Yeah, these days people are pretty much listening to music in cars, on crowded streets, and while operating jackhammers. Casual music listeners just don't have room in their lives for dynamic range anymore.

Yeah but it doesn't have to be compressed THAT much. You can have it significantly less compressed and still sound clear in those environments.

Everyone seems to be going this way these days, Ben Folds' new album is compressed about as much as death magnetic, though it has been done better. It is clearer and sharper, but still way too compressed. The metallica masterer could have done a better job with just as much terrible compression. New Bloc Party album is probably even worse than all of these. It just sounds terrible. Just sounds like flat white noise with crackling constantly coming from your speakers due to the clipping from the hard limiting done. I HATE IT!! FOR FFFF SAKE! STOP COMPRESSING YOUR FREAKING MUSIC SO MUCH!!!!!!

Actually, the Crest values (Peak-RMS) appear a bit higher on Death Magnetic ... if the RMS is light blue. But it still stinks of loudness-wars for teenage attention deficit syndromes.

The problem with loudness race and *commercials* (for me) remains. Those genres rant their music for money, lust, and/or power. I suppose they want to show-off in a big house or something.

No television in my house! No loudspeakers in my church! No politician gets my vote this year. Etc.

Methinks, the loudness-race is the rat-race. I hope I don't get sucked into it.

They probably just asked the band which graph they like the shape of, and just compressed until it looks like the one they picked!

Same with the colour of the graph - I quite like it in blue, better than red.

There is a movement among professional mixing and mastering engineers to try and combat this. Go to TurnMeUp.org and see what's happening.

And if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to watch the video linked to on that page. It's probably the best ammunition you can have when trying to convince someone that less compression improves music, regardless of genre.

any chance you can compare, say, Testament's 'The New Order' with 'The Formation of Damnation', Iron Maiden's 'Somewhere in Time' with 'A Matter of Life and Death' and Dream Theater's 'When Dream and Day Unite' with 'Systematic Chaos@, just to give us another benchmark...yeah we know DM is compressed to ****, but the relative values of albums from 20 years ago might be interesting...

Thanks, what a great site. That video will be a great tool to help explain to friends what I'm talking about, and that I'm not so crazy. When I talk of dynamics and clarity, alot of them just don't understand without an example like that video, then there are those who just want it loud, but haven't a clue what they're really missing out on. This is one war I stand behind 100%.
