the tracks is the Mamas & Papas 'California Dreamin'' - this track is practically un-listenable on any level. It's distorted, clipped and bloody awful!

space_cowboy Hah and I love Hawkwind. I would venture to say I have one of the larger Hawkwind collections in Texas - maybe 15++ albums. Maybe more. Hahahaha ... . - 1st - In Search of Space - Doremifasollatido - Space Ritual (love it! ... and loud! ... sorry Bapu and Strummy!) - In the Hall of the Mountain Grill (awesome side 1 with Simon House!) - Warrior on the edge of Time - Astounding Sounds Amazing Music (magnificent Steppenwolf and Reefer Madness) - Quarks Strangeness and Charm (how about an anthem about oil as hashish?) - PXR5 - Levitation (too bad Ginger Baker thinks this isn't good ... his drumming makes Hawkwind even better not to mention Tim Blake!) - The Chronicle of the Black Sword - Space Bandits (excellent first 5 songs leading to an obvious powow named "electric tepee") - Electric Tepee (dig that ending ... even Bapu wouldn't like it!) - It Is The Business of the Future to Be Dangerous (awesome ... with erections too!) - Alien 4 - Live Chronicles - The Black Sword DVD - Both Calvert solo albums (and Vivian Stanshall is a treat on the first one!) A whole bunch of Nik Turner starting with Xitintoday (Steve Hillage all over it and fabulous album) , Sphynx and Prophets of Time, and then Anubian Lights' Eternal Sky (awesome tripping album, not for everyone in this board at all!) I have 2 more but I don't know their titles ... I think one is Church of Hawkwind ... now you know why I thought "Raving and Drooling" was so far out ... it was like telling Hawlwind that I could do that even better and be trippy too!

Hi, I suppose that the "worst" recordings would always be any of the bootlegs I used to have and heard ... the quality was bad, but the energy was off the wall and metering ... and way better. In the first 3 years of Led Zeppelin fame, their bootlegs were way better than the albums and you know the albums were good. The energy and the concert flow and work was too good and not to be missed ... Jimmy was always best live, with mistakes included than he was on record in the studio ... that simple! PF boots were mostly good, because all the material up to the day that DSOTM was released was slightly different or they allowed for some fingering around and having fun. When their shows became mechanical and computerized, they lost the ability to free lance and do more on stage, and while they became a perfect example of the ultimate commercial selldown, in the end, they were not as fun and neat as they were in the earlier days ... you can hear 10 to 12 different versions of "Setting the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and never get bored, or hear "Green is the Colour" some 10 different times ... and of course, hearing that massive greatest gig in the sky with Syd sermonizing all over it with hundreds of other voices and priests was actually a lot more fun than what was eventually recorded, but it's hard to say that it was not good ... it was also magnificent. I have too much stuff that is too good on energy and sux in the studio ... and just as much stuff that is excellent in the studio and total **** on the stage to be able to make a call on this thread.
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

It's just unbearably bad. It probably wasn't a bad-sounding recording until the mix and mastering engineers got their hands on it.
