Would you consider this to be a good or a bad mix?

Richard Ashcroft, A Song For The Lovers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A78xUY7u6I

I always liked this song, and I guess to me it sounds great, but that's because I really like the tune.

But as for the mix, well to my ears it sounds very crowded, muddy at times, and often hard to pick out the individual parts, even on a good set of cans. That said, I still really enjoy it.  I guess what I was wondering is, if this were posted in the songs forum, would the general consensus be that there was too much going on and that frequencies were clashing and that maybe it would be better to tone the arrangement down a bit?

Or do they get away with it on the basis that it's a "wall of sound" style arrangement in which it doesn't really matter if individual parts get lost in the mix?

I know - it's all down to taste and if I enjoy it, I enjoy it. The song certainly has enough acclaim. But I'm just interested to know how audio production junkies such as ourselves perceive such a mix.

Never a big fan of Ashcroft or The Verve, but that song always sounded good on the radio.

This was what I was wondering, is a song like this mixed to sound good on the radio, but not an audiophile system. I used to know a guy who worked in an audiophile store in the North East of England, and he told me that he'd sometimes get young guys coming in who wanted to splurge their tax refund on a decent setup, and they'd bring an album by Oasis or Blur in as a tester. He told me that they'd always go away disappointed that their favorite jangly Britpop music, which sounds great on the radio and on small bedroom systems,  sounded like crap on high end speakers.

Welp...I just listened to it on my iPad lying in my lap partially masking the speaker.  A good mix would still sound ok under those conditions and a great mix would still translate and sound...well...great.

    This didn't.  At all.

Liked the feel and the song tho.

As to my internet name I got given the nickname Wookiee when Star Wars first hit the big screen it kind stuck most people that know me call me Wookiee.

As to who cares, shame a few more do not care.
