Would haveing a pitched roof in my control room be a bad idea ?
Hi all I am moveing in to a new studio and have a lot to do in it I have a thread over in the coffee house about it here http://forum.cakewalk.com...06&mpage=1#2280883 I was hopeing some one could jump in there and tell me would I come in to any major issues in sound if I have a sloped roof from the top of the control room window to the top of the fuse box thats in the pics on there ? I would like to have it sloped if its not going to cause sound problems but if not I wil make it flat. Thanks for any advice Norrie

Well, a sloped roof sure beats having it collapse due to the weight of snow! Plan on putting some insulation up at the peak. The regular old pink fluffy kind. It'll make a nice bass trap.

Its not actualy the outside roof the building its self is actualy an Apex. Inside is a suspended flat ceiling I am puting in a false roof below that because suspended ceilings look crap its the new roof I am building I am on about haveing as a slope or keeping flat.

Norrie, roof or ceiling? It is a little unclear. But a sloped ceiling looks good and gives a better sense of spaciousness. Along with the insulation you can make panels, too, for bass trapping. Hang them so that they catch sound coming up and anything reflecting back down. A two fer one, just like corner bass traps. @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Norrie, yes, from the front of your CR, slope the ceiling up towards the centre of the room. This will help to dampen stray reflections from your monitors. The ceiling is another mirror point, just like the side walls, so anything you can do to prevent reflections from coming back and reaching your ears is a good thing.

I'm not an expert on sound reflection and room sizing and shape, but it seems to me that non-parallel surfaces would be better than having parallel surfaces that allow precise standing waves to be set up. Isn't that the reason we use the bass traps and other sound shaping items like curtains and carpet? I think a sloped ceiling not only looks better, but also breaks up those parallel surfaces that are the bane of sound techs.

Turns out the non-parallel surfaces thing is mostly myth. What it can do is reduce flutter echo, but that is easily treated without resorting to the funhouse architecture often employed in studios. And what it doesn't do - contrary to the myth - is address the most common and much more difficult issue of room resonances. All it does is make them more difficult to calculate. The point I was making is that corners are the best places to absorb low-frequency energy, and the apex of a pitched ceiling is an excellent place to do that because you can stuff 2 feet of insulation up there without it getting in the way.

bitflipper got it just right, particularly about the absorbing material in the ceiling. Why can't I mark that post as helpful?
