I would get Producer if you can swing it...it's a lot more bang for your buck...

If not, then get studio...and then upgrade to X3 Producer when it comes out...

8.3 still working great for me, xp, 32bit and I can get additional functionality from vsts. I know people who did the X1, X2 path and they say they have a love/hate relationship with it.

Sittin downtown in a railway station one toke over the line.

Does Studio have the core functionality inherent in X2? Whats missing in Studio vs. Producer? I did not see a comparison chart. IOW- does Producer have extra instruments and such but preserves the things that are talked about in this page: http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/default.aspx

Get what you can afford you can always upgrade to next level up later on.

I bought X1 Producer when I had the cash and there was a sale, it's everything in the box.  I bought the X2 upgrade cheap during a sale - but I don't have it installed or use X2.  When/if X3 comes out, I would probably be fine with X3 Studio as I don't tend to use any Cakewalk synths anymore and most of my effects are 3rd party.

To each their own.  Only you can decide what you need/can live with/without and how much money you have.

Anubis - I recommend that you don't even bother studying up on the differences. X2 Producer is great and you won't be limited in any way. You won't regret getting it. You'll appreciate it.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

I think I'm gonna get Studio. The difference I think, is in the virtual instruments that Producer has over Studio. I like the smart tool and all the core enhancements. I have plenty of instruments and FX.

Have you tried the trial? http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Web-Trial.aspx

I'm not sure, but I don't think Studio comes with the pro channel. For me being able to add an additional FX chain and whatever plug I want, has given me the freedom to be able to freeze a synth once I'm done and I can still work with it in the channel later on without having to reload that synth. That is my favorite addition.
May not be something you are interested in if you rely mostly on 3rd party plugs but IMO the pro channel has some serious mixing tools, if it doesn't satisfy you for something with the FX chain insert you can build your own. I personally like that flexibility.

I would certainly DL the trial first. Some hate it and prefer Sonar 8

Transition from 8.3 to X2 will takes time, so much of the interface has changed that initally you will be totally lost so first impressions can be misleading. IMHO you should also get the SWA complete Sonar X2 video http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cgbp/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=30-SASX2.00-20E as this will really help.

The upgrade from 8.3 is well worth it. For me 8.3 to 8.5 was a major improvment and the X series built on that. I never warmed to X1 but added features in X2 really helped, like my favorite new feature, auto track zoom.

Pro Channel is good, and you will only get that if you get producer. If you never had it and have some decent effects you probably wont miss it but once you have it you will never want to loose it.

I really like the X series of Sonar and the transition was childs play for me. Probably the most important reason to get Producer version, if the instruments aren't important to you, is the Pro Channel. I really, really like the Pro Channel so that was an easy one for me. But core functionality is the same across all the versions as far as I know.

The pro channel is the deal breaker for me. I would find it very hard to go back to pre-ProChannel times.

Studio is fine if you don't want the PC - but I wouldn't want to be without it.

I found the change to X1 a sharp learning curve, but picked it up very quickly and loved it. X2 just improved on it with some great new features. Auto track zoom, take/automation lanes, console emulation and timeline zoom spring to mind.

Get Producer! Hands down, more bang for the buck. And it never hurts to have a viable alternative instrument or effect in the arsenal. While the instruments and fx in Producer may not be equal to one that costs several hundred dollars, they still can become a solid contender for a particular problem solving situation.

Sonar Platinum, Sonar X3e, Sonar X2a , Sonar X1 Expanded and 8.5.3 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 10 on a Toshiba P75-A7200 Laptop with i7 @ 2.4 quad and 8 gigs of RAM and secondary WD 1 Tb drive, Windows 10 desktop, Asus i5 @ 3.2 quad, 12 gigs RAM, 1 Tb drive, 1 500 gig drive, MOTU 24io, 2 Roland Studio Captures, Saffire 6 USB for laptop, Soundtracs Topaz Project 8 mixer, Alesis Monitor 2s, Event BAS 20/20s, Roland Micro-Monitor BA-8s, and 45 years worth of collecting FX, Mics, Amps, Guitars, and Keyboards!
