Would love feedback on a new song. [UPDATED CUZ I'M DUMB]
I'm pretty much finished with changing this mix. I've kinda been using it as a tool to try to learn Sonar. I'd love some feedback on the mix if anyone would be down to give it. This is basically my second 'finished' song using Sonar. Thanks! https://soundcloud.com/scott-mcgregor-3/scott-mcgregor-acod UPDATE:So I screwed up and posted a version that still had the Sonarworks plugin engaged... I think that accounted for a lot of the bass buildup that people are mentioning. Feeling pretty dumb but would love if some of you would take another listen... https://soundcloud.com/scott-mcgregor-3/scott-mcgregor-acod <-- new link

The lead kinda gets lost under the 32nd (?) notes..too much frequency masking. Might have to change the sound of it or record in a different octave. Rhythm guitar is a tad heavy in the beginning. Overall the drums sound isolated from the rest of the mix. Maybe throw a reverb over the whole mix to glue it together.

Nice playing! Nice song! Think of your leads as you would a vocal. Bring it to the front. EQing the instruments into their frequency range will help clarity. Great advice from James. Using Sonar as a tool to learn is a good idea and can bring other benefits in arranging and song writing. Plus it's plain ole' fun! Quad Curve EQ

Solid tune! I thought the overall arrangement and performances would good. Mix-wise I also hear some of the frequency clashes mentioned above, which could probably be mostly alleviated with selective EQ.

i hear some buildup between the kick and the bass..... there is a mud buildup, that you need to carve out between those two. arrangement wise, its a bit rambling, and there is no compelling melody.... if you were to put a simple vocal part across the top of this, it would tie it together. sounds good as a starting demo, but feels incomplete.

It sounds like you are learning good. I kind of liked the sound you have. Mixing is art. Yes, there are some tweaks here and there. The one thing that stood out that needs attention is the bottom end. There seems to be a lot of (kick) sub that needs to be cleaned out. I think it is stealing headroom from the areas that the other comments are talking about. I ran your tune through SPAN (great freebie) and you will see what I mean. Nice tune! You got one part where it had a nice YES vibe.

Great playing! I'd put the eq on every track. On the bass and kick, you could cut off everything below 50 hz. On every other track, cut off everything below 400 hz. See what you think, adjust to taste! I'd also eq the snare up, above maybe 1000 hz. There is a gem in here waiting to be polished. cheers, -Tom

The Main thing is your playing and song is Good .. People gave you some very solid advice on how too bring this song much closer to where it can be ... Once you dial the song using EQ's and carving , I think Bat was right about a simple vocal part .. As a non singer over here , I would venture too say as a guitarist, a main melodic hook on the guitar could work .. all the best, Kenny

Thanks again guys. Solid advice. For the record... I did eq the tracks and did use a bunch of HP filters. I'm stuck mixing on headphones for the most part. I use sonarworks which really help but I find the low end is still pretty tough.
Maybe I'll return to this track sometime when I'm not sick of listening to it 😃

I like your guitar playing , your song starts off great but like everyone I agree with the mix . Also work on your song structure and a good melody , too much repeating stuff going on throughout the whole song . Break things up a bit and keep your listeners tuned in , listeners lose interest if the whole song sounds like a merry-go-round . You have something worth working on , thanks for sharing .

Playing sounds fine here but as has been noted by several other above the mix needs some serious attention in the bottom end and general tweaking to bring it together good advice above regarding some surgical EQ'ing.. Thanks for sharing.

This sounds like a much improved mix, I am not hearing the Bass problem I was. Nice job.

Excellent groove. My novice ears say that you need to work on the clarity of the mix. If there is any heavy reverb in there get it out and really work towards placing each instrument in its appropriate frequency range. (Easier said than done)
