Would like some "quick and dirty" advice on recording a live band with what I have....

This guy and his rock band are playing this weekend at a local restaurant  / bar where they are regulars. He asked me if I would give it a go   to  try and record them live with my interface, DAW on a laptop with the goal of creating a demo CD.  Up to this point my set up is in a home - studio and minimal equipment.  This will be my first attempt at this other than the "old days with a mixer board and reel to reel !  They will be usiing a large Peavey mixer board for the venue and plenty of mics of course on vocal, drums, keyboards and amps.  I plan on taking a TASCAM US-144 USB 2 channel interface, cables, my laptop with a Sonar program, a set pf phones and go for it!. I assume come out of their 1/4 " left and right from the mixer to the interface..computer... What other advise is there out there on live recording like this!!!!! on such short notice and with a simple set up as this???

If it's just a bar gig..and they have nothing big time riding on it, then ask if you can run the house sound and mix for the recording - making the house mix second priority.

No, you probably need a separate mix(er) or you are stuck w/ the house mix.

Your best bet is to stereo mic the band from the best sounding seat in the house.  It can turn out allright.  I've done it for live music videos.  If you pick your spot right (make sure the house is filling up and not to far back unless you want it to sound like a cave) you can get a good demo live recording.

I've been in bands that have recorded demos like that .  You may want to pan the vocals and insturments L-R 100%, and mixdown to mono.  The vocals always end up 3 times louder than the insturments.  Like AT said , you could use a seperate mixer but you would need to have several outputs running out of the house mixer, or double mike everything.  The best way to record a full band live would be to use an interface with multiple inputs.

    +1

I was fortunate enough to access the direct outs on the house pa board straight into my old 16 track Fostex.

the only probem was, they were set to POST fader - every move the ME made was picked up on my system <doh>

The main problem I forsee is the same issue we have had trying to do "quick and dirty" live recordings of my band at church. When you're in a small venue and/or aren't playing very loud, a lot of times the drums are going to end up too low in the mix. The drums don't need to be amplified much in that situation because they usually can be heard just fine. But then when you do a 2-channel recording out of the mixing board, you're only getting the portion of the drums that was going through the P.A.

The solution to this would be what Rbh stated above - get the right mix for the recording, not what sounds best in the venue. Which is probably going to mean the drums are really loud.

I appreciate all the advice ---- okay if I do choose to run the L+R lines the mixing board (or two seperate mics for that matter) into the R+L of my interface, what would be the best way to set up the INs on my DAW - just stereo into one track, or do a left-in and right-in one each, on two different tracks ?

I don't think there's a real advantage either way - I would personally do it as a stereo track.

Take the feed off the board unless you want a lot of room noise in the recording.

    Gear: A bunch of stuff.
