Sweetwater has a demo extender. $599

Stop it!   I'm trying to resist temptation.  (I have room for one more extender on my desk.)

(FWIW, I got my MCU Pro and the extender for $750.  I love buying good used gear.)

cool. I hate buying used gear:) especially something that I don't have a clue about. I saw an old MCU on Craigslist for like $250 a couple months ago but passed. Some guy has the same unit for sale for $500.:)

Anyway, yea, I'd sure like me some faders...

I am thinking about moving my extender to the right side of my MCU.  That would put the controls(buttons) in front of me with the fader banks right and left of them.

Anyone else doing this?

I know it's a bit of the old "If you love Reaper so much, why don't you marry it?"  But check out the implementation one of the Reaper users has developed for the Mackie MCU.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2029458/Reaper/mcu_klinke_manual.pdf

It adds so much more power to the control surface.

EDIT:   Unfortunately, the fellow doesn't own an extender so this additional level of support doesn't support the extender.  He has a previous release that does but it isn't nearly as feature rich.  Bummer.

Strangely enough after years of running the XT to the left I've just moved mine to the right. I've always had the controls in front of me but I've just moved my console as plugging my snake in when I have bands in was starting to get a pain so I shifted that, which meant I had to shift the MCU which moved the controls so I've swapped them round.

Now wondering why I didn't do it before as it's also bought my control surface element of the console closer as well.

Yeah, I had to move my mixer all together because there wasn't room.  I had a friend who gave me a side car mixer stand years ago and I finally utilized it to set my mixer to my right.  I kind of like it.

Question:  My record enable button on the left most track of both the MCU and the extender has stopped working in SONAR.  It's not the switch because they are functional in Reaper.  Is there something in SONAR I might have done to turn this off?

It's not a hidden track problem as I first suspected.

Sorry about highjacking this thread, but I have a puzzling question.. After doing a clean install of X1D on my computer, when I press record on my MCU Pro to arm an instrument track, I get no feedback, the track is armed in X1, but the record button doesn't light up on the MCU, and if I try to disarm it, it just won't respond. The problem isn't the MCU, I tried it with a different DAW and it worked fine..What am I missing...? Only have this problem with instrument tracks, and it worked before I did a clean install...

I am having a similar behavior in an audio track as per my previous post.  Maybe they are related?

I have my MCU in the center with an Xtender on either side. That leaves my right hand right at the transport/jog wheel/keyboard and left hand free for my Kensington Pro trackball. I can rock in this config.

I am in good company then and shouldn't fear posting pics that may get me banished to the basement forums for life.

What are the pluses of the Mackie over the  Behringer BCF2000 ?

Re:Would you buy a used Mackie MCU Pro? 2012/07/12 07:52:34 (permalink)
MCU has scribble strips on the unit plus time code section. BCF has a virtual scribble strip, no time code.

MCU has indivdual buttons for Mute, Solo, Record, Select the MCU needs a modifier for solo IIRC?

Other functions on the BCF require a modifier and there is only one as opposed to 3 on the MCU and therefore access to fewer (if somewhat obscure) functions

MCU has a jog wheel BCF doesn't.

BCF can be used as a controller for ACT etc, MCU can't

MCU has a bigger footprint, you can see the difference in my photos above. (I now use the BCF as an ACT controller.

As an ex-BCF now MCU user I feel I can answer these questions subjectively......

Is the MCU better? Yes.
Is it £1000 better? Not even close.

The BCF is IMHO one of the best value bits of kit available. If the MCU is at a bargain price it's a far harder choice. At list the BCF is a winning no-brainer. IMHO of course.
