Wow, my new laptop has the worst sound... ever!
Seriously this new Toshiba S-70-A has got to be the worst sounding thing that makes sound that I have ever heard make sound. My two previous Toshibas surprised me with their ok sound. This new one has surprised me in a whole new way. I just disabled the make it better sounding bloat-app and it didn't get much better. I'm ready to trade it in for a clock radio. :-)

How can any laptop sound good without using decent (versus indecent) external speakers?

Yes, there is no comparison to real monitors, but what I hope for is to be able to turn the controls up to full and not hear it split the speakers into shredded lettuce. My previous laptops were engineered to work without damaging them selves... this one is not. It sounds like there is still some sort of "enhancement" going on that takes a normal sound file and makes it louder. I got rid of the DTS bass boost and space-alizer app but it still sounds like it's got some sort of maximizer running. :-S

Gee Mike, maybe you shouldn't buy a lappy made from vegetables? Or, maybe more hardened variety like squash? But then the sound might sound too squashed! Maybe turnips so you could turn it up louder?

My HP sounds like a 1960 trasistor radio through it's speakers. Relatively good.... hwever sompared to something that really is good... meh. It sounds OK through phones though. I think it is some reltek stuff. Of course it sounds much better through the OC and monitors or phones. It sounds OK just through some old Roland powered monitors I use on the porch to stream Spotify on... of course it could be the beer. (or the becan). I have been pleased with this HP laptop and surprised at hpw well it runs and sounds. It has been much better than any DELL I have ever had. DELL seemed to really go downhill a few years ago. They made some laptops with the video card and other stuff integrated into the motherboard and I have two around here that became boat anchors because the video card went Tango Uniform. J

:-) Collards have come in and they have seemed indescribably delicious... especially when you add a dab of white balsamic vinegar just before stabbing them with a fork. :-)

That would make the collards holler which in turn might make the beans sprout and then the bell peppers would start ringing not to mention tomatoes peeling out as well as the spinach giving everything else their own spin.

Apparently there are rumors that I used to sing the Double Mint song in my crib (and I don't mean "crib" in the low-IQ Hip Hop manner either).

I just compared the two laptops side by side. It's hard to describe how much worse the new shiny one sounds compared to the old food and slobber incrusted one. I think they should have just saved the $0.27 and left the speakers out of the new one and called it a day. It's a downer to think that instead of getting better every month that this stuff now seems to get cheesier each year.

Just get some decent headphones Mike. I never listen to my laptop via speakers, it makes rocking guitar tracks sound like they were recorded in a ummm tin ??? :-)

I've got a monitor system that costs more than I care to admit, yet the old lap top sounded decent enough to enjoy surfing music sites etc. I only use headphones when someone is paying me too. :-) I dislike wearing head phones while trying to enjoy music.

Two thoughts Mike- You buy a computer for less than 400 skins and if the sound is the only issue you should feel very lucky. You don't have the right headphones.

What's a skin these days? It's a $1300 laptop... and the previous laptop sounds great in comparison. The thing I don't like about headphones is that they are headphones. Been there, done that. I'd rather listen to laptop speakers... maybe even a clock radio. :-)

I think it must depend on what you're listening to, it can't be modern enough... try some YouTube 'd stuff, on both lappy, record them both into a proper computer but with a usb mic, apply mild bitcrushing, import, cross phases - do they cancel out any joy of life?

I found two other layers of DSP enhancement that I disabled for startup. It's sounding better now but it seems like it simply has a bigger amp Ichip on board than the speakers have any hope of handling.

I guess a skin is $100. I guess I got the same speakers as the $400 version even though every other spec on mine is different. The base price on mine was $900 plus the upgrade stuff I checked off. That actually describes the primary aspect of my disappointment, they didn't really seem to make a like to like replacement to my previous unit... they just jazzed up a low grade generic unit to make it seem comparable. The other thing is that if you click on the Buy Now for $389... you go to page full of Lenevo. :-O My previous unit had a 18.5" screen and *massive* 1-1/2" diameter speakers. :-) I sure miss the old one... already. :-) The funny thing is... I didn't know I got a card reader til I read that review. :-) Thanks. best regards, mike

That thing would be awesome with my new Volca synths. I've been stuck playing them through one of my home made tube amps.
